Microsoft Targets Apple, the Response? “A PC is no Bargain!”
Posted 05/06/2009 at 02:51:21pm
Apple gets to build the whole machine, gets to pick over what software can be installed and offers no upgrades. In other words Apple advertises and sells a complete computer. Despite this, Microsoft continually tries to counter by touting their OS. They have no control over hardware or application software, yet place themselves in the sights for the whole PC industry.
I used to build my own machines but I was so poor at it that I could not fix the small nag/hiccups that showed up, usually in BSOD form. I continually cursed Windows. I finally got so mad I bought a Macbook Pro, which has run flawlessly for almost 2 years. However the limited ability to home network and the lack of decent gaming made me buy a full tower with Vista. Guess what? It kicks Apple's ass, is stable and actually networks!! Rock solid and completely satisfying.
Microsoft needs to quit taking the heat for the PC industry and start promoting Windows on its own. Hell they could even start a campaign whereby they promote Windows 7 as the preferred OS for mac hardware. Say, "Enjoy the "cool" of owning a Mac but benefit from the flexibility, networking and open source that Windows 7 offers" or something like that. Why does Microsoft care what hardware their OS runs on? They are hurting from the cheap hardware builds of computer manufacturers.
Plus they should do everything they can to keep Ballmer out of the spotlight. His childish rants and arrogance only hurt.

When Gordon actually praised the Mac Pro I knew something was wrong. Someone has slipped in decaf coffee as a practical joke.
I agree with another poster though; this is the best tech podcast out there.

OK then, I thought there might have been mention of the new computer with the Nehalem processor, 8-core with room for 32G Ram, 4 cable-free drive bays and a 4870 video card running vista??

I know I know it's a Mac, but I thought there might have been mention of the new Mac Pro with the Nehalem processor, not necessarily about the Mac but the processor itself.

No, not a fanboi (that name is sooo getting old anyway), just looking to see what is indeed the maximum pc. Don't you want to know?? That seems a lot more "fanboi" than simply asking for a comparison.

While I enjoyed this weeks podcast, including the rant, I think Gordon is going a little OTT on this Apple thing. He berates Jeremy for liking Apples, then bitches about spending his off-time fixing other people's computers. I'm betting they weren't Apples he was fixing. Then he rants about Apple f***ing Jeremy over his iphone. Care to comment on the $200 plus Gordon spent on Vista? Where's the rebate on that? Whether you like it or not, the Mac is a fine computer, and since it runs Windows natively, is a PC in every respect. Why don't you man up and do a solid comparison of say, the 8-core Mac Pro versus a Dell workstation? Or even an imac versus a comparable PC? Mac Pro had 8-core when Dell was still dreaming about it. 64-bit? Check. Cable-free hard drive connection? Right there. Alright, it might not have the best video card, but many many other things make a PC. Let PC Gamer ignore the mac. Until you do you cannot claim to represent the MAXIMUM PC.

I heard one very quick reference to Jeremy perhaps not being on the podcast any more. Is this the case? I would certainly miss him, plus I was really hoping you guys would expand on the imac versus a comparably priced PC. Also, now that Macs (at least the intel ones) can comfortably run Windows, perhaps you could outfit a Mac Pro with Windows and give us a comparison with some PC's. The Mac Pro has an 8-core option, so I'm fairly sure (Gordon notwithstanding) this would be a fairly fast machine.
