It's about an antagonist with a "hatred for humanity" who wanders the outskirts of New York seeking out innocent victims. Or simply put, "Yes, it's a game about killing people" for no other reason than the main character's "deep-rooted hatred" of, well, everything and everyone. Or of himself. Whatever -- the subject matter prompted Valve's Doug Lombardi to yank the title from Steam Greenlight yesterday, only to have his decision vetoed today by Gabe Newell.

"Based on what we've seen on Greenlight we would not publish Hatred on Steam," Lombardi explained to Destructive Creations as the reason why it was pulled. His decision sparked a debate and a bit of controversy in and of itself, especially since at the time it had over 13,000 "yes" votes, moving it to the number seven spot on the Greenlight list.

A day later, Newell reversed the decision after he did a bit of investigating.

"Yesterday I heard that we were taking Hatred down from Greenlight. Since I wasn't up to speed, I asked around internally to find out why we had done that. It turns out that it wasn't a good decision, and we'll be putting Hatred back up. My apologies to you and your team. Steam is about creating tools for content creators and customers," Newell said.

All the publicity from the controversy has no doubt helped Hatred ascend to the number one spot after being brought back to the Greenlight. That doesn't necessarily mean it will make it to Steam, though it's hard to picture any other scenario at this point.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/gabe_newell_vetoes_valves_decision_remove_hatred_steam_greenlight_2014#comments doug lombardi Gabe Newell games hatred steam greenlight stream Valve News Wed, 17 Dec 2014 19:38:18 +0000 Paul Lilly 29109 at http://www.maximumpc.com Nvidia Releases GeForce 347.09 Beta Driver http://www.maximumpc.com/nvidia_releases_geforce_34709_beta_driver_2014
For best performance in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

Standard warning always applies to pre-release software and drivers -- if you'e running a mission critical rig or otherwise need to minimize the risk of buggy behavior, then stay away. Since then, SSDs have continued to trickle downwards in price, though at a much slower pace. Nevertheless, with costs still trending downward, laptop vendors are expected to offer more business-class laptops with both SSD and HDD storage options inside.

According to Digitimes, the proportion of hybrid business-use notebooks -- laptops equipped with an SSD for the OS and HDD for storage -- currently sits at around 10 percent, though looking ahead to next year, those in the notebook supply chain say they expect that number to double to 20 percent.

This is based on the expectation that the price for a 128GB SSD will drop to $60 in the first quarter of 2015, which would be equal to the cost of a 1TB HDD, Digitimes says. So what's likely to happen is there will be a bunch of business notebooks that pair a 128GB SDD with a 500GB HDD.

Why the prominence in business-class laptops? These tend to be more expensive than consumer notebooks, which makes it easier to squeeze in upgrades like this. We expect to see a bunch of wearable devices at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next month, especially since we're already seeing a handful of products hit the web ahead of the convention. If the site's information proves accurate, Lite-On's first consumer SSD will be called Zeta. It will use Hynix 16nm MLC flash memory and come in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB capacities. All three will offer up to 520MB/s read transfers, while write speeds will be rated at up to 150MB/s for the 128GB model, 290MB/s for the 256GB model, and 430MB/s for the 512MB model.

Lite-On isn't going after the speed crown obviously, and instead is focusing on price. It would muck with how the file system tracks deletes, causing the installer to think the temp files failed to extract correctly.

There was a workaround for the problem, though now the easiest solution is to apply the new hotfix that's now available through Windows Update, according to Microsoft's Gabriel Aul.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/microsoft_issues_hotfix_windows_10_update_issue_12_percent_users_rejoice_2014#comments hotfix microsoft operating system OS patch Security Software windows 10 News Tue, 16 Dec 2014 16:27:49 +0000 Paul Lilly 29098 at http://www.maximumpc.com Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition Receives Steamworks Update http://www.maximumpc.com/dark_souls_prepare_die_edition_receives_steamworks_update_2014
Praise the sun!

Mention Games for Windows Live to a PC gamer and chances are that they are going to cringe. Microsoft’s online gaming service has caused many issues for the games it has been attached to and, upon the news that Microsoft would do away with it, some publishers have been making the effort to remove GFWL from their games. Today, From Software announced a new update for Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition that replaces GFWL with Steamworks and joins other developers who have made the transition.

The update will allow players to transfer their save data and achievements from GFWL over to Steamworks between now and February 16, 2015. Afterwards, the developer warns players that the new version of the game, using Steamworks, will become the default version and all save data and achievements will be lost if they haven’t been transferred. Once the game has been updated, gamers will no longer need to login to a second platform in order to play Dark Souls.

Unfortunately, there have been issues being experience by some players who have mods, such as DSfix, installed. However, in the case of DSfix, there is a new version of the mod available that should hopefully address these issues. As for other mods, that are causing problems, players might have to completely remove them for now.

The update has been a long time coming ever since it appeared that Microsoft would no longer support GFWL when a support update on Xbox.com stated, “Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014.” However, the message was removed and, in June of this year, the company stated that it will continue to support the service.

For those who need to save their information, From Software has posted instructions on how to transfer the game’s data to Steamworks for both digital and physical copies of the game.

Follow Sean on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/dark_souls_prepare_die_edition_receives_steamworks_update_2014#comments dark souls Dark Souls prepare to die edition from software games for windows live GFWL Steamworks Gaming News Tue, 16 Dec 2014 02:02:47 +0000 Sean D Knight 29096 at http://www.maximumpc.com Xbox App Pops Up in Leaked Windows 10 Build http://www.maximumpc.com/xbox_app_pops_leaked_windows_10_build_2014
Yes console games, we can all get along

There are several interesting things taking place in the leaked Windows 10 build, the one that Microsoft is apparently super calm about making the rounds. One that we wanted to touch a bit more on is a new Xbox app. This is something that Microsoft is still working on, as the app clearly states when it's fired up, but the Redmond outfit is so excited about it that it wanted to give early users a sneak peek.

The folks over at The Verge have been playing around with Xbox app. They say it appears to act as a gateway into the entire Xbox ecosystem -- you'll have access to achievements, your friends list, activity feeds, and the Store. And since it's an extremely early version, there's speculation that the final release might include SmartGlass integration as well.

As our sister site PC Gamer points out, there's a chance this could be what Microsoft's Phil Spencer was referring to a week ago when he said it was "time for us to talk about gaming on Windows." We're crossing our fingers that Spencer was hinting at something more than an Xbox app -- as cool as that is, accessing our Xbox achievements on our Windows rigs isn't exactly game changing.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/xbox_app_pops_leaked_windows_10_build_2014#comments app Gaming microsoft operating system OS Software Windows windows 10 xbox News Mon, 15 Dec 2014 19:30:13 +0000 Paul Lilly 29095 at http://www.maximumpc.com Cicret Braclet Turns Your Arm into a Touchscreen Display http://www.maximumpc.com/cicret_braclet_turns_your_arm_touchscreen_display_2014
Nice forearm, what's the resolution?

The wearable category has opened the door to several interesting product ideas, one of which is a bracelet that turns your arm into a touchscreen. Say what? It's called the Cicret Bracelet (pronounced "Secret") and it's currently in development, though you won't find it hanging out on any crowdfunding sites. Instead, the developers are seeking donations on their own in hopes of raising 700,000 euros to finish the first prototype.

It's an interesting design that makes use of a picoprojector and various proximity sensors, the latter of which pick up your gesture actions and commands. Just like a glass touchscreen, you can tap your forearm and perform touch functions, even when it's wet (taking a bath, for instance).

Supposedly the device can do anything a phone or tablet can do, Daily Mail reports. That includes things like read emails, hop around the web, play games, watch videos, make calls, and more.

It's being built to sync with an iPhone, though it can also function as a standalone device. Should the project come to fruition, it will cost around $475 and come in 16GB and 32GB models in choice of 10 colors.

Check it out.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/cicret_braclet_turns_your_arm_touchscreen_display_2014#comments bracelet cicret technology touchscreen wearables News Mon, 15 Dec 2014 18:51:16 +0000 Paul Lilly 29093 at http://www.maximumpc.com Skype Will Begin Translating Your Speech Today http://www.maximumpc.com/skype_will_begin_translating_your_speech_today_2014
¿Cómo estás?

Voice over IP communication is entering a new era, one that will hopefully help break down language barriers. Or so that's the plan. Using innovations from Microsoft Research, the first phase of the Skype Translator preview program is kicking off today with two spoken languages -- Spanish and English. It will also feature over 40 instant messaging languages for Skype customers who have signed up via the Skype Translator sign-up page and are using Windows 8.1.

It also works on preview copies of Windows 10. What it does is translate voice input from someone speaking English or Spanish into text or voice. The technology relies on machine learning, so the more it gets used, the better it will be at translating audio and text.

"This is just the beginning of a journey that will transform the way we communicate with people around the world. Our long-term goal for speech translation is to translate as many languages as possible on as many platforms as possible and deliver the best Skype Translator experience on each individual platform for our more than 300 million connected users," Skype stated in a blog post.

Translations occur in "near real-time," Microsoft says. In addition, there's an on-screen transcript of your call. Given the many nuances of various languages and the pace at which communication changes, this is a pretty remarkable feat that Microsoft's attempting to pull off. There's ton of upside as well, from the business world to use in classrooms.

If you want to test it out yourself -- and Microsoft hopes you do, as it's looking for feedback at this early stage -- you can register for the program by going here.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/skype_will_begin_translating_your_speech_today_2014#comments microsoft Skype Software Translation VOIP News Mon, 15 Dec 2014 17:57:41 +0000 Paul Lilly 29092 at http://www.maximumpc.com
