Rumor: Asus Accounts for 80% of All P45-Based Motheboard Sales
Posted 10/07/2008 at 12:10:13pm
Not if I can help it. Their website is infuriatingly slow. Downloading drivers from Asus' website is the worst torture known to man. I'm not going to buy any more boards from them until they stop running their website on a pentium pro in their basement with a 56k dial-up connection. The only way I would buy from Asus right now is if the board is EXTREMELY compelling compared to the alternatives from MSI, Gigabyte, etc.
It's kind of sad because I like their boards and their features, but I'd rather take forty lashes than download another driver from Asus.
Maximum PC Gets Screwed So You Don't Have To: Ultimate Screwdriver Review Roundup
Posted 09/24/2008 at 12:33:14pm
This is an awesome idea. Though sadly I doubt something like this could be done that would appeal to minimalists or people like me who like the Unix philosphy ("Do one thing, do it well."). I have no interest in all these multi-bit ratcheting gadgets. I just want a good quality plain ol' phillips screwdriver. Fortunately for me I stumbled across one at a gas station in the middle of nowhere when I needed to buy a screwdiver to fix the mirror on a moving van. It has just the right shape to allow it to work very well with just about any kind of phillips screw regardless of size. It's unbelievably better than any other phillips screwdriver I've ever used. So for now I use it for all my computer work and I'm happy--until some day when I lose it or someone takes it or I can't find it. Then I don't know what I'll do. I'll have to either go back to using crappy screwdrivers or start a quest to find a new one.
Nvidia to Finally Deliver Multi-Monitor SLI Support in September?

I would suggest that the GPU PhysX support may be more than just a pop.

I like good graphics. I don't think we should have to compromise on either graphics or gameplay. Give me both.

I can't get into MMO's because I'm not going to pay $200 a year to play a game when I can play Team Fortress 2 all year long for free.
Nvidia Will Be Ready for Bloomfield- But No Native Chipset
Posted 07/25/2008 at 03:45:32pm
bloomfield is to nehalem as yorkfield is to penryn
I believe what the author is saying is that Nvidia will not (at least initially) be making an nForce chipset for nehalem, nor will it be enabling SLI directly on Intel chipsets. What it will do is put out a special chip that can be added to an Intel chipset motherboard that will enable SLI
Edit: I can't believe this press release from nvidia is almost two weeks old and I haven't seen anything about this anywhere. This is major news. Here's a link to nvidia's press release since this author didn't link any sources: http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1216019719164.html
Are Quad-Core Mobile Procs Overkill?
Posted 07/24/2008 at 02:06:40pm
Dual core is still good enough for desktops. Dual cores are actually better than quads for gaming due to higher clock speeds and the lack of games utilizing more than two cores.
The only people who need quad core are people who do photo and video stuff or lots of media encoding. Quads are also good for DC, but I doubt very many people base purchasing decisions on how well their rig can fold proteins.
Do Mainstream Users Need a Bloodhound to Find Their Address Bar?
Posted 07/18/2008 at 03:54:21pm
A big part of the problem is the proliferation of TLD's. Unless it's a site I visit regularly, I always use the search bar rather than the URL bar because I don't know the TLD.

eBay Snubs Smaller Sellers in Favor of Large Retailers
Posted 07/15/2008 at 11:01:24am
I don't know what everyone else is complaining about. I can still find plenty of good deals on ebay. For example, it's pretty easy to grab a like new set of Klipsch Promedia 2.1's on ebay for well under $100 including shipping. Check newegg or bestbuy and you'll be paying over $150.
Plus Ebay is a GREAT place to find non-retail items, old stuff, and used stuff. On ebay you can stumble across all kinds of insteresting good deals. Like for example you can sometimes find great deals on sample merchandise that is not meant for retail sale but is identical to the retail items.
Now as for the actually subject of the article, in general I don't like ebay catering to the big guys. Ebay will lose it's usefulness if it becomes just another retail store rather than a place where anyone can sell something. That said, the sellers who are trying to compete on the same level with retail are not the kinds of sellers I'm intereted in buying from. The sellers I want to buy from are the ones who can significantly undercut retail by selling used items, non-retail items, hard-to-find items, stuff obtained cheaply in estate auctions, sample items, etc.
