Office 365 ushers in an era of subscription billing.

After months of beta testing, Microsoft on Tuesday announced the worldwide availability of Office 365 Home Premium. It's a departure from previous versions of Office, and while Microsoft likes to refer to Windows 8 as a reimagining of Windows, Office 365 is a "reinvention" of Redmond's popular Office product line for consumers. Unlike previous versions, Office 365 is a cloud-service.

Bill Gates feels confident in Microsoft’s new Direction, and has no desire to return as CEO.

Okay so he might be just the tiniest bit biased, but Bill Gates claims Windows 8 and the Surface tablet have “done well”. His answer was a response to a CNBC interview question with regards to the future of his company, and if he would ever consider reclaiming his CEO title from Steve Ballmer. According to Gates, Windows 8 and the Surface were both developed without his guidance, and as a result he feels the company is doing just fine without him.

H.265 Video Codec Gets The ITU Seal of Approval

Twice the pixels, or half the bandwidth. Sounds like a good deal to us.

H.265 has been on our radar since early 2012, but as of today it has passed an important milestone. The ITU has given the new codec its official approval, paving the way for devices and software to start implementing the standard as they see fit. H.265 (also known as High Efficiency Video Coding) will cut the bandwidth requirements for streaming video in half, or for the Maximum PC crowd, double the amount data you can fit in the same sized container.

Microsoft Boasts Record Revenue Following Windows 8 Sales Push

Over 60 million Windows 8 licenses have been sold to date, according to Microsoft.

Microsoft this week announced record quarterly revenue of $21.45 billion for the three-month period ended December 31, 2012. Redmond's Windows Division posted revenue of $5.88 billion, up 24 percent from one year prior, though on a pro forma basis that number slides to 11 percent after factoring in net deferral of revenue for the Windows Upgrade Offer and the recognition of the previously deferred revenue from Windows 8 pre-sales.

Nvidia GeForce Experience Beta Now Available to the Public

GeForce Experience hits open beta status and adds support for new games.

Nvidia on Thursday announced that its GeForce Experience beta program is now open to anyone and everyone who wants to kick its tires, so long as you're driving a supported graphics card (and no, AMD cards are not supported). It initially launched as a closed beta back in December 2012, and since that time, over 40,000 gamers downloaded the app. Nvidia said it's been using the feedback it's received over the past month to make improvements.

Frustrated with its initial launch, Microsoft is reportedly planning to reboot Windows 8 in February.

Microsoft is reportedly pissed at PC makers for failing to ready themselves for the launch of Windows 8 back in October. Without naming its source(s), The Register claims Microsoft believes OEMs should have been ready with more attractive Windows 8-based touchscreen tablets, and had they been on the ball, the reception would have been much more positive. Why is Rockstar Games being so coy about a version of Grand Theft Auto V for PCs?

Oh Rockstar Games, why must you be so secretive? Rockstar Games has yet to announce or confirm that the next installment of its popular Grand Theft Auto franchise -- Grand Theft Auto V -- will ship to PC, even though every previous title in the series has. Don't worry yourself silly over it, not only does history provide a strong case for GTA V shipping to PC, but pre-order pages on several Amazon portals in Europe may have let the cat out of the bag.

Windows 8 has tons of post-sale revenue potential, so is $200 too much to ask?

We’ve seen this story reported on by several blogs around the web, but few seem to point out that the price of Windows 8 isn’t going up, its just returning to normal. Microsoft’s promotional pricing that allowed for $15 upgrades with the purchase of a new Windows 7 PC, or $40 if you have anything newer than XP expires at the end of the month, and it doesn’t look like they have any intention of extending it.

Ever since Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) ditched its monthly schedule for Catalyst driver updates, it's been a big guessing game for Radeon graphics card owners as to when a new release would be available. If you fall into that category, then you'll be pleased to know that there's a new driver update available to download, Catalyst 13.1. The latest drivers bring about the usual assortment of bug fixes and performance improvements across a variety of titles.

A proposed law in Missouri would tax games rated T for Teen and up.

The reason we had you do that is because we don't want you to hurt yourself with the inevitable facepalm that's about to follow. You see, Missouri State Representative Diane Franklin (R) has proposed a sales tax on violent video games that would apply to any title rated T for Teen and up by the ESRB, our sister site PCGamer.com reports.
