The problem was further exacerbated by the fact that Microsoft said it didn't have a new build planned until early 2015. If you're one of the people who ran into trouble, here's a heads up that Microsoft has released a hotfix to address the issue.

According to Microsoft, the problem affected about 12 percent of PCs when installing the update. In those instances, the update would fail to install, and after doing some digging, Microsoft determined there were two underlying bugs that needed squashed.

The first is that in Build 9879, Microsoft introduced some new System Compression code that systems with SSDs can take advantage of to reduce disk usage by the OS. However, the logic for low-space detection would get inverted in some instances, and Windows compresses automatically as a background operation.

A second bug appeared on PCs that had system compression enabled. It would muck with how the file system tracks deletes, causing the installer to think the temp files failed to extract correctly.

There was a workaround for the problem, though now the easiest solution is to apply the new hotfix that's now available through Windows Update, according to Microsoft's Gabriel Aul.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/microsoft_issues_hotfix_windows_10_update_issue_12_percent_users_rejoice_2014#comments hotfix microsoft operating system OS patch Security Software windows 10 News Tue, 16 Dec 2014 16:27:49 +0000 Paul Lilly 29098 at http://www.maximumpc.com Xbox App Pops Up in Leaked Windows 10 Build http://www.maximumpc.com/xbox_app_pops_leaked_windows_10_build_2014
Yes console games, we can all get along

There are several interesting things taking place in the leaked Windows 10 build, the one that Microsoft is apparently super calm about making the rounds. One that we wanted to touch a bit more on is a new Xbox app. This is something that Microsoft is still working on, as the app clearly states when it's fired up, but the Redmond outfit is so excited about it that it wanted to give early users a sneak peek.

The folks over at The Verge have been playing around with Xbox app. They say it appears to act as a gateway into the entire Xbox ecosystem -- you'll have access to achievements, your friends list, activity feeds, and the Store. And since it's an extremely early version, there's speculation that the final release might include SmartGlass integration as well.

As our sister site PC Gamer points out, there's a chance this could be what Microsoft's Phil Spencer was referring to a week ago when he said it was "time for us to talk about gaming on Windows." Or so that's the plan. Using innovations from Microsoft Research, the first phase of the Skype Translator preview program is kicking off today with two spoken languages -- Spanish and English. It will also feature over 40 instant messaging languages for Skype customers who have signed up via the Skype Translator sign-up page and are using Windows 8.1.

It also works on preview copies of Windows 10. What it does is translate voice input from someone speaking English or Spanish into text or voice. The technology relies on machine learning, so the more it gets used, the better it will be at translating audio and text.

"This is just the beginning of a journey that will transform the way we communicate with people around the world. Our long-term goal for speech translation is to translate as many languages as possible on as many platforms as possible and deliver the best Skype Translator experience on each individual platform for our more than 300 million connected users," Skype stated in a blog post.

Translations occur in "near real-time," Microsoft says. In addition, there's an on-screen transcript of your call. Given the many nuances of various languages and the pace at which communication changes, this is a pretty remarkable feat that Microsoft's attempting to pull off. There's ton of upside as well, from the business world to use in classrooms.

If you want to test it out yourself -- and Microsoft hopes you do, as it's looking for feedback at this early stage -- you can register for the program by going here.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/skype_will_begin_translating_your_speech_today_2014#comments microsoft Skype Software Translation VOIP News Mon, 15 Dec 2014 17:57:41 +0000 Paul Lilly 29092 at http://www.maximumpc.com Microsoft Turns New Leaf, Isn't Bothered By Windows 10 Leaks http://www.maximumpc.com/microsoft_turns_new_leaf_isnt_bothered_windows_10_leaks_2014
It's all good in Redmond's hood

Excuse us as we do a double take, the only normal reaction to Microsoft being totally chill with a new build of Windows 10 being leaked to the public before its intended release. We're referring to Build 9901, which contains a whole bunch of consumer-specific features and improvements, not all of them working. It leaked to the web over the weekend, and Microsoft's response is refreshingly relaxed.

"@GabeAul Im really enjoying your MS/'s attitude regarding preview/leaked builds. It's refreshing," Twitter user Brian Haslip posted to the microblogging site.

In response, the longtime Microsoft veteran tweeted back, "How could we be upset about lots of people wanting to try our new stuff? We'd prefer you stick to official builds though," followed by a smiling emoticon.

That's a different type of response than we're used to hearing from Microsoft. Consider that in the past, Microsoft would warn users that pre-release versions of Windows 7 could contain malware, an honest statement but also one that was intended to scare users away from playing with leaked builds.

This time around, Microsoft seems fine with the curiosity, perhaps because it needs Windows 10 to be a smashing success. Those affected are advised to install an update title KB 3024777, which will remove the original patch from their systems.

The second issue involves Exchange Server 2010 SP3 Update Rollup 8. A day after it was released, Microsoft had to pull it offline while it works on putting out a new version.

"The issue impacts the ability of Outlook to connect to Exchange, thus we are taking the action to recall the RU8 to resolve this problem," Microsoft said. "We will deliver a revised RU8 package as soon as the issue can be isolated, corrected, and validated."

Microsoft bundles security fixes and bug patches into a monthly roll out on the second Tuesday of every month known as Patch Tuesday. Dubbed "Turla," the Trojan has been around for four years or more and has infected hundreds of Windows machines in use at government institutions, embassies, military facilities, educational institutions, and research and pharmaceutical companies.

According to TechNewsWorld, security outfit Kaspersky Lab discovered the two variants running on Linux. One is a C/C++ executable statically linked against multiple libraries and stripped of symbol information, presumably so it would difficult for researchers to reverse engineer. Details of the second variant haven't been released by Kaspersky.

These are highly sophisticated malware samples that appear to have come from Russia. Some researchers believe they're government funded, which would make sense given the institutions they've been targeting.

The Turla sampled described above is based on a proof-of-concept backdoor malware that has been around for several years. It provides remote access to systems without showing an open port at all times -- a trick it accomplishes by using a sniffer to capture packets.

The Linux Turla can also hide itself without elevated priveleges as it runs arbitrary remote commands. That means it will still function as intended even if a regular user with limited privileges launches it.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/long_time_windows_trojan_trots_over_linux_2014#comments linux malware Security Software Trojan turla News Wed, 10 Dec 2014 18:41:03 +0000 Paul Lilly 29069 at http://www.maximumpc.com Microsoft Keeps Mum on New Plans to Monetize Windows, Will Reveal Strategy in 2015 http://www.maximumpc.com/microsoft_keeps_mum_new_plans_monetize_windows_will_reveal_strategy_2015
Along with a new OS release comes a new strategy to make money

Things are going to be different with Windows 10 in a number of ways, and all presumably for the better (or so we're hoping and knocking on wood with Hulk-like force). It's not just the features and design that Microsoft is altering, however, but also its business model. Microsoft COO Kevin Turner spoke at a Credit Suisse technology investment conference recently, revealing that his company is looking at new ways of making money off of Windows.

One of the strategies has already been put in motion, and that's the removal of royalties on devices with screens that are 9 inches or smaller. The intention there was to fight back against the Chromebook push and reinvigorate the low-end laptop market with Windows machines. As a result, it's now possible to find plenty of Windows laptops in the range of $200, and a few that even go for half that much.

However, giving Windows away for free isn't something we should get used to, as Microsoft has no plans of making Windows 10 a loss leader. According to Hexus.net, Turner revealed that Microsoft will instead make up some of the difference in revenue by looking at other ways to make money from Windows, though he didn't say exactly what they would be.

"We've got to monetize it differently. And there are services involved," Turner said. "There are additional opportunities for us to bring additional services to the product and do it in a creative way. And through the course of the summer and spring we'll be announcing what that business model looks like."

Turner added that Microsoft's first 39 years was highlighted by "one of the greatest business models of all time built around" Windows, though said that's in the past. Looking to the future, he sees opportunities in "becoming a cloud OS, a devices operating system, having first party hardware light up those experiences," while also providing a dual-user experience (work and play, basically).

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/microsoft_keeps_mum_new_plans_monetize_windows_will_reveal_strategy_2015#comments kevin turner microsoft operating system OS Software Windows windows 10 News Tue, 09 Dec 2014 18:40:43 +0000 Paul Lilly 29062 at http://www.maximumpc.com Fedora 21 Arrives in Three Different Versions http://www.maximumpc.com/fedora_21_arrives_three_different_versions_2014
The first Fedora release influenced by the Fedora.next initiative

Fedora 21 is now available to the general public, representing the first OS release to come out of the Fedora.next initiative, which emphasizes increased modularity and flexibility that go beyond the desktop. It's a new vision for Fedora, in terms of the way it's developed and the types of users it's targeting, and with Fedora 21 come three different variants -- Fedora 21 Cloud, Fedora 21 Server, and Fedora 21 Workstation.

"With Fedora 21, we are able to address specific use cases across the desktop, the server room and the cloud, bringing to light new developer tools, enabling specific server roles, and providing a powerful, lightweight host for containerized applications," said Matthew Miller, Fedora project leader.

Though the three variants take aim at meeting specific user demands in different areas, each one is built from a common base set of packages -- they contain the same Linux kernel, RPM, yum, systemd, and Anaconda. In other words, the foundation is the same, even though they spread their wings in different directions.

Fedora 21 Cloud provides images for use in private cloud environments, like OpenStack, and Amazon Machine Images for use on Amazon Web Services. It also has a base image to enable creation of Fedora containers.

The Server version introduces three new technologies to handle the management and installation of discrete infrastructure. They include Rolekit (provides a Role deployment and management tooklit for admins), Cockpit (web-based user interface for configuring, managing, and monitoring servers), and OpenLMI (remote management system built on top of Distributed Management Taskforce -- Common Information Model for scripting management functions across machines).

Finally, Fedora 21 Workstation offers a streamlined software installation, experimental Wayland support, and DevAssistant to automate the setup process for a larger number of language runtimes and integrated development environments.

You can find out more about each one here.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/fedora_21_arrives_three_different_versions_2014#comments fedora 21 fedora.next linux open source operating system OS Software News Tue, 09 Dec 2014 18:18:14 +0000 Paul Lilly 29061 at http://www.maximumpc.com AMD's Year End Gift to Gamers is Catalyst Omega, a Special Edition Driver http://www.maximumpc.com/amds_year_end_gift_gamers_catalyst_omega_special_edition_driver_2014
Performance improvements and bug fixes galore

Between the holiday sales and promotions that have been going on lately, your wallet or purse is probably significantly lighter than it was a month ago. Hey, tis the season for spending, right? Or perhaps it's giving, which the mood AMD is in these days. Closing out the year in style, AMD just released its Catalyst Omega special edition driver, which it describes as the biggest and best software upgrade it's released this year.

"It's our of way of saying 'Thank you' and Happy Holidays," AMD stated in a blog post, though it's much more than that. Catalyst Omega represents a new era in driver design for AMD, one what will see major updates overflowing with new features, performance enhancements, and bug fixes, in addition to the regularly scheduled releases that are usually game-specific in optimizations. In a way, it's sort of like rival Intel's tick-tock schedule for CPUs, though instead of die shrinks and architecture changes, AMD's minor and major Catalyst releases will feature enhancements and feature-packed upgrades.

In this particular case, installing the special edition Catalyst Omega driver will introduce featuers like 5K (5120x2880 at 60Hz) monitor support; Virtual Super Resolution (VSR), which renders games at a higher resolution and then displays them at a lower resolution with the supposed intent of delivering 4K-like visuals on a 1080p monitor; support for Alienware's Graphics Amplifier; Frame Pacing enhancements for dual-graphics setups; and lots more.

All tallied, there are over 20 new features and 400 bug fixes included in Catalyst Omega, plus a bunch of performance improvements. To give an example of the latter, AMD says Radeon R9 290X graphics card owners who install the special edition driver will see up to 19 percent faster gameplay in BioShock Infinite. Likewise, the driver boosts performance for A10 7850K APU owners by up to 29 percent in Batman: Arkham Origins.

You can read more of what AMD had to say in its blog post, and if you're sold, you can download Catalyst Omega here.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/amds_year_end_gift_gamers_catalyst_omega_special_edition_driver_2014#comments amd catalyst omega driver Gaming Software News Tue, 09 Dec 2014 17:19:47 +0000 Paul Lilly 29059 at http://www.maximumpc.com The Witcher 3 Cursed with Another Delay http://www.maximumpc.com/witcher_3_cursed_another_delay_2014
The Witcher 3 is proving too big and complex to ship on time

All good things come to those who wait, right? If so, The Witcher 3 is going to be really, really good when it finally ships. Developer CD Projekt announced another delay for The Witcher 3, pushing back the release three months and setting a new launch date of May 19, 2015. According to an open letter published by The Board of CD PROJEKT SA, the delay essentially relates to the growing size of the game.

"Ever since we started working on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, we knew it would be an ambitious game. We wanted, and still aim, to give you an incredible experience, an epic adventure in a vast, completely open fantasy universe," the letter reads. "The sheer size and complexity of The Witcher, key features of the title, have had a decisive impact on production. Now, nearing the end of our work, we see many details that need to be corrected."

CD Projekt considers this to be the "most important game" in the studio's history, and therefore wants to make sure it rids as many bugs from the initial launch as it can. With that in mind, the thinking heads came to the conclusion that an additional 12 weeks would suffice.

It stinks for those who have been eagerly awaiting the game's release, but at the same time, you don't get the sense that CD Projekt is taking gamers' patience for granted. Plus, it's hard to argue with a studio wanting to put out a polished product rather than rushing out a buggy mess.

"We owe you an apology. We set the release date too hastily. It’s a hard lesson, one to take to heart for the future. We know what we want to do to make Wild Hunt one of the best RPGs you will ever play. And we continue to work hard to achieve just that. So, we apologize and ask for your trust," CD Projekt said.

Follow Paul on Google+, Twitter, and Facebook
http://www.maximumpc.com/witcher_3_cursed_another_delay_2014#comments CD PROJECKT SA delay games Software The Witcher 3 News Mon, 08 Dec 2014 19:47:59 +0000 Paul Lilly 29054 at http://www.maximumpc.com
