Nvidia Releases GeForce 314.07 WHQL Drivers Tuned for Crysis 3

Nvidia's latest drivers boost performance by up to 65 percent, the GPU maker claims.

Today's a monumental day for gamers, You have the release of Nvidia's GeForce Titan graphics card, Crysis 3 is finally here, and related to them both, Nvidia has made available new WHQL drivers optimized for the aforementioned game, along with Far Cry 3, Assassin's Creed 3, and other popular titles. If you're planning to pick up Crysis 3, Nvidia says its new GeForce 314.07 drivers will improve single-GPU and multi-GPU performance by up to 4.7 percent and 65 percent, respectively.

Security firm discovered exploit capable of bypassing Adobe Reader sandbox last week

Last year was a pretty decent one for Adobe Reader as it relinquished the dubious honor of being the most exploited software (as ranked by Kaspersky Lab) to Oracle’s Java. But the fact is it is still very popular among malware authors. For instance, last week security firm FireEye discovered an exploit capable of bypassing the software’s sandbox. Thankfully, Adobe, which wasted little time in confirming the zero-day exploit, expects to have a patch ready this week.

You could almost see this one coming from an Internet mile away, which won't come as much consolation to those invested in the service, but Twitter is pulling the plug on Posterous on April 30, 2013. First launched in 2008, the Posterous blogging service was acquired by Twitter in March of last year, and at the time, users were told it would stay up and running. And it did, for a little while, anyway.

Windows 8 and Steve Ballmer

Windows 8 customers can look forward to additional features as part of a new rapid iteration initiative at Microsoft.

A February 15th job posting by Microsoft has all but confirmed the existence of “Windows Blue”, and the role it will play in improving the Core Windows 8 experience. According to the listing, Microsoft is looking for individuals willing to work on the centerpiece of its new Windows UI, and the additional verbiage surrounding the qualifications suggest they are referring to the new start screen interface.

Microsoft hopes you’ll choose its subscription based version of Office over the severely gimped retail edition.

Windows and Office make up the lion’s share of Microsoft’s revenues, so when everybody’s favorite “devices and services” company makes decisions that fundamentally alter its business model, people stop and take notice. Changes to Office 2013’s licensing terms might not sound all that interesting at first glance, however, they almost certainly hint at the future Microsoft is preparing for.

Opera Software Scoops Up Mobile Browser Rival Skyfire Labs

Performance based earn-out payments over the next three years could make this deal worth $155 million.

Opera Software today announced that it has acquired Skyfire Labs, a rival in the mobile browser space, in a deal that could be worth as much $155 million when all the checks are written. The Norwegian browser maker agreed to pay $50 million in cash and stocks upfront (including $8 million in cash on the Skyfire balance sheet), and will also make performance based earn-out payments over the next three years that could ultimately value the deal at $155 million.

Nearly 7 Out of 10 Smartphones are Rocking Android

Android is by far the most popular smartphone platform on the planet, according to data by the IDC.

You can't really call it a smartphone battle royale when the only armies on the battlefield are Android and iOS. Google's open source platform closed out 2012 with a 70.1 percent share of the global smartphone market by way of 159.8 million handset shipments, making it by far the most popular platform. Next in line is iOS (iPhone), a distant second with 47.8 million iPhone sales to claim a 21 percent share of the market. Together, the two platforms accounted for just over 9 out of every 10 smartphones sold last year.

Steam for Linux Client Now Available to Download

To celebrate the release of Steam for Linux, over 50 titles are now 50-75 percent off.

After lots of talk and months of beta testing, a Steam client for Linux is now available, Valve announced today. Could this be the beginning of a new era in gaming? It's far too early to know for sure, though Valve's Gabe Newell has let it be known in no uncertain terms that he's not happy with the direction Microsoft has taken its Windows platform, which ultimately led to Valve fast-tracking its Steam client for Linux.

Slacker relaunches with a brand new look and support for BlackBerry 10.

Facing stiff competition from the likes of Pandora and Spotify, popular streaming music service Slacker just reinvented itself with a new look and simplified interface. Its name stays the same, but that's about all you'll recognize (visually) following a major facelift that's supposed to make it easier to discover music with highlighted stations, personalized picks, and exclusive content from Slacker's "expert curators."

Presto Change-o, Opera Browser Shifting to Webkit Engine

Opera is pulling its Presto browser engine and replacing it with WebKit.

Opera Software today put the world on notice that its Presto rendering engine will be making a disappearing act. Going forward, Opera will make a "gradual transition" to WebKit, as well as Chromium, for just about every upcoming browser release for smartphones and computers, the Norwegian browser maker announced today. The engine replacement was mentioned as an aside to the fact that Opera's collection of browsers across all products now boast 300 million users.
