Firefox Addon of the Week: Weave Browser Sync

Posted 03/09/2010 at 08:47:19am

I think I'll stick with Xmarks for now - the ability to sync my bookmarks across all my laptops, Macs, PCs, and various different browsers (IE, Safari, firefox, chrome) is more useful to me than just sync of my firefox info.

Future Tense: The 15% Rule of Overclocking

Posted 02/04/2010 at 08:37:24pm

...But I think different people will want different thresholds:

While a 15% performance increase in certain measures is noticeable, for some people the threshold may be higher (like 20% for me - I once tested this on myself.)

And for yet others, a 1-2% increase in performance may make economic sense even if it does not rate a perceptual measurement.

Personally, I try to not upgrade unless I am at least doubling as many of the major component measurements as a I can. For example, I moved from a 1Ghz P3, to a 2Ghz AMD Athlon64 3200+, to a Core2Quad Q9300 at 2.5Ghz. The first machine maxed out at 512MB PC133 SDRAM RAM, the second at 4GB PC3200 DDR RAM, and the 3rd at 8GB PC2800 DDR2 RAM. And vid cards went from 128MB Nvidia 4600, to 256MB ATI X850 XT, to Nvidia 1GB 9800GX2. Each new machine was a huge increase over the last one, and each actually cost about the same as the one it replaced.

(the old machines were retired to servers on my LAN, and usually run folding@home)

ION iType is "World's First Desktop Keyboard" for the iPhone

Posted 01/08/2010 at 09:44:22pm

I think nearly all the modern aluminum Macintosh wireless keyboards are bluetooth keyboards. Have been for some time. They are VERY common.

Yep, just checked store.apple.com... the Apple Wireless Keyboard they sell is bluetooth.

So, in theory, with dev support, a BT keyboard could work with the iphone (but not the itouch - which just has wifi)

I think many of these products sound really compelling, but they are too pricey for my cash flow. What does MaxPC say?

The chart compares the 4870 to the 5770... did you mean to label it the 5970?

David Gerrold writing for MaximumPC? His book When HARLIE Was One (release 2.0) was one of the books I read that effected my degree choice in college (double major: Cognitive Science and Philosophy... so many years ago). Thanks for that great stuff!

I wionder what Turing would have thought about the advent of CAPTCHA - sort of the reverse Turing Test. Also, I'd love to have seen Turing argue with John Searle (Slusser Professor of Philosophy at the UC Berkeley, and another philosopher dealing with AI and minds, but who I think would disagree with Turing about many things).

Good stuff, Mr. Gerrold. Thank you.

Have you considered working with James P. Hogan on an update of his "Mind Matters" book? (great intro to AI for the non-scientist)

I've been able to sync my BlackBerry Pearl with my iTunes collection for some time now. It's not just iPods. That's a lie.

Of course... I don't use iTunes to do tha sync. But why should that matter? I don't use Windows Media Player to share my video collection around that house, either.
