The plethora of games seeking funding ranged from new concepts to sequels that boasted new, unique features or appealed to our sense of nostalgia. Because of Kickstarter, we have seen some amazing games that have raised millions of dollars in funding, such as Star Citizen and Pillars of Eternity.

Still, other Kickstarter projects raised much more money than their originally stated goals, thanks to an excited gaming community willing to fund them. However, over the past couple of years we’ve seen games that received funding way above their goals, then get cancelled due to not having enough funds (or other reasons).

Clang, a project headed by science fiction author Neal Stephenson, was cancelled two years after its successful Kickstarter campaign, because of financial issues. Double Fine, which had two successful Kickstarter campaigns, has stumbled with financial issues, too. Over the past two years, quite a few projects have fallen to the wayside or not lived up to the ambitions set by the developers.

Despite such examples, successfully funded games have slowly made their way to the community. So, we decided to list 10 Kickstarter games, in no particular order, that we feel are the best so far. However, we narrowed our list to games that have been completed and not being sold through Early Access.

But before you check out the gallery, we must give an honorable mention to Elite: Dangerous, which was recently released. It appears that it could easily make our "10 best" list but we didn't have a chance to play it before this article went to press. We will, however, consider updating this article with more high-quality AAA Kickstarter games as time progresses.

Feel free to let us know which Kickstarter-backed game is your favorite in the comments below.

Follow Sean on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/The_10_best_kickstarter_games_2014#comments 10 best Kickstarter games Chivalry Medieval Warfare Defense Grid 2 Divinity Original Sin don't starve FTL Kentucky Route Zero Kickstarter games Shadowrun Returns Shovel Knight The Banner Saga Wasteland 2 Gaming Features Fri, 19 Dec 2014 20:57:47 +0000 Sean D Knight 29097 at http://www.maximumpc.com Best of the Best: Now Updated! http://www.maximumpc.com/best_of_the_best_2014
Maximum PC's "Best of the Best" List Gets Updated

The holiday shopping is in full swing, and though Black Friday and Cyber Monday have both come and gone, deals and savings are all over the place. If you're going to shop for computer hardware, this is one of the best times of the year to do it. And as an added bonus, you can write some of this stuff off on your taxes if you're building a new system for work chores.

Deciding to buy new hardware is the easy part. Where it gets difficult is in deciding which hardware to purchase. To help make things easier for you, we've gone and updated our "Best of the Best" list one last time for 2014. We have refreshed entries for graphics cards, CPUs, motherboards, and storage.

You can check out all of our new pics in the gallery below, though keep in mind this is a small sample of the complete list, which you can view here. And hey, we know these things tend to stir up controversy, so if have a different pick in any given category, feel free to post it in the comments section along with a note as to why you think it's the best.
http://www.maximumpc.com/best_of_the_best_2014#comments best of the best Build a PC features gallery Hardware maximum pc Features Tue, 16 Dec 2014 21:32:27 +0000 The Maximum PC Staff and Paul Lilly 29010 at http://www.maximumpc.com How Logitech Is Reinventing the Mechanical Keyboard http://www.maximumpc.com/how_logitech_reinventing_mechanical_keyboard2014
We get an inside look at Logitech’s testing facilities in Switzerland

Logitech was once the premier PC gaming peripheral brand, but over the better part of a decade, the company shifted gears and started focusing on console accessories and other endeavors. In the years since, companies like Corsair, Razer, and SteelSeries have swooped in to take thunder away from the Switzerland-based company. With PC gaming being as big as it is today, Logitech tells us its wants to win back the hearts (and hands) of PC gamers everywhere.

The new Romer-G keys feel closest to Cherry MX Brown switches.

To show us its commitment to the PC market, Logitech invited us to its testing facility in Lausanne, Switzerland. The location is a vital part of the design process, as the company works with EPFL—one of the top engineering universities in Europe—which is located right next door. In addition to working with students from the university, Logitech is also working with professional gamers from League of Legends, Dota 2, and Counter-Strike. The logic here is that if it’s good enough for the pros, then it’s good enough for the Joes.

Logitech worked with League of Legends eSports team TSM and CS:GO's Cloud 9 to design its new peripherals.

At the facility, we toured the company’s keyboard and mouse labs. This article focuses on the company’s testing and design philosophies as they pertain to redesigning the mechanical keyboard. Stay tuned for the mouse write-up!

If you’re unaware, Logitech recently released its G910 Orion Spark mechanical keyboard, which is a unique offering in that unlike 90-plus percent of all other mechanical keyboards out there, it doesn't use Cherry MX switches. Instead the company opted to design its own switch.

We sat down with Logitech to discuss its new Romer-G switch type.

The problem with Cherry MX switches, asserts Logitech, is that they were designed over 25 years ago and were meant for typing. With that premise, the company thought the formula could use some tweaking for gaming. According to Logitech, for instance, Cherry MX keys take four millimeters to bottom out. While that isn’t a huge delay, the company set out to lessen it. Logitech worked for two years with Japanese company Omron to design an exclusive switch, and dubbed it Romer-G. Logitech says the Romer-G is 25 percent faster, taking only three millimeters to bottom out.

Another problem that Cherry MX keys face pertains to LED backlighting. If you’re sitting in front of an LED-backlit keyboard with Cherry MX switches, you may notice that only the top character of any given keycap is illuminated. This is because the lighting feature is generally tacked on above the Cherry MX switches. Logitech admits that this isn’t a huge problem with English-language keyboards, but that it can ruin the experience on Korean-language keyboards, which often use both the top and bottom halves of the keycaps to display a character. To remedy this, rather than placing the LED light above the switch, Romer-G keys integrate the lights directly on top of the t-shaped center of the switches themselves. The result is a much more uniform lighting experience, which is able to highlight all parts of a keycap evenly.

The Romer-G keys provide an even lighting experience.

Speaking of keyboard lighting, the G910 Orion Spark only requires one USB cable to power both the keyboard and its RGB lighting. This is a bit of an anomaly, considering Corsair’s similar K70 RGB requires two separate USB cables, as do others. Usually, getting enough power from one USB cable to power both elements is tough. Many gamers like having the option of getting ample light out of their keyboards, but that often ends up requiring lots of power, especially when you throw multicolored keycaps into the mix. And though it’s not something users might realize off the bat, inconsistent lighting can really taint a keyboard. Things start looking like a jumbled mess if some keycaps are brighter than others. According to Logitech, achieving an extremely bright keyboard uniformity is pretty much impossible, given the constraints of a single USB port, which the company was adamant about delivering. It’s much easier to achieve uniformity at dimmer levels, but there’s a point where it gets so dim that users are dissatisfied. Logitech admitted that it had to play the balancing game between both spectrums, but feels it achieved a happy medium with its solution.

Logitech uses machines to test its keyboard for up to 70 million clicks.

One area in which Logitech hopes its customers are happy pertains to its rigorous testing methodology. The company guarantees its keyboards for up to 70 million cycles (clicks), which it claims is about 20 million more than its competitors. It does its testing using high-speed machines that can press keys 13 times a second (the limit of these robots). The machines do this for 62 days and, voilà! That’s where you get your 70 million clicks. What aids in the durability of its new switch types is dual-redundancy actuators. So if you spill Coke on your keyboard and one actuator gives out, there is a second actuator that acts as a backup.

We're not entirely sold on the new indented keys, but Logitech says they're optimal gaming tactility.

Another modification that Logitech incorporated into its Romer-G keys is the implementation of indented keys. We’re not sure how we feel about these keys yet, as there is a definite period of adjustment moving from the more traditional flat-facing keycap designs. Logitech says its internal surveys show that these indented keys provided a greater sense of tactility when gaming. The company claims that you really know when you click down on a button, as a result. Though initially too aggressive with the depth of its indentation (users reported that it hindered word-processing experiences), the company scaled back the depth .5 millimeters.

In the video above, a truck runs over Logitech's G910 keyboard and all the LED lights still seem to work.

Beyond all the work that Logitech is doing on the hardware side, the company is also pushing its Arx Control mobile app. Compatible across Android and iOS devices, Logitech is working with game developers such as Valve, with the goal of allowing users to one day view in-game minimaps on their mobile devices. The app will also allow you to view your PC’s temperatures. The company’s G910 keyboard conveniently has a slot up at the top that allows you to drop in your phone or tablet of choice.

Logitech gives us a demo of what it's Arx Pax software can potentially do.

The G910 Orion Spark is available now. Many companies are trying to find the best ways to allow you to interact in these virtual worlds, but unfortunately, there is no clear great way to do it quite yet. To be fair, coming up with a solution that allows people to reach out into virtual worlds to pick up things with their hands is no easy task, but if anyone’s got a fighting chance at solving the puzzle, it’s Sixense.

If the company’s name sounds familiar, it’s because Sixense teamed up with Razer back in 2011 to develop the Wii remote–like Razer Hydra motion controller. While the device failed to make a big splash when it first launched, once the Oculus Rift development kit units started rolling out, the Razer Hydras quickly flew off shelves. They are now no longer in stock and go for a pretty penny on eBay.

The main issue currently holding back the Hydra is its wires. This isn’t the case with the company’s new STEM controllers, however. Not only is the device wireless, but Stem aims to offer a 1:1 movement experience with just 4.2 milliseconds of latency. And, while the Oculus Rift is intended to be used while sitting, the Sixense Stem is aiming to extend VR to standing experiences. It does this by foregoing DK2’s camera and instead opting for what the company refers to as its Stem pack. The Stem pack looks like a laptop battery that’s anchored on to the backside of the Rift’s headstrap. By doing this, it provides a much greater range of movement and users don’t have to deal with camera line-of-sight issues, which is currently a problem with the DK2.

The Sixense Stem system will support up to five points of contact.

We had a chance to try the Sixense Stem at the company’s Los Gatos location and got to play a variety of demos, the first of which was the company’s awesome lightsaber demo. The Stem System has a docking station for the controllers, and when you pick one up, you also pick up a virtual lightsaber within the demo. Flicking the light saber to turn it on felt incredibly immersive. Simply put, waving the lightsaber about just felt right. Toward the end of the demo, we got to deflect lasers from a droid and felt like Luke Skywalker on Tatooine.

The second demo we tried out took us to a shooting range. Shooting with the virtual gun felt accurate, and you could even use the in-game sights on top of the pistol to aim. It reminded us of the first time we played Wii bowling, albeit in a much more violent fashion.

Rather than rely on Oculus' camera for positional tracking, Sixense uses it's own Stem pack attachment.

The last demo we tried was one in which we walked around a virtual office using one of the Stem controller’s thumb sticks. Playing it standing up, we experienced some locomotion issues, in that our eyes were telling our brain that we were walking forward, but our body was not. It was definitely dizzying and goes back to the issue that properly nailing down VR controls is a tough problem to solve. Sea-leg issues aside, it felt great swiping books off of book shelves.

The Stem controller will also allow you to 3D print attachments to the top of the controllers, in case you wanted to add a sword or gun attachment. While this may sound silly given the fact that you won’t be able to see them with a VR headset on, Sixense believes it could help with the weight distribution of peripherals and make the experience more believable.

Beyond VR, Sixense also believes the Stem controllers can be used to shape 3D printed objects. The company is creating what it’s billing as a “gamified two-point of control CAD-engine” called Make VR. You’ll be able to use it without the Oculus Rift, the idea being that it will be an easy and intuitive interface that will allow you to create and edit 3D-printable objects.

Remember the Razer Hydra? If you're like us, you don't have any intention of heading into the city on Black Friday only be shoved, stepped on, and perhaps even punched in the jejunum by rapid shoppers making a mad dash toward the electronics section to score a discount on what little stock might be available. Why go through all that nonsense when you can shop deals from home?

Black Friday is done and over with, at least it's supposed to be, so we're begun posting Cyber Monday deals and will continue to add to the pile are more become available. However, many of the 'old' deals are still valid and will run through the weekend, so don't be shy about clicking on a lin k!

Note: We focused mostly on PC hardware deals. Just scroll to the category that interests you and click your way through to an awesome deal on that upgrade you've been waiting to make.

The format will be the same as last year -- Black Friday deals will be labeled with "(BF)" next to the link and we'll tag Cyber Monday deals with "(CM)" in the same manner. As deals expire, we'll cross them out but leave them clickable (it never hurts to double check, right?).

For the most part, we'll focus on deals that don't require a mail-in-rebate, though we won't omit them entirely. The ones we include will have an asterisk next to them.

Finally, we will be continually updating our list of links, so check back often, especially as some deals have a tendency to sell out fast. Also, if you know of a deal that should be included, feel free to share it in the comments section below.

Amazon

We're giving Amazon it's own category because from Monday, November 24 through Black Friday weekend, the online retailer will be running new deals as often as every 10 minutes.
A primer for the budding artist in all of us

We’ve been cataloging amazing video game screenshots in our monthly Graphics Porn feature, so we figured it’s about time we gave a quick primer on how to take stellar screenshots in your favorite games.

This goes beyond Print Screen and Paint. We’re not talking about hastily snapped screens of hilarious moments in Team Fortress 2 or a particularly well-designed cutscene. We do, however, consider utilities like Cheat Engine essential to the process.

Tools of the Trade

The first thing you’ll need is an application that’ll let you capture screens while in a game. There are an endless number of ways to grab screenshots, but we’ll just talk about two in this guide: Fraps and Steam. They’re both widely available, well known, and support uncompressed capture.

Fraps has been the tool of choice for a long, long time. It’s simple and offers a variety of options for both still and video capture of games. At $37, it’s not exactly an impulse buy, but it offers in-game capture to BMP, JPG, PNG, and even TGA files. If you’re not willing to shell out your hard-earned cash, skip over the free version—it adds watermarks—and opt for Steam instead.

PNG is our file format of choice for screenshots.

If you’re using FRAPS, head on over to the Screenshots tab and pick a screen-capture hotkey—Mouse4 or Mouse5 works great. Set the Image Format to PNG—JPG works fine if you’re happy with compressed images—and you’re ready to get snapping. By default, Fraps should overlay an FPS counter on the top left corner of your screen. Move it by pressing F12, but keep it visible because it offers a visual indication of a successful image capture.

On the other end of the spectrum is Steam. It’s an indelible part of the gaming world and the Steam client has become an integral part of any respectable gaming setup. Fortunately for screenshot takers, it also includes an easy way to capture images in game.

Steam isn't just a game distribution platform, it's also a game capture utility.

Pop open the Steam Settings window, head to the In-Game tab, and select a screenshot hotkey. Make sure you’ve checked the “Save an uncompressed copy” box to get the highest quality results. Enabling visual or audio notifications—“Play a sound” and “Display a notification”—is an easy way to make sure that you’re actually getting screenshots when you press your hotkey.

Next, you’ll need some games to capture. Anything at all will work, although the videogame photography community only supports certain games—we’ll talk more about this later. The latest and greatest aren’t always the best options since it’s not all about graphical fidelity.

Perhaps the most important tool that’s not directly related to the images being created is Cheat Engine (CE). Despite it’s name, CE is a memory scanner, hex editor, and debugger that gives video game photographers the ability to manipulate games. Ever wish you could just stop time in a game? With Cheat Engine, you can. Before you go off and download it, make sure you download the application in archived form to avoid bundled crapware—here's the direct link. The default download link available on the Cheat Engine site bundles the utility with OpenCandy-recommended software.

Many screenshot photographers also make use of mods and visual tweaks to squeeze the most out of their favorite games. We’re not going to cover them in this guide, but feel free to add any visual tweaks or in-game content as you see fit before heading into the game to grab screenshots.

Setting up the Moment

Unless you’re happy with taking screenshots from the default point of view, Cheat Engine—and user-created tables—allows you to manipulate the in-game camera, time, and sometimes other features like the field of view. Keep in mind that Cheat Engine could very well trigger anticheat software used by multiplayer games, so do your own research before attaching Cheat Engine to the process of a game with something like VAC or Punkbuster. We can't accept liability for banned accounts or other problems associated with running Cheat Engine.

It's called Cheat Engine, but we're not using it to cheat.

To get started, open up CheatEngine.exe and download a Cheat Engine table that’s compatible with your game. Again, not all games are supported. Technically savvy people like jim2point0 have to actually create these tables with more than a bit of hard work. The Game Specific Guides section of the DeadEndThrills forum is a great place to start.

Scroll through the list of processes to find the game you're capturing.

When you’ve got everything ready, hit Ctrl+O and select the table you downloaded. Start up your game, go to File, and click Open Process. Scroll through the list and look for the line containing your game—keep an eye out for the game’s icon or name. Hit Open and Yes when prompted to “Keep the current address list/code list?.”

The specific controls will vary depending on the creator of the table. The Tomb Raider guide created by jim2point0 uses F1 to toggle camera coordinates, F2 to toggle FOV changes, and F4, F5, and F6 to toggle time on and off.

Four different ways to download your favorite clips

Streaming YouTube videos can quickly eat up your precious cellular data plan. In fact, most people don't watch videos on the go because of limited data plans. A way around this is to download videos onto a PC, then copy them to your mobile device. We’ve rounded up four ways to download YouTube videos and chosen our favorite of the bunch.

Kibase

Step 1: Go to www.kibase.com and click YouTube Downloader.

Step 2: On your YouTube video, right click, then select Page Source.

Step 3: Select and copy all the HTML text (Ctrl+A to select the text and Ctrl+C to copy it).

Step 4: Paste the text into the white box labled Step 2 and then click Submit. Your video will begin downloading to your computer as an MP4 file. Note: To change the format of the video, uncheck the Start Downloading the video file automatically when it is ready box before you click Submit.

You will then be moved to a new page showing you different format options you can choose from.

Keepvid

Step 1: Go to www.keepvid.com and copy and paste your YouTube link into the search bar.

Step 2: You will be prompted to download Java for Windows, if you don’t have it already installed on your computer.

Step 3: Your browser will ask if you want to run Java on www.Keepvid.com; click Run This Time.

Step 4: You will be given a set of resolutions and formats to choose from. Select the one you want, and the video will begin downloading. Note: The blue download button leads you to an ad for freeware, so don’t click it!

Clip Grab

Okay, some of this guide will be pretty obvious. In short, you’ll need to download the .exe and navigate through the installer, dodging freeware prompts.

Step 1: Go to www.clipgrab.com and click Free Download.

Step 2: The first piece of freeware that you’ll be prompted to install is Conduit. Click I do not accept and then click Next.

Step 3: The next adware you’ll be prompted to install is PureLeads. Again, click I do not accept and then click Next.

Step 4: Double click on Clip Grab and launch the program. Once it’s launched, copy your YouTube link into the search bar in the Search Tab.

Step 5: Click the Downloads tab to pick and choose what video format and resolution you want for the video. Next, click Grab This Clip and your video will begin downloading.

Freemake

There is a ton of freeware bundled into Freemake, so watch out. It's not hard to accidently install a random add-on or an extra toolbar.

Step 1: Go to www.freemake.com and click the green Download Now link to download the .exe file.

Step 2: Select your language and click OK to continue the installation process.

Step 3: Click Custom installation (advanced) and uncheck Install Search Protect.

Step 4: Click Custom installation and uncheck the Install PureLeads box.

Step 5: Click Custom installation and uncheck the Install browser plugins (Chrome, Firefox) box.

Step 6: Select the drive to install Freemake on and then click Next to begin the installation.

Step 7: Launch Freemake and copy a YouTube URL to your clipboard using Ctrl+C. After this, you can select the video format you want to download the video as, by clicking on the different formats on the bar at the bottom of the application.

We’ve used all of these methods to download YouTube videos, and we like Kibase the best, as it’s easy to use and it requires no extra installation of add-ons or .exes. A close second would be Keepvid because it only requires a Java for Windows installation. The other two download methods, Clip Grab and Freemake, use .exe programs to snatch your videos from YouTube. They also come with extra freeware you’ll need to navigate through, which is annoying, but they do allow you download YouTube videos a few different formats that Kibase and Keepvid don’t offer, which include AVI and WMV. Again, if you don’t want to deal with .exes or downloading any extra installers to your PC, then Kibase is the way to go.
http://www.maximumpc.com/how_download_youtube_videos_2014#comments clip grab download YouTube videos freemake how to keepvid kibase News Features How-Tos Fri, 14 Nov 2014 18:08:06 +0000 Chris Zele 27390 at http://www.maximumpc.com
