I had a Fedex package recently "left by the door" which required a signature and according to the Fedex tracking was signed for by me. I however was 300 miles away and couldn't have so the vender had another sent to me by Monday of the following week.

... why that UPS delivery man made it all the way to her mailbox, wrote a notice and put it into the mailbox, and then left the package in the garbage can - was the mailbox really too small to accommodate the package containing the tablet ?

1 they are not allowed to put packages in mailboxes in the US.
2. a tablet in a box most likely would not fit in a standard mailbox.

I'm a rural carrier for USPS, that's how I know. I hope that they don't fire him over this. It sounds like he made a quick decision without thinking it through. Those UPS drivers are pushed hard and work long hours this time of year. I see them out long after I got home from delivering mail and packages. They would benefit from keeping an experienced driver who learns from his mistakes.

So let me see, the big tech news, picked up by MaximumPC and cnet and others is that ups got a package lost or the receiver is lying about the package being lost and it will be replaced anyway as soon as bureaucracy allows it?

It's one of several news stories, yes. The biggest? No, though counting this comment I'm leaving now, this story ties the Steam Machine tear down video as our most commented article of the day.

I guess Google's chromebook ads didn't appeal to that woman, or she realized-correctly-that an Android tablet is more useful than a chromebook.

Sadly, in this day and age I wouldn't be surprised if, as was already mentioned, this woman ends up with 2 tablets.

I have my doubts that the UPS driver could be fired for this, though I do wonder if he was daunted by the ice as well.

I'm still bothered by why she chose the Archos 7. I'm on Best Buy's website and there are many tablets sold at the same price as the Archos 7, but better. 840x400 screen size is overly tiny and not family friendly.

What I don't get why the F***k the guy put it inside the trash can anyways ? Yeah I want to get any parcel out of the trash. Very thoughtful. Either the guy is not too bright or he's a dick.

I would understand if it was an iPad he left in the trash. But anyways, Why would a woman who needs to save money buy a tablet for a 6 year old?? It boggles my mind that moronic people would who claim to be broke, would buy such pricey items for Children.

You are critical of a person that saved her own money to buy her child a tablet? I mean what the hell is that supposed to mean? Are you implying that if she couldn't afford it right then and there and didn't have to plan ahead she shouldn't get it at all? That is the point of SAVING MONEY. It never said she was broke. She wanted to get something nice for her kid and saved some money over several months. What boggles my mind is how elitist some people can be.

$175 isn't a lot of money if you have a stable job along with a working father. The tablet is pretty tiny IMO and reviews are telling me it's not very good. The tablet is definitely not for young kids and something tells me they should have gotten a more affordable and "family friendly" tablet by Samsung, Lenovo, or Asus. Their screens are bigger and they offer cheaper models.

The article said the mother saved money for "several months," implying that she doesn't receive a lot of income from her job and may as well be a single mother.

"The article said the mother saved money for "several months," implying that she doesn't receive a lot of income from her job and may as well be a single mother."

And.....

That's most American jobs these days. A person who makes 10 dollars an hour makes roughly 20,800 a year in a 40 hour week. That not even considering most people work less than that, minimum wage jobs. Which is around 7.25 an hour. Even worse are waiters and waitress who makes around 3 something an hour and hoping the tips makes up the difference.

So considering that she has to pay rent, utilities, food, etc... saving up for the cost of a tablet is the only thing she could fork up for months doesn't seem shocking to me.

Even America's multi billion dollar companies somehow get away with paying poverty wages; companies ranging from McDonalds to Walmart.

What makes it worse is that most americans also do not quite realize that they are also paying taxes to SUBSIDIZE companies such as that. Figure that most companies are NOT giving their employees full time and also that most are fully eligible for united states government allowances.

So, anyone want to take a bet how much longer that worthless American flag will remain standing?

One isn't supposed to be a Walmart greeter or shelf-stocker for life. As Walmart's conveniently-timed ad campaign shows, you're supposed to "move up the ranks". UPS has a similar policy, though I've come to learn that if you slog it out as a part time sorting facility worker long enough you can make a halfway decent amount of money for part-time drudgery.

I'm all for getting the government out of business. There was this magical time when business was largely government-free and people got to keep all of their income. I think that it is time to bring this period back as what we've got isn't working.

Carlidan

And when was this magical time?

They're broke for a reason, Pcwolf

Woman is lying.

Makes no sense that the trash would be empty. Because she couldn't bring it back up the slick ice?

No, what happened was the woman found the tablet in the trash and thought "What a dumb place to leave a package, what if the garbage men picked it up...or what if I just tell them that is what happened.'

It is a dumb place to leave a package, and I think this woman is exploiting that fact.

avatar

angryone

It is a stupid place for UPS to leave a package, but I also question her story about the can. She said the garbage men did not pick up until after that package was left and the reason the empty can was there is because the driveway was too icy for her to bring it up. Well, that does not answer why the EMPTY can was out there in the first place. Does she normally take an empty can out for garbage day? If she has an empty can out there, either she took an empty can to the road or the garbage men already picked up.

So what you are saying is that the woman was far smarter than the UPS driver? Seriously, she must by lying because you just stirred up this story in your mind? Wow, dude. Just wow.

If there is an HOA, she should of put her trash container away. Once the trash is picked up, the HOA will fine a person if they leave empty trash barrels out by the curb.

And as far as the Android tablet goes, I think Android and Trash Can are quite synonymous. The UPS driver was probably trying to do her a favor.

avatar

Why does leaving the trash can there make no sense? Makes perfect sense to me in not wanting to slip on my ass if I didn't need to to just pull in a trash can. Apparently West996 had a camera installed and already know's the facts however.

It was a dumb place to leave the package, hell UPS usually leaves packages on my front door step well in view of the entire neighborhood when there are plenty of places at the front my house that they could easily hide it from view (other carriers that deliver to my house manage to hide them out of view easily).

So much for this 'training' they receive.

sounds like it to me.
