Few could have known at the beginning that a platform allowing Internet users to post updates on what they're doing in 140-character chunks would turn out as popular as it has. Today there's no arguing the popularity of Twitter as a major social media tool, but lest you need some hard numbers, try this one on for size. According to an official Twitter blog post, there are now more than one million registered applications designed to work and/or integrate with Twitter.
The development community for Twitter applications now stands at around 750,000 large. A new app is released every 1.5 seconds, and who knows what all those numbers will look like a year from now. Looking back, there were 150,000 Twitter apps available a year ago. This rapid growth translates into big money, and big money opportunities.
"Investors and businesses are taking note. Since December 2010, more than $500 million has been invested in ecosystem companies, and more than a billion dollars has been paid out in acquisitions," Twitter said. "This level of investment is indicative of the opportunity for developers and entrepreneurs to build successful businesses as part of the Twitter platform."
The blog goes on to highlight a few notable Twitter apps that "help people understand and make the most" of the microblogging service, including Mass Relevance , Trendrr , Datasift , Poptweets , and Radian6 , the last of which turned its brand monitoring tools into a thriving business and sold itself off to Salesforce for a cool $326 million.
