Microsoft's Gabriel Aul of the Windows Preview team tweeted out some inconvenient news to Windows 10 users who have Office installed. In order to install the crop of updates for this month's Patch Tuesday, Windows 10 users will have to first uninstall Office, or the installer will fail. Once all the security patches are applied, users are free to then reinstall Office on their Windows 10 rigs.
Variants of the Turla Trojan for Windows has been found on Linux systems
Security researchers have discovered at least two Linux-based variants of a Trojan that for years has been infecting Windows systems. Dubbed "Turla," the Trojan has been around for four years or more and has infected hundreds of Windows machines in use at government institutions, embassies, military facilities, educational institutions, and research and pharmaceutical companies.
Along with a new OS release comes a new strategy to make money
Things are going to be different with Windows 10 in a number of ways, and all presumably for the better (or so we're hoping and knocking on wood with Hulk-like force). It's not just the features and design that Microsoft is altering, however, but also its business model. Microsoft COO Kevin Turner spoke at a Credit Suisse technology investment conference recently, revealing that his company is looking at new ways of making money off of Windows.
The first Fedora release influenced by the Fedora.next initiative
Fedora 21 is now available to the general public, representing the first OS release to come out of the Fedora.next initiative, which emphasizes increased modularity and flexibility that go beyond the desktop. It's a new vision for Fedora, in terms of the way it's developed and the types of users it's targeting, and with Fedora 21 come three different variants -- Fedora 21 Cloud, Fedora 21 Server, and Fedora 21 Workstation.
Between the holiday sales and promotions that have been going on lately, your wallet or purse is probably significantly lighter than it was a month ago. Hey, tis the season for spending, right? Or perhaps it's giving, which the mood AMD is in these days. Closing out the year in style, AMD just released its Catalyst Omega special edition driver, which it describes as the biggest and best software upgrade it's released this year.
The Witcher 3 is proving too big and complex to ship on time
All good things come to those who wait, right? If so, The Witcher 3 is going to be really, really good when it finally ships. Developer CD Projekt announced another delay for The Witcher 3, pushing back the release three months and setting a new launch date of May 19, 2015. According to an open letter published by The Board of CD PROJEKT SA, the delay essentially relates to the growing size of the game.
The general release time frame for Windows 10 gets narrower
In the past, we were told that Windows 10 would launch to the public sometime in late 2015. While no specific release date has yet been set, Microsoft has at least tightened the launch window by revealing Windows 10 is on track to come out in late summer or early fall" of next year. That's according to Microsoft Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Turner, who talked a little about Windows 10's release at a Credit Suisse Technology Conference recently.
If you play video games at home, you have Ralph H. Baer in part to thank for that. For those of you who are not familiar with the name, Baer was a video game pioneer who led the development team that created the Magnavox Odyssey, the first commercial home game console with a mere 40 transistors and 40 diodes. Sadly, Ralph H. Baer died last Saturday at his home in Manchester, New Hampshire, at the age of 92.
If you're planning to play Dying Light when it releases to the public next month, hopefully you were able to take advantage of the various Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals and upgrade your PC. Publisher Warner Bros. Entertainment posted the minimum and recommended specs of Dying Light on Steam -- they're fairly heavy, especially the recommended portion, which calls for an Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 or AMD Radeon R9 290 graphics card.
PC gamers (and PS4 players) get first dibs on Street Fighter V
Being a PC gamer doesn't come without the occasional indignity, likely crappy console ports and being left out of the equation altogether. Thankfully it's not always like that, and it certainly won't be that way when Street Fighter V comes out, or so it seems. How do we know? Capcom posted a game trailer revealing that Street Fighter V will launch exclusively to Windows PCs and the PlayStation 4.
