Mozilla Launches Fennec Alpha 2 – Is This the Safari Killer?

Posted 12/29/2008 at 02:12:45pm

...but it still needs work (guess that's why it's an alpha and not a beta).

The design concept here is to have as little clutter as possible on the screen to maximize the web content.  The rendering performace appears to be on par with the existing browser on the N800 (which is honestly the best I've seen for hand-held devices IMHO).  But this one supports extensions!

The Nokia 8x0 platform is an easy choice to use as a test platform for Fennec since it is practically a linux computer anyways, has a higher-res 800x480 screen, and it already uses a Mozilla browser (part of Maemo OS2008) but the N800 lacks the implementation of a good graphical processor so some of the cool features of Fennec, such as finger-scrolling the web page to the side a-la ipod Touch to view your bookmarks and other options, lag badly and feel awkward.

I'm looking forward to inevitably seeing this browser on a more capable device with better finger-scrolling support but so far it looks really promising.

10 Most Pirated Games of 2008: Spore Takes Top Honors

Has anyone notices that there are no Valve games on the list?  Has Steam really successfully avoided the piracy problem?  Has Left4Dead even been pirated yet?

"Monster vs Monster" Pits Goliath Cable Maker Against David-Sized Mini Golf Company

no more-- i don't care how sweet a sale.

And I agree -- ban all Monster cables until they give this up and give the money back to the companies they stole it from.  I will bet all alleged 400 companies they forced to settle so far were relatively small companies -- no way Disnew and Monster.com folds.  I would also bet they will never attempt to sue the big companies because they know those guys have the money to pony up the lawyers to fight and beat them.

The law firm that took this case should lose their license.  This is predatory and abusive use of the law at it's worst.

That lame comment actually made Crytek look good for their over-the-top requirements for Crysis. All is forgiven Crytek!

How To: Stream Any Video to Your Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo Wii

I'm using it to stream video to my n800.  Having trouble with the ipod Touch however.  It's kinda cool to be able to play video on my portable device without having to down-grade it first and it plays great.  This is nice since i've started ripping all my dvd's to a media server.

I'm gonna see if I can get TV tuner to steam using this...

Gaming Not-Roundup: Is Pirating Spore the Right Thing to Do?

Posted 09/15/2008 at 12:18:41pm

So the pirates now believe they are the cure to the problem they created.  You know, it’s true what they say:  99% of all criminals really are morons.

I am encourage that the general attitude in this forum agrees that stealing Spore is not the solution and that DRM is only going to make matters worst.

I agree: EA and all the other companies are taking a path toward self destruction with their solution.  They really should take a look at the music industry to figure out the right thing to do.  As you recalled, the more the music industry imposed DRM on everyone, the more people pirated.  Amazon got it right:  price the music fairly with no DRM and there will be no reason to pirate.

And lets not forget that DRM is expensive, not just to EA but to you and I – the PC Gamers of the World.  I can’t sell, trade, or even give away my copy of a game after I am done with it.  Our console brothers can, which makes things a little more affordable (even after you factor in the additional $10 licencing surcharge they have to pony up) and give them the option to buy the game used for a little bit less money.

This is something I hope they add to Steam – the ability for me to transfer my ownership of a game on Steam to someone else either for money or charity.  Steam already allows you to install the game as many times as you want on as many computers as you want, trumping EA’s DRM scheme.  This last piece may abolish the use of DRM for good. And then the pirates will have to find some other “worthy cause” to give meaning to their pointless existance.

Microsoft Cries Foul, 235 Times

Posted 05/23/2007 at 11:22:24am

the only reason i still use Microsoft is games! When will the game developers dump DirectX for OpenGL?!?!? If its good enough for Id it should be good enough for everybody. And when will Macromedia wake up and make Flash run on natively on Linux? My kids can't go to Disney.com without Flash! Too bad that Microsoft has to do this. While I still use XP, Vista isn't bad. But operating systems are becoming a commodity and there isn't much difference between them (many modern linux distros are amazingly capable). I think Microsoft needs to wake up and face the changing market rather then try to sue it into submission.
