Windows 7 Review: XP vs Vista vs 7 in 80+ Benchmarks
Posted 08/12/2009 at 08:45:05pm
I left XP behind even before SP1 of Vista for the added security and UI improvements over XP. Yes, there were a lot of problems and incompatibilities and general slowness of the OS compared to XP. It was not as snappy and definitely needed more overhead, but everyone seems to forget that XP had a lot of the same issues when it first came out, and it took until SP2 (as mentioned in the article) for XP to become stable and relatively secure.
Win7 is basically Vista R2, but that's not a bad thing. The speed, UI improvements, and the fixing of Vista's always-broken audio subsystem are enough to make it a required upgrade from Vista. It is time to leave XP behind. It was a stable, good OS from MS, but Win7 promises, even in its RC version to be a greater OS at launch than any MS OS ever.
No one HAS to upgrade from XP to Win7, but they should seriously consider it. And think of how much harder the Apple zealots will have to struggle to differentiate their OS from Windows. Hell, that's enough reason for me. ;)
The 16 Most Essential Firefox 3.5 Add-ons

TabMixPlus is definitely needed, so add my vote to the others. I have been using AdBlock Plus for a while now, but am trying Foof, which is based on AdBlock, but allows you more options for dealing with ads.
I can't believe Greasemonkey isn't on this list, though. That's extremely essential.

Thanks for this one. I'm looking at getting the exact camera you used for testing, so I know which card I'm getting, without a doubt.

Weave sounds almost identical to Xmarks (formerly Foxmarks). What are the differences? Which is better?
Use Your Web Browser's History to Identify Your Gender

Likelihood of you being FEMALE is 2%
Likelihood of you being MALE is 98%
Spot on, though I'm not sure how it works. The list of sites and the ratio numbers are just gibberish to me.

For example, Bioware recommends that you set Neverwinter Nights to use a single core, and they even provide a command in one of the .ini files for the game where you can set it permanently. I did that and noticed a minor improvement in frame rates.
So older apps may benefit, but newer multithreaded ones won't.
Patent Suit Shone on Microsoft's Silverlight

Sounds like yet another one of those patents that under any kind of scrutiny is seen as far to general and could be applied to anybody Gotuit chose to sue. Let's hope the patent folks finally get their heads out of their bums and catch up with technology to strike this sort of idiocy down.
