Startup Takes Forever

Posted 09/10/2009 at 08:42:16am

I like WinPatrol myself.  It has a free and paid version, and not only allows you to view, disable, or delay startup applicaions, but it also monitors new startup applications, browser plugins, registry services, and internet settings (like your hosts file) and alerts you if something was changed.  If you don't want something changed, click the no box and WinPatrol reverses the mod.  It keeps a cache of your settings and checks every 5 minutes or so, so sometimes you see an alert a bit after the fact.

Scotty is on patrol (and just plain awesome).  I'll disable my on-access scan in my anti-virus when playing certain bulky games, but WinPatrol is ligh-weight enough that I leave it on all the time... I trust Scotty with my machine's life.

Release Notes: My 5 Favorite Apps & Utilities, the Early 2009 Edition

I'm not familiar with TomBoy, but I use Freemind on Win to keep notes.  It takes a bit to get used to, but basically supports building heirarchy trees.  You can even encrypt particular nodes (for keeping account numbers etc).  I use it to keep game notes at home, general information like City office addresses and numbers, to do lists at work, server names and logins, names of other teams' members I work with (I'm horrible with names and work with an average of 6 different groups at a time, and just about anything I need to be able to browse through and find quickly.  Definitely worth checking out.

Pretty sure it was a MaxPC recomendation, but it's been so long I don't remember for sure.

I don't even see a difference in the numbers... except the 9 in the first ad doesn't much look like the 1 in the second... but then that's kinda the point ;) .

Choose the Perfect Online Backup Storage Solution and Free Your Files

Any suggestions for 1TB backup for Linux?  Carbonite, Mozy, and Backblaze all seem to be Windows/Mac only.  I built my media server on Linus to avoid the Windows license, but I'd hate to have to re-encode all those files.

PC Gaming Alliance: Let's Use Piracy for Fun and Profit

I've never pirated a game, DRM or no (although I do use no-cd cracks on games I own).  This scheme would look to me like the developer endorsing "pirated" copies of the game and making that a legitimate distribution model.  I would actually be more likely to "pirate" a game under this model.

MEATBAG!  LOL!

From what I saw I'm surprised anyone was fooled.  The answers to my questions were totally disconnected from reality.
