Windows Vista SP1 By the Numbers, Part 2

Posted 12/12/2007 at 08:40:29am

"Fortunuately, one of the big improvements in Windows Vista SP1 is support for hotpatching, which enables Windows components to be updated without rebooting." It's about darn time that M$ figured out how to install updates without requiring a reboot! Nothing I hate more than waiting for my PC to reboot just because I installed an update.

Heal and Inoculate Your PC

I personally like to use nLite to build my bootable XP CDs with SP2 and all of the MS Updates slipstreamed in. You can find nLite here: http://tinyurl.com/dxlrw. And you can grab a nice little package with a lot of the post-SP2 updates from this site: http://tinyurl.com/yqpepd. While the updates haven't been maintained recently, they do give you a huge leg up when you need to wipe your system clean and start all over again. You can also download all of the post-SP2 updates from Microsoft individually and slipstream them using nLite if you really want to make sure you have all of the latest patches.

As we all know, most people just accept the EULA without a second thought about it (I know I've even done it in the past, though I've gotten into the habit of reading them thoroughly now). Putting the warning into the EULA won't provide the vast majority of users with enough of a warning about the rootkit.

PC Building Guide FAQ: Part 1

Posted 07/16/2007 at 09:03:07am

I've been building my own PCs and PCs for friends now for almost 8 years. I like the fact that I can pick and chose EVERY component of a system when I build it myself. Instead of getting stuck with proprietary or crappy hardware, I know that I am getting good quality hardware that I can easily upgrade whenever I choose. If all you want to do is surf the web, then by all means, go for that Dell... But if you want to be able to play all of the latest game titles, including yet-to-be-released titles, you're better off building your own rig. I can easily swap out my 7900GS for that 8800 Ultra (which is coming soon!) to get better frame rates in BF2 or what ever game I am playing at the time because I took the time to build my system with my needs in mind, carefully selecting the hardware that was right for me.

I checked the link to lifecycle/servicepacks.mspx and got "We're sorry, the page you requested cannot be found."... I looked at the address displayed and noticed it was missing the trailing "x"... Just add the x to the end of the url and you'll be good to go....

Car != Computer, and I'll take the latter!

Having spent 12 years as an aircraft mechanic with the Air Force and the 2 years preceding my military service as an auto mechanic, I can fully appreciate this little tale. I got out of being a mechanic to get away from headaches like that! Imagine a simple little hydraulic valve held in place by three bolts and four aluminum lines, then imagine that it took 3 people to remove that same little part. Then try to imagine it taking almost 2 hours to remove and replace it. I almost miss it sometimes... Nah, who am I kidding?!?! I'll take working on any server or PC over working on cars or aircraft ANY day!
