Our top 30 favorite Windows 8 apps as of March 2013

When Windows 8 launched we posted our 18 best of the best app picks from the new Windows Store. Four months later we found the situation hasn’t been improving as quickly as we'd like, but at least a handful of new apps are worthy of your attention. The goal of this column going forward is to let us take on the burden sifting through all the crapware, and finding the precious few apps that are actually worth installing. It’s a thankless job, but somebody has to do it.

Our list of the 18 best launch apps has been updated with an additional 12 new picks, and we intend to keep this article updated going forward. Hit the jump and lay down a bookmark to keep an eye on the ever evolving Windows 8 app scene.

Linux Users Come Out of the Woodwork in Latest Steam Hardware Survey

The number of Linux users on Steam more than doubled last month.

Fearing Microsoft will build a walled garden around Windows 8, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell began focusing Steam development on Linux, and that effort is starting to show up in the real world. To wit, the latest Steam Hardare Survey reveals that Linux usage on Steam has more than doubled in February, jumping from 0.8 percent a month prior to 2.02 percent currently.

Windows 8 may be struggling, but Internet Explorer is thriving.

For years Internet Explorer has been easy to pick on, but for once the Redmond based software giant is bucking the trend. Market share for Internet Explorer has reached an 18-month high, and it seems to have done so largely at the expense of Google Chrome. In February IE climbed 0.68 points to 55.82 percent. Chrome dropped 1.21 percent, and Firefox rocketed above 20 percent to settle at 16.27 and 20.12 percent respectively.

Pandora Imposes 40 Hour Monthly Limit for Mobile Freeloaders

Don't like the 40-hour limit? Blame greedy publishers who keep hiking royalty rates.

Pandora this week put the word out that it's introducing a 40-hour monthly cap on free mobile listening, though the streaming service doesn't expect much of a backlash. According to Pandora, the artificial limit will affect less than 4 percent of its total monthly active listeners. The average freeloader listener spends around half that time (20 hours) listening to Panodra across all devices in any given month, Pandora says.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Surprisingly Shows Up in Browsermark, Climbs to Top Spot

Samsung's upcoming flagship smartphone bests the competition in Rightware's Browsermark benchmark.

It's expected Samsung will launch its highly anticipated Galaxy S IV smartphone at the Mobile Unpacked event in New York on March 14, but in the meantime, we have some benchmark scores to salivate over. Topping Rightware's Browsermark 2.0 benchmark is a listing for the Samsung GT-I9500, believed to be the codename for the Galaxy S IV, and it looks to be a scorching fast device.

Conan O'Brien Reviews Tomb Raider

As if it needs said, this isn't your typical review.

Square Enix is planning to release a new Tomb Raider game on March 5, 2013 for the PlayStaton 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows, which will be the first in the franchise to receive an "M" (Mature) rating. In another first, the new Tomb Raider title will make use of AMD's TressFX Hair technology, resulting in the most realistic hair in a video game you've seen to date. Should you rush out and buy it? To help you make that decision (or, more accurately, to provide a few laughs), talk show host Conan O'Brien reviewed the upcoming title.

Internet Explorer 10 delivers a 20 percent increase in real-world site performance versus IE9, Microsoft says.

Microsoft may have taken its sweet time porting Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) over to Windows 7, but it's finally finished and ready for mass consumption. IE10 is available to download worldwide in 95 languages, with Microsoft planning to auto-update Windows 7 customers to its latest browser in the coming weeks, starting today with customers running the IE10 Release Preview.

Boy oh boy, with the free promotions out there adding up, it's starting to look like if you paid for Far Cry 3, you're doing it wrong. Far Cry 3 was featured in AMD's "Never Settle" game bundles, Samsung was giving it away with the purchase of its 840 Series solid state drives (SSDs) during Cyber Monday, and now OCZ is working the free Far Cry 3 promotion with the purchase of select Vector SSDs.

A Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition laptop with a Full HD 1080p display starts at $1,550.

Dell this week announced that its XPS Developer Edition laptop is now equipped with a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) resolution display, upgraded from 1366x768. The upgraded panel is shipping to customers in the United States and now runs $1,550. Starting next week, Dell will begin offering the upgrade model to select countries in Europe, like the U.K., France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

It's no easy task to gauge the impact Windows 8 is having on the industry, in part because the industry is changing. The traditional desktop is taking a backseat in popularity to mobile form factors, like notebooks, tablets, and hybrids. Windows 8, as you know, is an attempt to bring all these devices together, along with smartphones, under a unified user interface. Is Microsoft happy with its strategy up to this point?
