Patience and a steady hand are needed to gut an electronic device without leaving a wake of broken parts, but like anything else, having the right tools makes a world of difference. We're not talking about hammers and duct tape -- essentials for DIY repair of another kind -- but plastic and metal spudgers. You'll find both plus a whole lot more in iFixIt's Refurbisher's Toolkit.

It's a bit pricey for the casual hobbyist at $100, but if you're the go-to guy or gal in your neighborhood for repairing electronics, there are several tools in the kit that could make your life a bit easier. For example, there's an Xbox Opening Tool specifically designed to crack open the plastic case on the original Xbox 360. It's not a necessary part to get at the guts of Microsoft's previous generation console, but it should save you time from having to pry each of the clips holding the case together.

The kit also includes ESD tweezers, a dust blower, anti-static wrist strap, 26-bit driver kit, surface detailing block, German detailing eraser with bruse, pencil sharpener, small ESD safe brush, large ESD safe brush, 1/4-inch driver handle (Philips #2, flathead 6mm, game bit 4.5mm, game bit 3.8mm), and a custom carrying case.

We haven't sampled a Refurbisher's Toolkit so there's no hands-on experience from our end to relay, though we have used iFixIt's collection of spudgers, which do indeed come in handy for prying open things like smartphones and tablets.

You can find more information and/or order a Refurbisher's Toolkit on iFixIt's website.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/ifixit_announces_100_refurbishers_toolkit_diy_gadget_repair#comments DIY electronics ifixit refurbisher's toolkit repair tools News Tue, 15 Apr 2014 14:26:10 +0000 Paul Lilly 27639 at http://www.maximumpc.com Staples Plans to Close 225 U.S. Stores by 2015 http://www.maximumpc.com/staples_plans_close_225_us_stores_2015
Another electronics chain decides to shut down some stores to save costs

Staples recently announced that it's going to close down 225 of its retail stores across the United States by the end of next year. The closures are intended to cust costs as Staples attempts to give itself a makeover. It's also in response to a growing number of products being sold on the company's website -- Staples ended 2013 with over 500,000 products on Staples.com versus 100,000 at the beginning of the year.

"A year ago, we announced a plan to fundamentally reinvent our company," said Ron Sargent, Staples’ chairman and chief executive officer. "With nearly half of our sales generated online today, we’re meeting the changing needs of business customers and taking aggressive action to reduce costs and improve efficiency."

Shutting down 225 stores is part of a overall cost-cutting program intended to save the company around $500 million. Staples currently has over 1,500 stores in the U.S., and over 2,200 around the world.

The announcement comes just days after RadioShack announced plans of its own to shutter 1,100 "underperforming" retail locations in the U.S., as it too tries to reinvent its image.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/staples_plans_close_225_us_stores_2015#comments electronics Hardware staples stores News Tue, 11 Mar 2014 18:42:34 +0000 Paul Lilly 27419 at http://www.maximumpc.com RadioShack is Closing Down 1,100 "Underperforming" Retail Locations in the U.S. http://www.maximumpc.com/radioshack_closing_down_1100_underperforming_retail_locations_us
Store closures are part of RadioShack's turnaround plan

If you're the nostalgic type, you may want to visit your neighborhood RadioShack store and savor the moment, it may be the last. That's because RadioShack is planning to close down 1,100 retail locations in the U.S. that are "underperforming," which will leave the electronics chain with 4,000 remaining stores stateside (including over 900 dealer franchise locations). Though that's a lot of store closures, RadioShack is confident it can turn things around.

RadioShack has a turnaround plan containing five pillars. They include repositioning the brand, revamping the product assortment, reinvigorating the stores, operational efficiency, and financial flexibility.

"Our brand equity remains strong, reflected in the sales growth we're seeing in our new Concept Stores which redefine the RadioShack store experience," said Joseph C. Magnacca, CEO of RadioShack. "We have also been encouraged by the positive response to our new brand positioning around 'Do It Together,' which we kicked off with our award winning Super Bowl commercial. Importantly, our key hires during the fourth quarter in merchandising, global sourcing, planning and allocation and, more recently, our new chief financial officer, round out our new leadership team as we continue to re-build the business."

RadioShack's total net sales and operating revenues for the fourth quarter of 2013 were $935.4 million, down from $1.17 billion a year prior. Store sales dropped 19 percent year-over-year, which the chain blamed on soft performance in the mobility business. This led to a net loss of $191.4 million, or $1.90 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $63.3 million in 2012.

For the entire year, RadioShack posted a loss of $400.2 million, or $3.92 per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $139.4 million in all of 2012.

"Without minimizing the challenges ahead, we have a detailed strategic path to profitability based upon the five pillars of our turnaround," Mr. Magnacca added. "Our entire team is focused on execution as we work to improve our performance in the coming year."

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/radioshack_closing_down_1100_underperforming_retail_locations_us#comments electronics Hardware radioshack retail stores News Tue, 04 Mar 2014 17:58:59 +0000 Paul Lilly 27383 at http://www.maximumpc.com Sony to Close 20 Retail Stores in the U.S. http://www.maximumpc.com/sony_close_20_retails_stores_us_2014
Big changes are in store for Sony as part of a restructuring effort

Sony this week announced plans to close down 20 retail stores scattered throughout the United States, which will leave the company with 11 stores in California, New York, Florida, and Texas. Fortunately,I’ve realized that I already use the most ecologically sound computing device available: the desktop tower PC.

It’s already been acknowledged by the industry that the upgrade cycle for the PC is very long and getting longer. My mother-in-law, for example, replaced her Dell tower desktop after nearly nine years of service. Nine years. In that time, I added a second hard drive
and a bit of RAM but it was essentially unchanged from its original Pentium 4 state. We could have upgraded its internals but she instead decided to replace it with a brushed-aluminum all-in-one.

Now, I like all-in-ones but they are at a key disadvantage when it comes to carbon footprint. You can’t upgrade them and usually when they go bust, the entire thing goes into landfill. The same can be said of the new generation of ultrathin notebooks. Often, the SSDs and RAM in these highly portable devices are soldered to the motherboard and the whole thing is then glued shut, so the only thing you can do when a part goes bad is landfi ll the entire unit. But I suppose they are still a far greener proposition than the tablet and smartphone movement.

Tablets have even worse serviceability than an ultrathin laptop, and they fall off the performance curve before you can unbox them. First-generation tablets from just two years ago are all but useless. If you don’t replace your smartphone every 12 months, you’re a loser or worse—not cool, the commercials say. It’s easy too, with your carrier “subsidizing” a new phone for you every year. Even if you don’t upgrade, the phone can’t take the latest OS, which means it’s riddled with security holes and won’t even install the latest apps. Let’s not forget the carbon footprint from sleeping in front of a store for five days to get the new thing.

And don’t fool yourself into thinking that putting your old smartphone into the eWaste bin at Best Buy is helping— it’s estimated that only 12.5 percent of eWaste is actually reclaimed.

Now, my desktop PC, I’m certain, will run the latest OS and it gets regular security updates. Even if I didn’t upgrade my tower PC, I’m certain I could run it for the next nine years without issue. When I do get the itch for a new component— say, a future AMD or Intel 13- watt processor that’s twice the speed of today’s fastest CPU—I can replace that one specific component (with motherboard, of course) and reuse the rest of the parts for years on end.

Sure, analysts and the mainstream tech media might say that long upgrade cycle is bad, but that’s because they want people to buy a new product every 12 months and throw away the old one. But I don’t care; I’m trying to save the world with my desktop tower PC.
http://www.maximumpc.com/i%E2%80%99m_going_green_2014#comments 2013 carbon footprint columns computer electronics green November issues 2013 pc phone Recycle tablet waste November 2013 Columns Thu, 23 Jan 2014 20:27:35 +0000 Gordon Mah Ung 27104 at http://www.maximumpc.com District Judge Rules in Favor of Warrantless Border Searchers http://www.maximumpc.com/district_judge_rules_favor_warrantless_border_searchers2014
Heads up, travelers

Today marks the first day of a brand new year, but if you have plans of traveling abroad, be advised that the same old laws apply. That includes the government's right to search and seize your electronic devices without a warrant. The controversial law comes up in headlines every once in a while, and is again making the rounds after a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit challenging the policy.

According to a report in The New York Times, Judge Edward R. Korman of the Federal District Court of the Eastern District of New York ruled that plaintiffs lacked legal backing for their lawsuit because border searches happen so rarely that "there is not a substantial risk that their electronic devices will be subject to a search or seizure without reasonable suspicion."

It doesn't stop there. Judge Korman said that if even the plaintiffs did have legal standing for their lawsuit, they'd still lose because the U.S. government does not need reasonable suspicion to search or confiscate a traveler's mobile phone, notebook, or any other device at the border.

"There's no silver lining to this decision," Catherine Crump, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union representing the plaintiffs, said in a statement. "It's not just that we lost the case, it's that the judge decided against us on multiple alternative grounds."

Pascal Abidor, a graduate student in Islamic studies, first filed the lawsuit back in 2010 after U.S. border agents escorted him in handcuffs off an Amtrak train crossing from Canada to New York. He was held in a cell and questioned for several hours, and his laptop detained for 11 days.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/district_judge_rules_favor_warrantless_border_searchers2014#comments border searches electronics law legal Privacy Security News Wed, 01 Jan 2014 16:26:59 +0000 Paul Lilly 26981 at http://www.maximumpc.com Cyber Monday Ads 2013 Round Up http://www.maximumpc.com/cyber_monday_ads_2013_round
UPDATE: Cyber Monday 2013 PC/Accessories Deals

Black Friday is now in the rear view mirror, which means we can look forward to a line up Cyber Monday deals. One word of note before we switch gears -- even though Black Friday is over with, many of the deals listed will last through the weekend. We'll do our best to cross out the ones we know have already expired, but if you see something that catches your eye, it doesn't hurt to click.

These are the deals you are looking for!

Just as we did last year, we're putting together a dynamic collection of PC-related parts, accessories, and games deals all organized into handy categories. All you have to do is browse the categorized deals and click on any that interest you. That sure beats the alternative, doesn't it?

Here's how this works. If you see "(BF") next to an item, it's a Black Friday deal, though as previously mentioned, some of these run throughout the weekend, so be click-shy. We'll cross out the ones that we know have expired. Likewise, all Cyber Monday deals will have a "(CM)" next to it so you can easily distinguish between the two.

The other thing to note is that we're not big on mail-in-rebates, so if a Cyber Monday discount is mostly represented by having to jump through an MIR hoop, we'll probably omit it unless it's an exceptionally good deal. For the few that we do include, we'll put an asterisk next to them.

We'll be updating this list throughout the weekend and up through Cyber Monday, so be sure to bookmark this page and check back frequently. In addition, some of the Cyber Monday deals will be live BEFORE Monday, so don't wait to click. Also, if you know of a PC-related deal we missed, feel free to share it in the comments section below!

*Note: As you may know, supplies for Cyber Monday deals are often highly limited, so keep that in mind if these deals are quickly snatched up!

Amazon

We're giving Amazon it's own category because from Sunday, November 24 through Black Friday weekend, the online retailer will be running new deals as often as every 10 minutes. The end of that monogamous relationship began when Samsung started installing "Experience Shops" inside the electronics chain, and now Best Buy is giving Microsoft the same opportunity to sell its wares by opening up Windows Stores at over 600 of its locations this summer. She's the one who put Band-Aids on boo-boos as opposed to dad who would just tell you to man up (again, regardless of gender) and rub some dirt in it. She's the one who sewed up your tattered Star Wars blanket long after it had seen better days, and she's the one who couldn't sit and relax for an evening to watch a recorded movie because you broke the VCR by shoving toys and peanut butter sandwiches inside.

Now that we're adults (legally speaking), Mother's Day is a time to atone for all our shenanigans as kids. Taking mom out to dinner is a good start, but what do you get her as a gift? That's where we come in. South Korea is a major cog in the electronics supply chain, as it accounts for half of the world's DRAM output, two-thirds of NAND flash manufacturing, and 70 percent of the world's tablet display.

IHS iSuppli says chaos would ensue if war were to break out in the region, and that it's such a serious threat, some forward-thinking technology firms are planning for such a contingency in the same way they prepare for other natural and man-made disasters that could negatively impact their businesses.

"South Korea now plays a more important role than ever in the global electronics business. And with the supply chain having become more entwined and connected, a significant disruption in any region will impact the entire world. Because of this, it is important for companies to understand the magnitude of South Korea’s role in the global electronics market—and to prepare for any contingencies," said Mike Howard, senior principal analyst for DRAM & memory at IHS.

Such a scenario could bring about a quick and significant impact on consumers. Just as there's a designated Apple section where customers can play with the latest iOS device, they'll now be able to do the same with products from Samsung, Apple's biggest competitor.

"Samsung has been delivering the latest innovation across the consumer electronics category for some time," said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Telecommunications America. "With the Samsung Experience Shops, we are ensuring consumers get the most of that innovation by learning how to leverage their mobile devices across our ecosystem of consumer electronics. Consumers will have one place to not only explore and learn about our full portfolio of mobile products, but also the support of a Samsung expert to help with selecting and servicing them. This will truly be a unique mobile shopping experience."

These specialized shops will vary in size, the largest being around 460 square feet. Larger shops will showcase a "Samsung Connected Solutions" area to demonstrate Samsung devices being connected to and sharing content with each other.

The announcement comes on the heels of Best Buy ending a six-month pilot program that saw Geek Squad agents offer installation, repair, and warranty services to electronics customers at 29 Target locations.
