Extensions Look Imminent for Google Chrome
Posted 11/17/2009 at 07:33:56pm
I like the way the article states "that Chrome extensions don't, yet slow down the browser". Sure with just 2 it's going to slow down.
I tried using Chrome, and a few things bothered me. One, is I don't like a stripped down browser. I prefer to have my bookmarks on the side. I have a 24" wide screen monitor, and have plenty of real estate for it. Why waste all that space. Also, I hate that you can't stop a loading site. As far as I can tell, once you click on a site, it will continue load unless you close the browser. Both Windows Explorer and Firefox allow you to stop the downloading of a site. A number of times I have hit the wrong link, and started to download a site I did not want, and it was taking a goodly amount of time to download. Had to close Chrome to stop it. Also, I have had no problems with the speed of Firefox, and did not see a great improvement with Chrome. I would like to see the new version of Firefox with independent process for each tab, but it is not a deal breaker.
Computer Security Company Takes Out Enormous Botnet

The most important thing is for the ISPs to notify their customers to clean their PCs. I think more effort should go into finding zombies and informing the user to clean up their PCs or loose connection.
Google Co-founder Insists on More Computers in Schools

So you think that all it costs is $600 per student. That would work out to about $18,000 per classroom of 30 kids. So you are telling me that you are going to pay the teacher, faculty overhead, upkeep on the building, etc. for 18K per room. Yea right!!
Also, if you are going to spread around data like 30K per student, cite your source. According to the New York times, the cost per student in New York state is $14,119 per student (still quite high, but 1/2 half what you quoted) and the average in the nation is $8,701.
Why don't you try to find out what the true cost of your religious schooling is. Someone is obviously subsidizing the crap out of it if it is only costs you $600.

Comcast Insists It's Here to Stay
Posted 10/22/2009 at 10:11:40pm
I have had Comcast where I live, and have had good luck. Here are my results from Speed Matters. This was tonight at 8:05 pm PST:
My Result - 13441kbps
My State - 4078 kbps
Only Japan and Korea are faster with 15787 and 20429 respectively. Sorry I could not linclude graphic, looks like Max PC won't accept.
I have found these numbers to be consistent over many tries. Don't know if I have a cap, nobody told me I do, and have never exceeded anything yet.

Sidekick Data Flub could be Bad News for Microsoft

Shades of the old main frame/ Mini computing. It really doesn't matter if MS has redundancy up the yin-yang, your ISP or router or whatever could go out and you are screwed. I remember when we all had to depend on the IT gods to let us use their systems. That was why PCs were adopted. Not going back - ever.
Yahoo Swears It's Doing Just Fine Without Microsoft

Just want to say that I like Yahoo. I have it as my second tab after MaxPC. Like the new layout with access to Facebook, Yahoo Financial, Yahoo Mail etc on the side. Few small problems, but overall a good update.
Chrome Frame May Be Coming to a Firefox Browser Near You
Posted 10/01/2009 at 07:05:42pm
This makes no sense. I have been using Chrome browser for a couple of weeks now, and 2 sites did not render correctly in Chrome, but when I fired up Fire Fox they rendered OK. One site was "fixed" in a couple of days, but it was Chrome that had the problem. If they want an extension, why not use something like "Open in IE" only label it "Open in Chrome"?. Open in IE works great for those few times that Fire Fox has a problem with a site.
Oh, bye the way, I think I will return to Fire Fox. The only plus Chrome has is that each tab has it's own process, and usually one tab won't hang the whole program. I did have one case where I was downloading something and it hung, it also hung the entire Chrome browser and I had to kill Chrome to continue. The thing I don't like about Chrome is the way it handles bookmarks. I prefer to have them in my left pane. I have a fairly large monitor (24 ") and have plenty of room for them there. I hate to spelunk though the "Other bookmarks" folder each time I need something that is not in the bookmark bar. Also, no extensions in Chrome yet.
Microsoft's Free Security Software Launches Today

I think a previous post is correct. We need a smakdown with this new MS program and the free ones. Also, add in a paid one or two, like Norton and/or or Macafee. This would be a great service.
