$1000 Budget PC Buyer's Guide - October 2009

That the XPS 8000 only offers DDR3-1066 RAM, not DDR3-1600.
And the best graphics card Dell offers on the XPS 8000 is an nVidia GTX260, which, while a capable video card, is not DX11 ready.
And the price, at the moment at least, for a XPS 8000 outfitted as close to this rig as possible is $1278.
So yeah, other than being completely wrong, you're absolutely right.
And this isn't even going into the potential differences in components...
The Game Boy: Killing Millions Since 1857
Posted 10/15/2009 at 10:50:27am
Anyone remember GTA: San Andreas? How the plot is driven by framing the main character for the murder of one cop? When, by the time you've gotten to that point, you've probably murdered dozens of cops, gangbangers, and innocent bystanders?
Microsoft Plans to Inundate New PCs with Ads-ridden Office 2010 Starter Edition

Ubuntu does label things in English, and you don't even have to touch the command line if you don't want to. All that's left is the games, and frankly, it's more a matter of game devs supporting Linux than Linux supporting games.
Unbelievable: "123456" Most Common Hotmail Password
Posted 10/07/2009 at 12:17:21pm
I have a Hotmail account with a 123456 password. However, in my defense, I don't actually use that account for anything I actually care about; it's just for registrations on sites I don't plan to go back to and I suspect might spam me.
In fact, if I actually sign up for a site with that account, it's usually a username that I'll put on Bugmenot when I'm done.

Microsoft has always worked on a 2-3 year cycle between major OS upgrades. Windows XP's five-year lifespan was an anomaly
Hulu Internally Beta Testing Subscription Based Service
Posted 09/21/2009 at 11:00:24am
The only way I can see this working out is if Hulu keeps the current free service and adds a "value-added" subscription service with absolutely no advertising and perhaps a few other perks (larger episode archives, etc). Otherwise, people will just go back to what they did before Hulu -- namely, Bittorrent.
The suits don't get it yet -- they're competing with free.
AT&T to Let You Patch the Dead Zone in Your House for $20 per Month
Posted 09/21/2009 at 10:56:32am
T-Mobile's Hotspot@home service is actually free if you buy a compatible phone. The extra $10 per month is only if you want unlimited calls over VOIP, or a separate line for VOIP, rather than VOIP calls using up your minutes like normal.
This is a pretty dick move on AT&T's part. "For just $20 bucks a month, you can use your own bandwidth to help us expand our network!"

They might as well just bundle the splashtop OS; it's going to be more capable than Win7 Starter.
Dell Already Offering New Zunes for 15% Off
Posted 09/14/2009 at 12:02:31pm
The last time I ordered from Dell, it took me a freaking month to get my video card.
I think I'd rather just pay the extra 15% and go elsewhere.
