Need a Quick Photo Fix? Photoshop Express to the Rescue!

Posted 04/04/2008 at 10:28:07pm

Adobe has a reputation for being bloody control freaks. Take a look at the EULA for any of the their Creative Suites and you'll find a part that basically says, if you install any part of the suite on a computer, you can't install other parts on a different computer, even if it's yours. That really sucks. I have their Production Studio Premium suite and I want to install part of it on my desktop and other parts on my laptop. Not only can't I do that legally, they fixed it so your computer MUST contact Adobe so they can sniff your system to make sure your following the rules. Nice.

Read a Good (or Bad) EULA or Terms of Service Lately?

Posted 04/04/2008 at 09:50:17pm

I'm glad Adobe's changing 8a. There's some changes I'd to see them make to their Production Studio suite EULA. Having said that, If your willing to post material on a publicly accessible forum, then you better expect that work is most likely going to end up on someone else's computer, private or commercial. Admittedly, I've snatched a few pics from various public photo sites for use as wallpaper, and I know at least one of my pics I posted on Flickr is now adorning a wall somewhere in Second Life. No big deal. You post pics because you WANT to share them with others. If your looking to profit from your photos, then you'd be an idiot to UL them to a public service. Personally, I'd be happy to see my pics used in some official way. That says it was interesting enough to warrant their attention. Now, what about pics that you've made "Private" on a service, if such an option is available? Well, that's a different story. Your using their service, but they're NOT to be shared, which, to me, also means they can't be used by the service for their own purposes.

Daily News Brief: PS3 Fans, Are You Ready to Ruuumble?

Posted 02/29/2008 at 02:12:07pm

Whomever is writing these story synopsis needs to look them over before posting. I've found various syntax, spelling and word omissions over the past several days. Here's todays: iHaptic: "...a pair PhD students..." Should be, "...a pair of PhD students..." Microsoft: "...more than twice as much as the $613 fine..." In context, most will assume that's in millions of dollars, but it should be explicitly stated for clarity. Paypal: The "Here" link takes you to Fox's site instead of CNNMoney. Hackers: "...including keys to unlock encryption..." Should be, "...including the keys for unlocking the encryption..." Hackers: "...for up to hours..." If a specific number goes here, it's missing. If your speaking generally, it should simply read, "...for hours..." All minor changes, but it can make the difference between professional-looking and amateurish writing.

Dell Drop Kicks Proprietary Parts

I have to admit, I didn't know about this. There was a time when Dell, by default, didn't use proprietary parts. In fact, that was one of the reasons I used to recommend Dell to folks. I even used to own a Dell that didn't have such parts. Well, I'm glad they're not doing it anymore, but like someone else said, I wonder if it's an across-the-board policy.

Daily News Brief: OLED Keyboard Materializes!

Optimus: I remember reading about this when it was first announced. Very cool. Also, very expensive. I don't see this ending up in most homes, but a must-have for the tech-junkie. I can also see this showing up in the sci-fi movie/TV arena. eBay: I can /kinda/ see the need for raising fees, but to not allow negative feedback is just plain wrong. I've had a couple bad buying experiences and being able to tell others about it is important.

Daily News Brief: Convert Your HD-DVDs

Piracy: The RIAA must really be getting desperate to make such claims. Blue-Ray: Personally, I didn't care who won out, just as long as SOMEONE did. As for DLing flicks being the next big thing, I doubt it, not for some years anyway. Right now, consumers just don't have the bandwidth to make it worthwhile. MS Sharing: Like someone else said, "yeah, right". MS doesn't do anything without some kind of agenda. Wouldn't be surprised if there was some hidden goodies in the tools they're "giving" to developers. AMD: At least some good news. I hope Intel follows suit, especially since I have one of their quad core chips. SP1: Wow, there's a big surprise. Watch for patch-a-mania afterwards.
