Split-screen multi-tasking in the original Galaxy Note? Yes, please!

Original Galaxy Note owners no longer have to look at their Galaxy Note II brethren with envy, at least not as it pertains to software. That's because Samsung is allowing Galaxy Note owners to feast on Jelly Bean, as confirmed by an updated product page detailing the device's Premium Suite update. It's a pretty extensive update that brings with it many of the same tricks and features found on the Galaxy Note II, including dual-window multitasking, pop-up Notes, photo frames, an enhanced S Note, and more.

Make free calls in the U.S. and Canada from your Gmail account.

Do you use Gmail to make phone calls? Did you even know that feature existed? Either way, Google is extending the free calling feature for Gmail users in the U.S. and Canada for at least another year. The "Call phones from Gmail" service launched in 2010, allowing users to make and receive free domestic calls (and low rates for other countries) right from within Gmail.

McAfee predicts rapid evolution of cyberthreats in 2013.

If you thought Windows 8 would provide refuge from an increasingly malware infested web, think again. Security firm McAfee has just released its annual Threat Predictions report in which it highlights the top threats it foresees for the coming year, and like it or not, Windows 8 is going to be a major target. Despite improved security in Windows 8, McAfee believes targeted malware will be available faster than it was for Windows 7.

Whether or not Windows Phone can compete with Android and iOS will depend on apps.

As 2012 comes to an end, Microsoft finds itself in a reflective mood, looking back at what it's accomplished in the past year and what its plans are for 2013. One of Microsoft's biggest areas of focus in 2012 has been mobile, and towards that end, the Redmond outfit published 75,000 new Windows Phone apps and games to effectively more than double the catalog size, and over 300,000 app updates.

Instagram Hit with Class Action Lawsuit

Despite reversing course on ToS changes, Instagram faces a first civil lawsuit.

Instagram quickly backpedaled from a revised Terms of Service (ToS) agreement that said users would have to "agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos...in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you," but it still managed to trip over a class action lawsuit. The civil suit was filed in San Francisco and charges Instagram with breach of contract and other claims.

The weather outside is frightful, but gaming is so delightful, and since we've no place to go, let us save, let us save, let us save! Okay, so that last part doesn't exactly rhyme, but botched Christmas carols aside, now is a great time to barricade yourself indoors for some PC gaming, and Steam wants to help you do that. The annual Steam Holiday Sale has now begun, giving you an opportunity to save big (and probably end up spending more than you anticipated).

Vudu Crashes Android Party with 100,000 Movies and TV Shows

Android users rejoice, Vudu is now available (for certain tablets).

At long last, Vudu is finally available for select Android tablets. The new app arrives at Google Play about a year after Vudu launched to iOS, and it brings with it access to more than 100,000 movies and TV shows to supported tablets running Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) or later. Vudu says it plans on expanding support to include "many more tablet models and smartphones" in the near future, though stopped short of offering up any specifics.

After being ousted from Microsoft, Steven Sinofsky will spend some time teaching at Harvard.

Steven Sinofsky, the former head of Microsoft's Windows division who was ousted shortly after the launch of Windows 8, has washed up at Harvard Business School. His new title is "Executive in Residence" and his tasks include research, writing, teaching students product development, planning, collaboration, and more, Sinofsky announced in a pair of Twitter messages. He added the hashtag "sabbatical" to one of his tweets, indicating this is probably a temporary role.

Nvidia's latest drivers boost performance by up to 38 percent.

Fresh out of the oven and topped with WHQL certification is Nvidia's new 310.70 driver package for Windows. Nvidia's latest drivers deliver big performance gains in some situations, including up to 38 percent better framerates in Far Cry 3 (for GeForce GTX 680 graphics card owners). It also serves up double-digit percentage gains in several other titles, according to the release highlights.
