funny en Acer Gives Conan O' Brian S7 Following Unflattering Skit
Mockery is the sincerest form of flattery? Maybe not in this case

We like some of Acer’s products, most notable the Aspire S7 which we awarded a 9 Kick Ass in our review. Still, the company recently made some headlines for being perceived as old, cheap, and out of touch on Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show. The video below shows Conan's mock Acer keynote conference, which was done shortly after Apple’s 9/9/14 event.

See Conan’s Acer keynote conference spoof above.

In the sketch, the show makes fun of Acer's products stating that they offer "free YouTube" and a built-in pill counter among other things. While the comedic jab is definitely unfair, we thought it was hilarious just the same and asked Acer what they thought of it. While our rep stated that the skit certainly wasn’t flattering and pointed out that its conferences actually look more like this, they did admit that it was funny and weren't too bothered by it considering Conan has a history of making fun of big tech companies, such as Apple and Samsung.

In response, Acer sent Conan and his staff an Aspire S7 for him and his crew to try. The company doesn’t expect Conan to do anything with it, but hopes that he and his team will at least view the company in a different light.

What did you think of the video? At work, you could count the holes in the ceiling, crumple pieces of paper and practice your cubicle hook shot, or get lost in a game of Minesweeper, all the while hoping your boss wouldn't wander by.

We have it much easier these days. The Internet isn't just fleshed out, it's flooded with more websites than you'll ever have time to visit. Many of them suck, of course, and several others will leave you with an infection quicker than a one night stand in the red-light district, but there are also a vast number of gems buried beneath all the rubble.

Get ready to add some bookmarks to your browser because we've gone and gathered 57 websites guaranteed to help you kill time when the day just seems to drag on.

Inner Body

The wonder within us all

How much do you really know about your own body? Probably less than you think. Inner Body is your interactive guide to the complex human system and all of its inner workings. Wow your friends by learning everything there is to know about the urinary system!

Magic Secrets Explained

Dispelling the mystery

It's been said that a true magician never reveals his secrets, but that's a bunch of hogwash. In fact, if you head over to Magic Secrets Explained, a site that's just what it sounds like, you can learn a bevy of magic tricks from well-known magicians like Criss Angel, David Blaine, and others.

Dumb Laws

Keeping us safe from ourselves

Did you know that in Kansas, it's illegal to shoot rabbits from motorboats? You're also not allowed to use mules to hunt ducks. In Idaho, riding a merry-go-round on Sunday is against the law. Look up all kinds of dumb laws by state!

Will It Blend

Don’t try this at home

Pretty much anything and everything will blend in a Blendtec blender, but knowing the answer doesn't make the videos on this site any less enjoyable. Watch Blendtec founder Tom Dickson demonstrate his pride and joy shredding things like an iPad, glass marbles, and even Super Glue. We dare you to try and watch just one video.

Quick Meme

Go viral!

Don't let your rapier wit go to waste. Instead, create a hilarious meme and maybe, just maybe, it will go viral. Or it will get lost in the shuffle of the thousands of other memes. Either way, a visit to isn't likely to be quick at all.

You Suck at Photoshop

What not to do

If you're a Photoshop whiz, you might look at the name of this YouTube series and say, "Them's fightin' words!" For everyone else, the You Suck at Photoshop series is a hilarious way to learn the ins and outs by a very talented narrator who clearly has some personal issues.

Someecards

Say it with sarcasm

When you have something sarcastic to say but don't know exactly how to phrase it, Someecards is your go-to site. Why Duct Tape? Well, just head over to Ductivities to see some of the many things you can build with a roll (or dozen) of Duct Tape.

Digital Public Library of America

Grow your melon

If you have some time to kill and want to upgrade your internal knowledge bank, the Digital Public Library of America is a great place to start. It has over 2.5 million items from libraries, archives, and museums, and unless you happen to be Ben Stein, it's nigh impossible to spend a few minutes clicking through articles without emerging at least slightly more knowledgeable than when you started.

The Useless Web

You don’t know what you’re missing

The Internet is composed of around 4 billion webpages. How many of them are quirky? We're not sure, but The Useless Web will take you to a new one each time you click. You might see a dog licking your LCD screen or Oprah Winfrey seemingly unleashing a horde of bees on a studio audience. They may be useless sites, but they're also amusing.

Drinkify

Make a libation to match the mood

It's Wednesday night and your friends don't want to go out until the weekend, so you purchase a new digital album from Amazon and settle for an evening of _____ (insert your favorite artist or band here). Now all you need is a stiff drink, but what goes best with _____? It even has a Cats and Racks category.

Cute Roulette

Also known as "click and squee," this site shows you one cute thing after another in a never-ending slide show of redonkulessness.

Love Meow

This site chronicles the heartwarming stories of shelter cats, rescues, and special-needs kittens and cats. Then again, you can't judge a book by its cover, and apparently we can't tell the difference between a crappy abode and one that costs millions of dollars. Can you? Give it a whirl the next time you're bored.

I Waste So Much Time

Comic junk food

The Internet's always good for a laugh, and unless your funny bone is broken, you'll find plenty of them on I Waste So Much Time. The premise is simple: You look, you laugh (or don't), and then rate the pictures and videos (optional). When you've killed enough time, you can go on with your daily routine, only in a better mood.

Funny Typos

Helarious

If their’s one thing Maximum PC readers like too do, it's play games. But you know what? You're not alone. Far from it, in fact, as Awkward Family Photos proves. Spend a few minutes flipping through pages of pictures of other odd families and you'll come away convinced you're more normal than you thought.

The Most Awkwardly Public Break Ups in Facebook History

The name says it all

Let’s face it, breaking up with someone or being broken up with isn’t always easy. It’s especially bad when it’s done on social media, before family and friends. The Most Awkwardly Public Break Ups in Facebook History captures many of these moments, and they’re often hilarious to read.

Feed The Head

A site for surrealists

One of the stranger sites on the web, Feed The Head is deceptively engaging. Getting the head to breathe fire is rather easy, but can you grow a beard? There's a lot to discover here, and when you've exhausted all you can do, click the link in the upper-left corner for similar time wasters.

Literally Unbelievable

People who don’t get parody

Everybody knows that Onion stories are satirical… well, almost everybody. Literally Unbelievable archives instances on social media where people take Onion stories to be true. You’ll laugh and then subsequently cry over how dumb people can be.

Epic Rap Battles of History

Rhymes about the way it was

Who was the better inventor: Thomas Edison or Nikola Tesla? Who's the bigger brainiac: Stephen Hawking or Albert Einstein? Such questions can only be legitimately answered through Epic Rap Battles of History, which has a bunch of nerdy white guys dressing up as history’s most famous figures and duking it out with surprisingly clever rhymes.

F My Life

OK, maybe it’s not so bad

We’re all stuck in a rut at points, but if you can’t laugh at yourself when you’re down, who can you laugh at? That’s the thinking behind this website, which collects the most entertaining FML moments on social media. The site will have you crying at the misfortune of others, but it won’t be because you’re sad.

Best of Craigslist

Classifieds can be comedy gold

Craigslist can be a great tool when you’re trying to sell your used goods or buy items on the cheap, but browsing some of the listings can also be highly entertaining. But it's the niche sub-communities ("subreddits") that keep us coming back. Here are some faves.

Tech Support MacGyver

Users encounter tricky situations and use minimal resources to resolve them in creative ways, just like the hero of the '80s TV show that the subreddit is named after.

Bad Taxidermy

Comical mishaps can occur when attempting to preserve an animal after death in order to keep it on the mantel or as a conversation piece.

Perfect Loops

This community collects mesmerizing or delightfully silly animated gifs that are designed to loop seamlessly, forever.

Food Porn

It's safe for work, but these crisp, hi-res images of delicious-looking meals are not safe for an empty stomach.

Idiots Fighting Things

Lift your spirits with short clips of people running into screen doors or getting hit in the junk.

Brotips

Man up

Being a man isn’t always easy. Luckily, there’s to help you along the way. The site offers over 3,000 pieces of advice that encompass dating tips, philosophical anecdotes, and more. And while it’s mostly proverbs for men, there are some pearls of wisdom for women, as well.

Net for Beginners

Even old hands will learn something new

While Net for Beginners is a great website to help introduce your grandma to the Internet, it also explains the origins of many Internet tropes that power users take for granted. For instance, did you know that the word “meme” is derived from the Greek word “mimema,” which means “something imitated?” The site houses many more of these interesting Internet factoids.

Google Web History

Your every move recorded

It's no surprise that Google keeps a record of every interaction you make with its services, but when you look at Google Web History, that fact becomes eerily clear, right down to your personal trends and charted activities. If that's too spooky for you, the site also gives you the option to delete all this data.

BT London

320 billion pixels of panorama

It’s not about the megapixels, my friend. Today, gigapixels call the shots, and the current record is held by this 320-gigapixel—or 320-billion-pixel—panorama of London. The shot was stitched together from 48,460 frames shot above London using four Canon EOS 7Ds and 400mm lenses. The panorama lets you zoom in with incredible detail to examine the city’s very nooks and crannies.

Las Vegas Cams

Your vicarious Vegas wedding

Nothing says happily ever after like driving to Las Vegas and getting hitched—by an Elvis impersonator. Having it broadcast to the world over the Internet only cements the union, right? You get to bear witness to such matrimonial hijinks from the front-row seat of your computer screen.

Visual.Ly

Infographics ‘R’ Us

In this juiced-up, multitasking world, where there’s barely time to read the CliffsNotes or even a Wikipedia entry, you can just mainline your data through Visual.Ly’s infographics. Follow the rise and fall of the Wu-Tang Clan, for example, or learn how the Starfleet delta shield evolved. You’ll be amazed at what you can learn through pictures.

Internet Map

Whose is bigger?

Does Yahoo own a bigger piece of the Internet than Google? OK, the answer to that is pretty obvious. But you might be surprised by the size relationship between Google and, say,, or any of the other 350,000 top websites represented by the Internet Map. You can easily lose yourself scrolling through this data-driven universe of planetoid-shaped objects.

Pica-Pic

Handheld gaming

Every once in a while, a website comes around and reminds you how awesome the Internet is. Pica-Pic is one of those sites. It's like a time machine, taking you back through all those retro handheld games you grew up playing. Quite frankly, we're surprised Nintendo and other game publishers haven't sued this site off the web. Just in case the end is nigh, enjoy it while you can!

5-Second Films

The tiniest of time wasters

OK, many of these short films are actually a little longer than five seconds, but not by much. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself spending many minutes on this site, just seeing how each of these brief-but-humorous sketches plays out.

The marketplace of ideas

You’ve heard about Kickstarter and its ilk, but you’ve probably never heard of—an online store devoted to the sale of successfully crowdfunded products. Even if you’re not in the market for a bra that holds a smartphone or a vehicle called a “scrooser,” it’s fun to see the fruits of modern invention and entrepreneurialism.

Where Cool Things Happen

Photos that will wow you

It’s hard not to get sucked into this photo blog, which chronicles interesting places and events from around the world. From mass animal gatherings to 3D latte art to buildings inside caves, you’re sure to find something here that amazes you.

Click the next page for sun websites that allow you to have fun with audio!

Fun with Audio

With an emphasis on sounds, these sites are no less entertaining than their visually oriented brethren.

Fun Switcher

Just click a switch and be treated to an accompanying sound clip. The real fun is in mixing different sounds. Gangnam Style and Skeletor laughing? It's strangely mesmerizing!

Gordon Mah Ung Soundboard

You don’t have to wait for our biweekly No BS Podcast to hear Deputy Editor Gordon Mah Ung go off on Apple, Ewoks, and other random things that piss him off.

Museum of Endangered Sounds

You’re sure to feel a touch of nostalgia when you visit this site, which pays tribute to the long-forgotten sounds of old technologies. Think: dial-up Internet, rotary phones, and the Windows 95 startup, to name a few.

Letters of Note

In the words of famous people

What do the philosopher Seneca, former president John F. Kennedy, and music producer Steve Albini have in common? You can find letters that they actually wrote reprinted on this site, which provides an archive of personal and professional correspondences of public figures.

White Whine

First-world problems indeed!

An appalling, but also extremely entertaining, glimpse into the psyche of the terminally self-centered. You’ll find random bitching about Starbucks orders, out-of-stock iPhones, and the indignities of flying coach, among other complaints of the entitled, gathered from around the web.

Impact: Earth!

Fun with science

This site created by Purdue University lets you set specific parameters to calculate the impact of a given object being hurtled toward Earth. It might not change your life to know that pigs sleep on their right side, for instance, but this site will give you plenty of conversation fodder.

Don’t Even Reply

Take the bait, if you dare

This site reads like the private diary of a professional online troll, and it's effing hilarious. By harmlessly answering ads on Craigslist with unbelievable but earnest-sounding replies, this gentleman truly elevates the act of messing with people to an art form. We know it's kind of messed up, but it's still a hoot.

Free Rice

Use your smarts to feed people

We all want to help solve world hunger, and we'd love to do it from our computer. Free Rice lets us. Visitors are presented with simple quizzes that when answered correctly display ads, which pay for rice for impoverished nations. One guy ain't so happy with the company, though: Linus Torvalds. His lack of love revolves around Nvidia's continued reluctance to show the love to the Linux operating system -- and Linus isn't afraid to express his displeasure, either with words or obscene gestures.

"Nvidia has been the single worst company we've dealt with," Linus says in the brief clip below, which is taken from a much longer talk at the Aalto Center for Entrepreneurship (ACE) in Otaniemi, Finland. (Hit this link to see the whole, interesting thing.) The Chinese Ministry of Culture needs to clear a title before it becomes available in stores, a process that's been known to take months, or even years. As a result, impatient Chinese gamers looking to engage in demonic hack n' slashing have resorted to pineapples, phonics and search trickery to get their hands on the much-coveted game.

Since Diablo III has yet to be approved, PC World and Kotaku are reporting that searches for the translated Diablo III name turns up fruitless on the eBay-like Taobao. Enterprising online retailers, however, are selling the game under the name "Big Pineapple 3" -- because "Big Pineapple" in Chinese is "dà bōluó". See what they did there? The listings for the game even include pics of a pineapple, in case verbal punnery isn't your strong point.

Of course, since this is being fairly widely reported, the creative backdoor probably won't stay propped open for long. But the people who did manage to snag a copy are in for some good news; yesterday, Blizzard outlined some massive Diablo III patches coming down the pipeline. PC Gamer has a great summary of the scheduled changes.

Follow Brad on Google+ or Twitter
china diablo diablo 3 funny Gaming PC gaming News Tue, 29 May 2012 18:12:44 +0000 Brad Chacos 23453 at HP Introduces "Sleekbooks:" Ultrabooks That Aren't Ultrabooks
In between ringing the warning bells about cyberspace boogeymen and rolling out refreshes to the Pavilion lineup, HP also took the time to answer a question we all knew was coming someday: when is an Ultrabook not an Ultrabook? The answer: when it's a so-called thin-and-light Sleekbook. Two new HP Envy notebooks carry the new name, which skirt the restrictions associated with the Intel-owned Ultrabook brand.

A key distinction for Ultrabooks, of course, is that they have to be powered by Intel's Core processors. One of the two Envy Sleekbooks -- a 14-inch, $700 laptop -- in fact runs on Ivy Bridge, but the second model -- a 15.6-inch, $600 laptop -- sports an AMD APU, something that could never occur in an Ultrabook proper.

The two Envy Sleekbooks also point out the price-based competitiveness of AMD's processors. The APU-powered Envy sports a bigger screen and "discrete-class graphics" while costing $100 less than the smaller Intel-powered Envy, which HP offers with "optional discrete graphics" that will only add to the price tag.

The Intel model should be available today, while the AMD variant won't be shipping until around June 20th. Why could that be? *Cough* Trinity *Cough* A couple of actual Ultrabooks were announced, too.

So whaddaya think: if HP and other manufacturers can whip together thin and long-lasting Ultrabook-like notebooks running on AMD processors, then simply call the doppelgangers by a slightly different name, does "Ultrabook" (with its very loose spec guidelines) even carry much value as a brand? The AMD Sleekbook is virtually identical to an AMD Ultrabook, after all, aside from the CPU at its heart.
funny Hardware hp laptop notebook sleekbook ultrabook News Wed, 09 May 2012 17:26:41 +0000 Brad Chacos 23293 at Anonymous Supporters Duped Into Downloading Zeus Trojan
What better way to start the work week than with a delicious slice of irony pie? The hacktivist group known as Anonymous spent the past year harassing websites and web users alike with a series of high profile attacks. Authorities responded by arresting Anons around the world, but new information shows that police weren't the only ones spanking Anonymous. Symantec says that an enterprising bot herder modified a link to one of Anon's voluntary DDoS tools to point to a file infected with the Zeus Trojan instead.

The link switcher altered the URL in a widespread Anon PasteBin guide on January 20th -- the day of Anonymous' self-proclaimed "biggest attack ever," in which they took down a host of government and industry websites in response to Megaupload's shuttering. The guide originally pointed to the Slowloris DoS tool. The modified guide pointed to the Zeus Trojan. Symantec reports the PasteBin guide with the malicious link was viewed over 26,000 times and tweeted by the YourAnonNews account and 400 others.

After being installed, the Zeus app downloads the Slowloris tool and actually participates in Anon's DDoS attacks in order to avoid being detected. Of course, while Slowloris is busy blasting websites, the Zeus app is busy sending cookies and financial login information to its master server.

"Not only will supporters be breaking the law by participating in DoS attacks on Anonymous hacktivism targets, but may also be at risk of having their online banking and email credentials stolen," Symantec says in conclusion. Now it's Apple's turn. After a Chinese court ruled that Apple has no right to use the "iPad" name in mainland China because a company called Proview Technology (Shenzhen) holds the trademark, Proview announced they were suing Apple for $1.6 billion in damages. Now, Proview wants a complete iPad import/export ban -- and since all iPads are manufactured in China, an export ban could choke off worldwide supply for the mega-popular tablet.

Yesterday, the Verge reported that government officials began confiscating iPads from stores in Shijiazhuang, the capital of the Heibei province. Today, Proview told the Associated Press that it is seeking similar actions in 30 additional cities, as well as the aforementioned ban on exports and imports.

"We are now working on a request to China Customs to ban and seize all the import and export of the iPad products that have violated the trademark," said Xie Xianghui, a lawyer for the company.

Funnily enough, the MPAA/RIAA's plight against overseas pirates is helping Proview try to strangle to iPad sales. The laws that allow Proview to ask for the iPad ban were originally enacted to stop Chinese counterfeiters from shipping trademark-infringing items to other countries. Of course, since Apple is sitting on $97.6 billion in cold, hard cash, we're guessing the company would just peel off a few bills for Proview before it let the supply of iPads grind to a halt.

Still, we have to ask: now that you've had a taste, does your litigious medicine taste bitter, Apple?

(For more information about the complicated trademark battle between Apple and Proview, read our coverage of the Chinese judge's ruling back in December.)

apple china funny oops tablet trademark trademark infringement News Tue, 14 Feb 2012 18:06:48 +0000 Brad Chacos 22683 at Google TV Unveils Big Surprise Announcement
It began with a simple posting on Google TV's Facebook page late Saturday night: "Get ready for Monday, we have some big announcements!" Maybe a TV version of Google Nexus? Some other type of new hardware? A software update? Nope. That's it.

And that's why you shouldn't get pumped for vague PR announcements. In any case, Google claims the updated YouTube app is faster and smoother than ever before, and a new Discovery feature allows you to browse YouTube videos by category. Changes to the channel interface make subscribing and finding videos related to the ones you watch easier, too.

All in all, it seems like a solid -- if unspectacular -- update to the YouTube app. But someone at Google should tone down the hype machine (especially on news-light weekends).
announcement app funny Google TV surprises update youtube News Mon, 13 Feb 2012 18:48:39 +0000 Brad Chacos 22663 at Need Natural GPU Performance Enhancement? style="float: right;" />Want to avoid getting mugged? Buy an Android phone – or even better yet, a Blackberry. No, they don’t have any crazy criminal-prevention apps or burglar whistles built in; thieves just don’t want them. Or at least one pair of thieves in Manhattan don’t want them. Apparently, two robbers have been accosting Columbia University students for their iPhones. No other phone will do! The crooks even let one victim keep a perfectly good Droid, police say.

The robbers still snatched the poor Droid owner’s cash, the local NBC station reports, but at least he could call the cops on his black sheep phone afterwards. A second victim was thrown against a fence and searched after she said she didn’t have an Apple handset, while a third separate victim had actually had an iPhone and was left unharmed after turning it over.

The NBC team asked Columbia students what they thought of the snobbery robberies. “It's insulting they don't want my BlackBerry,” one student responded, while another said that frankly, she didn’t like her BlackBerry either and was pocketing her pennies to buy an iPhone herself.

android Crime funny iphone stolen News Thu, 15 Dec 2011 19:23:25 +0000 Brad Chacos 21807 at IP Addresses From Sony, Fox And Universal Found Torrenting Music, Movies And More
This just in from the “Isn’t it ironic?” department: IP addresses from some of the top content creation companies, including Fox, Sony and Universal, have been caught red-handed downloading torrents of movies, music and TV shows. That’s the claim from TorrentFreak, at least, who sifted through data from YouHaveDownloaded, a Russian site that logs – and exposes! – IP addresses downloading many of the public torrents you can find out there. TorrentFreak did some digging and managed to match several infringing IP addresses to IP addresses registered to the aforementioned companies.

A Sony IP address from Culver City, CA and an NBC Universal IP address from Fort Lauderdale, FL went on especially naughty sprees, downloading several different torrents apiece, including a Halloween trance album, a Black Keys track, the complete first season of “The Game of Thrones,” the “Cowboys and Aliens” movie and more. An IP address registered to Fox was also found downloading “Super 8.”

An IP address from Google’s NY office also downloaded a ton of stuff, although interestingly enough, TorrentFreak notes that they couldn’t find any torrents being downloaded from BitTorrent Inc’s SF headquarters. Then again, YouHaveDownloaded only claims to track around a fifth of all available public torrents. (By the way, YouHave Downloaded’s owners say they’re exposing the IP addresses of anyone who downloads from the torrents they’re tracking in order to dispel the notion that you should expect privacy on the ‘Net.)

TorrentFreak also notes that an IP address from a Dutch music royalty collecting agency called Buma/Stemra was found downloading Battlefield 3 and episodes of “Entourage,” which prompted the company to claim that its address was spoofed. TorrentFreak invites the US companies mentioned above to do the same thing. “After all, if it’s so easy to spoof an IP-address, then accused file-sharers can use this same defense against copyright holders.”

Thoughts?

download funny IP address NBC Universal oops sony torrent torrents News Tue, 13 Dec 2011 19:27:08 +0000 Brad Chacos 21763 at Microsoft Contest Offers Free Windows Phones To Talkative Android Malware Victims
Everywhere you turn these days, it seems as though the headlines are filled with horror stories of Android phones riddled with malware. Even apps you snag on Android Market can infect your phone (although those are rare and often quickly removed). Microsoft has been paying attention to the news and decided to kick Google where it hurts with a new social media campaign. Have you been bitten by some Android malware and want to switch to (possibly) greener pastures? If you share your sob story on Twitter, Microsoft might just send you a shiny new Windows Phone as a technological band-aid.

Microsoft “PC Evangelist” Ben Rudolph kicked off the …unorthodox marketing campaign with the tweet you see above. Plenty of people are sharing their #droidrage stories, though the hashtag is also being flooded by sarcastic/pissed off Android lovers and folks who think the marketing campaign is a low blow by Microsoft. What do you think: is #droidrage underhand or brilliant? (Personally, I think it’s funny.)

And hey, if you want to try and get one of those five Windows Phones that are being given away, Rudolph just tweeted that he’s still taking sob story submissions for a few more hours.
android contest funny malware microsoft mobile smartphone twitter News Tue, 13 Dec 2011 18:01:52 +0000 Brad Chacos 21759 at Do Your Folks A Favor On "Update Your Parents' Browser Day"
If you’re a Maximum PC reader, there’s a good chance that you’re the computer geek that relatives call when they get infected with a nasty piece of malware. But lying in the center of all that sarcasm was a glistening gold nugget of a great idea, and other big names quickly took up the call to arms. Google’s search guru Matt Cutts tweeted a reminder in the midst of feasting yesterday, and Microsoft’s IE blog created a list of the top ten times to update your parents’ browser (Number one being: “When they’re distracted by grilling you about when you’re going to get a real job, when you’re going to settle down, and when you’re going to give them grandchildren. “) We’re just going to say you should do it to save yourself some future headaches.

Madrigal offered up some tips in his original post: “Don't switch brands on them. No putting Chrome instead of Firefox or Internet Explorer. Keep it simple.” Sounds good to us. So what are you waiting for?
