Everything Firefox Users Need to Know About Internet Explorer 8

Posted 09/03/2008 at 02:27:39pm

It seems peculiar to me to provide an overview of a browser strictly by way of comparison with a single competing browser. Will the next version of Safari be compared to Opera? I say either create a feature table with all major browsers listed, or simply discuss what's new in this version over the old version. It's just weird.

Microsoft Sidewinder X5

Because I find the original Sidewinder to be quite comfortable for even extended gaming sessions. And I can't even palm a basketball. Do I sense hand envy on the editorial staff?

Gaming Roundup 8/21/08: Tin Men

When playing Fallout 2 for the first time, I decided to kill every last person in Las Vegas. I washed away all their sins...with their own blood.

Generally speaking though, I play Mr. Nice Guy Hero in RPGs. My avatar in KOTOR was a blindingly pure Light Side Jedi halfway through the game. And then I played it through again...this time as a blindingly pure Light Side female Jedi. There's variety for you.

Toshiba Goes With Upscaling DVD Player, Another Dis For Blu-ray

Posted 08/18/2008 at 03:59:40pm

I don't begrudge Toshiba a price premium for additional video processing, but why doesn't this player include DVD-A support? I'd prefer a full-featured Toshiba player over OPPO, but Toshiba doesn't offer a full-featured player.

US Median Broadband Speed 30 Times Slower than Japan's While Market Softens

I have the very best service I can get at my residence, which unfortunately is 1.5Mbps/down, 256Kbs/up (via Clearwire). I'd been using DSL @ half those speeds until this past June.

Verizon has been promising FiOS for a couple years now, but they refuse to run it from the street to our house (~100 feet).

VIA Dropping Motherboard Chipset Business

I would have missed VIA as an alternative to NVidia back when I was building Athlon-based computers. But these days? Not so much.

PCs on Average Half the Cost of Macs

Posted 08/07/2008 at 03:52:00pm

When has this not been the case? The remarkable thing now is that despite using the same off-the-shelf parts, Apple customers are still willing to pay the premium. Works out great for Apple.

Symantec: IE 6 More Susceptible to MS Access ActiveX Exploit than Other Versions

Posted 08/06/2008 at 03:42:58pm

I understand that there are probably quite a few server machines out there with IE 6.0 installed as the primary web browser, but then those machines aren't typically used for web-browsing. Everyone else should be running IE 7 or Firefox 2/3. (No, not Opera, and most definitely not Safari.)

Sadly, I noticed that my friend's dad's computer still had an unpatched IE 6 install, which was being used as a vector for bittorrent malware. Good times.

Most Malware Served Up by Legit Websites That Have Been Compromised

Posted 08/06/2008 at 03:35:46pm

First, a confession: I haven't been able to bring myself to log in with a normal user account. Vista's UAC, while annoying, has helped in this regard.

What I do to keep safe(r):

  • Keep my firewall software, virus checker and malware checkers (3) up-to-date.
  • Install security updates for Windows and utilities as soon as they are available.
  • Scan all downloads and melted SEE/compressed folders before executing anything.
  • Avoid websites with higher-than-average pop-up/under ads.
  • Close pop-ups using the system tray icon rather than the window close gadget.
  • Avoid warez and torrent sites.
  • Use only legit, personally-licensed software; Do the same for all computers on our home network.
  • Use strong passwords for all accounts, both local and inet-based; Change them periodically.
  • Use strongest encryption available for wireless network.
  • Share limited number of folders to specific, local user accounts only.
  • Perform periodic system scrub to delete old drivers, uninstall unused utils/apps, etc.

Microsoft Doesn't Want Anyone Stealing Its Mouse Patents

Posted 08/01/2008 at 12:23:44pm

Now that patent ideas can be borrowed, I can go ahead with marketing my 'jPhone' idea. It has a sleek, multi-touch interface that I'm sure Apple won't mind my emulating. They can spare the cash anyway.
