War on Korean Peninsula Could Have "Catastrophic" Consequences to Electronics Market

Korea is a major supplier of electronics parts.

Analysts at IHS iSuppli spent some time pondering what would happen if current tensions in Korea escalate to the point of a war on the Korean peninsula, and what they determined is that it could theoretically cripple the global electronics business. South Korea is a major cog in the electronics supply chain, as it accounts for half of the world's DRAM output, two-thirds of NAND flash manufacturing, and 70 percent of the world's tablet display.

AMD Cuts Desktop Processor Pricing Up to 19 Percent

In with the new, and in with price cuts too!

AMD recently launched a pair of FX-Series Piledriver processors, FX-4350 and FX-6350, and hot on heels of those new chips is a round of price cuts to some older parts. The Sunnyvale chip designer slashed the price of 10 chips in all, most of which received a double-digit percentage discount. In fact, the smallest price cut was 9.5 percent, and the two others that technically don't qualify as double digits were both dropped by 9.9 percent.

Go ahead Joan Jett fans, touch Lenovo's new ThinkPad S431. Lenovo's latest business friendly laptop sports a 14-inch touchscreen display wedged into a 13-inch frame and encourages finger tapping and swiping with Windows 8. According to Lenovo, it's also dressed to impress customers with an "elegant floating design," offering users a combination of style and substance.

Ultrabook vendors are not the only ones eagerly looking forward to Intel’s 22nm Haswell chip, scheduled to launch at Computex 2013 in June, as Chromebooks powered by Intel’s next-generation chip are also in the cards.

Looking at the future of CPU sockets

The Mainstream tech media declared the PC dead—yet again—and enthusiasts had a full-on freak-out when rumors surfaced thatIntel intended to dump socketed processors within two years. You can read the details of the story here, but let it be known far and wide, Intel will support socketed processors for the “foreseeable future.” AMD, likewise, had already taken the pledge, saying it would be offering socketed CPUs, too.

Honoring 20 years of the World Wide Web by looking forward at the future of broadband Internet

Broadband has evolved considerably over the last decade or so in the United States. Whereas just a few years ago, large parts of the country were relegated to pokey 56K dial-up connections over standard phone lines, now multi-megabit broadband connections are commonplace and speed increases are being introduced regularly. In fact, in some test markets, broadband at gigabit speeds is on the way. And yes, that’s gigabits with a “G,” as in roughly 17,800x more bandwidth than 56K dial-up.

Acer May Launch a $399 Touchscreen Notebook Next Month

Talk is cheap, and soon so will be touch.

If Windows 8 is here to stay -- and Microsoft hasn't given us any reason to believe it plans on backpeddaling at this point -- then you might be best served by investing in a touchscreen laptop the next time you're in the market for a notebook. Touchscreens aren't always cheap, but it looks like Acer is planning to aggressively pursue the entry-level market with an 11.6-inch touchscreen laptop that costs just $399.

Getac's Gnarly X500 Mobile Rugged Server Looks Badass

If there's such thing as an anti-Ultrabook, this is it.

Pardon the crude visual, but we have a hunch Getac's X500 Rugged Server carries around a spare Ultrabook in its bag just in case the restroom runs out of toilet paper. Technically it's a mobile system in that it resembles a laptop form factor, but it's a also a beastly looking rig. Of course it's not intended for mere mortals who spend the day looking over expense reports, but we'd still love to whip one of these out at a board meeting and let it crash down on the table with a thud.
