Try playing Doom 3 at night with surround sound, the speakers up high, maybe the window open.... It is insanely scary and makes your heart go crazy.

We used to do this in university and even with people there it would scare the crap out of you.

Doom 3 should be in here.

Lighthouse, which was an old sierra adventure game from the mid-90's was pretty scary, in my opinion. Thumbs up on Harvester, too! "Quality Time". :)

ALMA WADE is missing from this article, as others have pointed out. That's a critical miss.

RUSENSITIVESWEETNESS

Maybe I'm a big sissy, but Rage has scared the crap out of me a couple times now. I just started playing a week or two ago. Those mutants creep me out, and when they sneak up on me from behind, I jump out of my seat.

Doom and F.E.A.R. are the only games I can recall ever making me scream in fear.

I bet a lot of people screamed after sliding down that ladder in F.E.A.R.

Thief 3
Shalebridge Asylum

First time I ever got legitimately scared while playing a game.

Nice to see it made the list!

A friend recently told me about Outlast, which I'm going to pickup off Steam when I get home from work today!

avatar

Volleynova

F.E.A.R. or Clive Barker's Undying not in the top ten? Give me a break. Those are the ultimate scary PC games, enjoy.

System Shock 2 is more atmospheric and immersive than scary, but yes, I'm glad to see the mention of it because it is in my top 5 games of all time.

Pulagatha

You know what was a f**ked up game. Harvester. That was crazy.

avatar

jbitzer

A little surprised no phantasmogoria series on here, or some of the older games.

avatar

Brittany Vincent

A Puzzle of Flesh is one of my all-time favorites. Harvester too. You and I would probably have some great conversations. :)

avatar

legionera

No Sanitarium too?

avatar

jbitzer

Aww, I forgot that game! Then there's eternal darkness, but this list is PC only.

avatar

gothliciouz

clearly, this is a list of what the author thinks is scary. not what the average gamers would thinks is scary, such as f.e.a.r, doom 3, the suffering, sillent hills. etc.
most people thinks stalker is not scary at all. i gotta agree on Amnesia: The Dark Descent and outlast though they can really make you jump.

avatar

Nimrod

Most people dont think STALKER is scary??? lol

avatar

Brittany Vincent

Actually, this is a mixture of my own opinion and other "average gamers," as you call them -- and it seems to be the general consensus that F.E.A.R. isn't scary amongst different circles. Like fear though, of course, these lists are going to be subjective. To each their own.

avatar

jbitzer

I'd really like to know who these circles are. I've seen F.E.A.R. on almost every list of scary games I've ever seen. All things being subjective of course.

Then of course S.T.A.L.K.E.R. as I said before, there was one part that was scary, I don't see how it made the list.

A lot of other Monster Closet games I'm glad didn't fill the list, but I'm more affected by psychological horror stuff than the other types, F.E.A.R. has me in sweats while playing, and crappy Japanese little ghost girl movies I usually find stupid.

avatar

Brittany Vincent

When compiling the list I made my own decisions, then for runner-ups I spoke with some friends on, ranging from professional games writers and tech writers to enthusiasts, and F.E.A.R. just didn't strike a chord with them as being terrifying. It was a letdown to me as well, especially as the series progressed. The fact that several games outlets lists it as such is definitely something I disagree with, though I do find S.T.A.L.K.E.R. frustrating and tense in different ways. It's not so much an "oh no, monsters!" terror, but the constant threat of danger.

It saddens me that there aren't honestly enough choices to write about that I feel definitely deserve a place. Silent Hill, of course, but I tried to included more PC-dominant games or those that originated on PC. Fatal Frame is excellent in the same way Outlast is, especially since you're basically defenseless aside from your Camera Obscura.

avatar

jbitzer

Well, I never played the newer FEAR games, I think they went away from the horror as the series progressed, but the first game really moved me.

Clive Barker's Undying (2001)

avatar

Ghok

This is what I always think of when I see a list of "scary games". First (and last) game to really scare me. I don't think I got very far through it at all, haha.

avatar

kixofmyg0t

+1! I love that game!

avatar

Brittany Vincent

Yes, excellent game. Fond memories.

avatar

Nastyman

Has anyone played Cryostasis? There are some creepy moments in it.

avatar

Led Weappelin

Yes! Cryostasis was underrated in so many ways. That entire ghost ship was creepy.

avatar

Led Weappelin

Looking back on it I think there is a generational timeline between what WAS scary in gaming and what is scary NOW.

avatar

Daniel J. Hill

Surprised FEAR didn't make the list. That game was creepy.

avatar

FatOldGuy

Stalker Shadows of Chernobyl and call of pripryat. Both great games with decent scares at times.

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

A couple of the Scariest games I've seen are Government Spy thrillers

Windows 7 and 8 top the list

You never know how real it gets until its too late

avatar

Upyourbucket

Slender Man
Doom 3
The Resident Evil series

probably some others too that I cant think of at the moment

stalker is one was the best game I have played to date. still playing the 3rd one STALKER: Call of Pripya.

steam (posted by someone there)
I like Misery but that one you should know.
If you're looking for something that adds to the whole experience, try Sigerous Mod, often referred to as SGM, or The Way to Pripyat Mod. Both are highly regarded by many.

No Dead Space?

avatar

Nimrod

You mean generic space disaster redone for the ummteenth time? It was a good game but it was a console game anyway.

avatar

Mariongo

Playing Dead Space in full 5.1 audio is a truly awesome and scary experience

avatar

nsvander

I was thinking the same thing!!!

avatar

Led Weappelin

No F.E.A.R. ?

Loved it and would have definitely put it on this list. Scared me. I may have even added "Return To Castle Wolfenstein" to the list.

avatar

Joji

The first FEAR game is nothing. I played it a month or two ago. Enemies are normal and human looking. Even the scary parts of the game weren't that super scary. I personally think Doom 3 was scarier than FEAR 1. The first time I met the "mutant baby flies," I was like, "holy shit that's creepy as hell!"

avatar

jbitzer

I don't find monster closet games scary, making something jump out at you is a cheap scare. Making an ugly villian is not scary, having a hallway turn into a river of blood flowing through a charnel house, making you doubt your sanity on the other hand...

avatar

Granite

Silent Hill.

Great graphics, great music, great story...scary as hell.

avatar

Granite

double post

avatar

SilverSurferNHS

I can't believe FEAR (only the first and its addons) didn't make the list.

avatar

jbitzer

yeah, FEAR was awesome

avatar

praetor_alpha

FEAR only has jump scares; it does not have environment scares like STALKER does.

avatar

jbitzer

I found the parts where you were seeing things that weren't there and wading through rivers of blood to be a little unsettling.

In fact, the only scary thing about stalker is that thing in the pipe that blasts you to death. But then you unload a few magazines in its direction and you're ok.

avatar

Brittany Vincent

Honestly, I didn't find F.E.A.R. scary at all. It was pretty tame most of the time.
