Farewell LucasArts, and Thanks for the Grog

Today's a sad day for any old school graphic adventurer (such as myself) who grew up wandering every inch of Maniac Mansion looking for that damned can of gas, and then finally finding it on Mars while playing Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. For those of you who know what the hell I'm talking about, understand we're a dying breed of gamer, but I digress. The real story here is in the headline. Disney, less than five months after prying Lucasfilm from George Lucas' hands for $4.05 billion, has decided to close the LucasArts game studio. Go ahead and tip your grog glass over the pavement.

Futuremark Ports 3DMark Benchmark to Android

3DMark for Android is now available.

Futuremark today announced that the Android version of 3DMark is now available to download, giving Android device owners another benchmark at their disposal. Several prominent technology firms provided input into the benchmark's design, including Imagination Technologies, Intel, Broadcom, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and others. One of the goals was to make it so that scores could be compared across platforms, and apparently Futuremark delivered.

Android 2.3.x (Gingerbread) is still the most popular version of Android in terms of market share.

Still waiting on your device maker and wireless carrier to dish up Jelly Bean to replace Ice Cream Sandwich on your mobile phone? Hey, it could be worse. You could be stuck on Android 2.3.x (Gingerbread) where 44.1 percent of all Android users reside, or on an even older build (Froyo, Elcair, or Donut), which collectively account another 9.6 percent of the Android camp. Add them together you have nearly 54 percent of the Android userbase rocking a dated version of their OS.

Windows 7 users don't seem to be in a rush to upgrade to Windows 8.

Another month is in the books, and that means we have another opportunity to examine Windows 8's impact on the market. According to Net Market Share, Windows 8's share of the desktop market has slowly crawled to 3.17 percent, up half a percentage point from February and up from a 2.26 percent share in January. What's interesting here is that Windows 7's penetration doesn't seem any worse for wear since Windows 8 debuted five months ago.

Intel Readies HD Graphics Driver Update for Ivy Bridge

New graphics drivers for Ivy Bridge will add Ultra HD support.

If you're using the integrated graphics embedded into your 3rd generation Core processor (Ivy Bridge) from Intel, get ready for a driver update that's supposed to improve power and performance, as well as add new features. Intel HD Graphics driver 15.31 will be the seventh update since the introduction of 2nd generation Core processors (Sandy Bridge), and though it was built for 4th gen chips (Haswell), it will work on Ivy Bridge too.

Razer Edge Gaming Tablet Ships with Steam Software Pre-Installed

At least you won't have to worry about installing Steam.

Razer is pretty stoked to let the world know that its Edge tablet for gamers will soon come pre-installed with Valve's Steam software, enabling users to more quickly tap into their existing games library. Of course, you could always download Steam yourself, but hey, we'd rather see Steam sitting there than a bunch of trialware and other bloat that OEMs sometimes like to load their systems with. Still, we have reservations about the Edge.

The infamous Humble Bundle is proof positive that not all gamers are cheapskates. You know the drill -- you donate $1 or more and, as a reward, you receive a collection of titles. Spanish Linux Group Targets Microsoft in Complaint to EU

Open source group takes issue with Microsoft's controversial UEFI Secure Boot mechanism.

A Spanish open software group has filed a complaint against Microsoft with the European Union claiming that it's unnecessarily difficult to install Linux on Windows 8 hardware. Hispalinux, which is made up of 8,000 Linux users and developers living in Spain, issued a 14-page complaint regarding Microsoft's UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot technology, which the group calls an "obstruction mechanism."

Play as popular DC Comics characters reimagined, such as Nightmare Batman.

Turbine Entertainment is developing an all-new multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) game featuring a deep roster of DC Comics characters, Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC Entertainment announced today. It's called Infinite Crisis, a free-to-play game in which you'll battle other players in the DC Multiverse using a wide variety of heroes and villains that are "twisted incarnations" of their regular selves, such as Nightmare Batman and Gaslight Catwoman.
