Redownloads No Longer Free on iPhone App Store
Posted 06/03/2009 at 08:34:32am
Most G1 apps can be saved to your SD card (and then copied to your PC or wherever via the USB cable) for backup, if you desire. With a rooted phone, ALL apps can be backed up to your SD card.
It's not particularly necessary though, because as I mentioned before your purchased apps are associated with your google account, so you can *always* redownload them as needed--even if you break your phone and have to get a new one. Redownloading everything might be a pain in the ass, but at least you don't have to pay for them again, like the *ahem* cool kids do.
Redownloads No Longer Free on iPhone App Store

I'm not an iPhone owner, so this policy doesn't really effect me. Google's policy with android apps (where your purchase is tied to your google account, and you can redownload as needed) seems very logical and sensible to me.
BTW, does the message really read, "or TAB Buy to BUT it again"? Because if so, that shit is hilarious!
(Fifteen seconds later) Oh wait, I just looked at the picture. It doesn't say that. Doh!
Freeware Roundup: Version Checkers, Display Calibrators, Console Enhancers!

You're right. I followed a misleading ad link at the bottom of the page and ended up with something else. Thanks very much for the link. It's a pretty sweet little program.

So is there an actual FREE driver updater out there? Drivermax requires $30 before it will actually help you fix anything, which by my definition is not free.
Android Tethering App Pulled – What’s Next?
Posted 04/06/2009 at 09:46:22am
Any chance you could provide a link? I've been really seriously thinking about switching to T-Mobile and getting a G1 lately, and not being able to tether is one of the big reasons I haven't done it yet.
Thanks.

I stopped correcting minor typos around here a long time ago, thinking it a fruitless endeavor, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE correct the "have went" in the first sentence of this article. That's just egregious.
It should read, "...may not have GONE entirely back..."
Boston Power's Long-Lived Batteries Now Available with HP Laptops
Posted 03/26/2009 at 12:53:58am
The first one comes with your computer, so doesn't count toward the $70.
By the time you're buying the second, your laptop (and battery) is a year old, so finding a reasonable battery on ebay shouldn't be difficult. The last time I replaced my laptop battery (in December) it was about $35 on ebay.
By the time you purchase the third battery, your laptop is two years old, so $35 batteries ought to be growing on trees.
It's Worse than Microsoft Thinks: IE8 Users Downgrade to IE7
Posted 03/24/2009 at 10:42:34pm
Really, does it take a genius to figure out what's going on here?
From the article, "IE8's market share ramped up to 2.59 percent on Sunday. By Monday, that number dropped to 1.86 percent and today sits at 1.17 percent." So, people went home and downloaded IE8 to their home computers, surfed around a bit and IE8's market share went up to 2.59%. These people then went back to work on Monday, where their software is mandated by an IT guy who hasn't bothered/has no reason to update the company's software to IE8, so they're all using IE7 at work. Thus 8's market share drops to 1.17%. I think it's a fairly decent bet that it's going to swing back up again this weekend.
This article's assertion that people must be uninstalling IE8 and reverting back to IE7 is a pretty irresponsible piece of reporting.
BTW, I don't know what's wrong with you guys' chrome installs (mentioned in earlier comments), but I run chrome ALL the time (right this second, actually), and never have any crashes. (On Vista 64 Home Premium, btw.) I find it to be solid as a rock.
Privacy Group Calls on FTC to Kill Google Docs
Posted 03/19/2009 at 07:21:33pm
I think the real reason behind this lawsuit appears at the end of the article, in the sentence, "EPIC also wants Google to pay $5 million into a "public fund" to benefit advocacy groups."
Barring a HUGE lawsuit and enormous legal action, Google is not going to shut down gmail. It would leave millions and millions of people without email and would turn a whole hell of a lot of public opinion against Google. This lawsuit is obviously just a fishing scheme by EPIC to try to get some funding. For some reason they believe that Google owes them $5 million for trying to shut down some of Google's biggest services?
Anyone who uses any cloud computing should understand that there are risks involved in the action, and that you are putting trust in the company(ies) who is hosting your apps/info. If you can't fathom the possibility of security breaches, downtime and/or bugs, then you probably shouldn't own a computer at all.

Seriously? $150 for a battery?
You'd be much better off to go with the cheaper (1 year) battery, then replace it in a year (and again the year after that). That would probably be a total cost output of $70 or less--if your laptop even lasted that long.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all for doing some good for the environment, but it's not like we've all got money to burn these days.
