Even as rivals opt for higher res displays, Gigabyte sticks to full HD
When Nvidia launched its latest GeForce GTX 800M Series GPUs last month, Gigabyte wasted little time in announcing an entire lineup of gaming notebooks built around the new mobile graphics cards. Maximum PC’s Jimmy Thang found Gigabyte parading some of the new notebooks at PAX East.
Tim Sweeney confirms there's interest in porting Unreal Engine 4 to Windows Phone and RT
When the time is right, Epic will make its Unreal Engine 4 platform available on Windows Phone and Windows RT. Exactly when that time will be is still up in the air, but thanks to a forum post in which Epic co-founder and CEO Tim Sweeney responded to a user question, we at least know it's something the company is both interested in and has been working towards to some degree.
A gaming mouse that plays nice on different surfaces
Logitech just expanded its popular G line of gaming mice with the G502 Proteus Core, a tunable mouse for gamers that brings a 12,000 DPI sensor to the fire fight. What's unique about the G502 Proteus Core is that it allows you to calibrate the sensor against a gaming surface's unique physical and reflective characteristics, after which it will reconfigure itself for optimal performance.
Today is a busy one for Nvidia. In addition to launching new beta drivers intended to steal some thunder away from AMD's Mantle API, Nvidia upgraded its GeForce Experience platform to version 2.0. The new release is described as a "major update" to the software that's been installed on 35 million PCs to date, and among the new features is ShadowPlay support for GeForce GTX notebooks.
AOC has put a target on gamers with its new 24-inch monitor (G2460PQU) that offers a fast 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time to ensure lag-free and smooth gaming. It sports a Full HD 1080p (1920x1080) resolution, has four USB 2.0 ports (including a fast charging port), and ample connectivity options that include VGA, Dual Link DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort outputs.
Razer gave thin and light gaming a major kick in the pants when it introduced its Blade laptop last year. It earned a 9 verdict (and our respect) in our review of the $2,000 model, which offered up impressive gaming performance in a package measuring just 13.6 inches by 9.3 inches by 0.66 inches (that's 0.05 inches thinner than a dime when you stand it up) and weighing 4.1 pounds. This year's refresh upgrades the 14-inch QHD+ territory (3200x1800), so what do you do with 'old' models? Apparently you try offloading them on students for a 20 percent discount.
OTA update adds new and enhanced features to Nvidia's Shield handheld
Owners of Nvidia's Shield console are in for a treat. On April 2, Nvidia will begin rolling out an over-the-air (OTA) update that upgrades the device's Android platform to Android 4.4.2 KitKat, though that's not the only feature upgrade. It also adds a bunch of GameStream enhancements, including some beta goodies such as notebook support, Wake on LAN, and remote login support, which will allow users to log into a locked PC remotely from Shield.
MSI just took a steamroller to its gaming laptop division and the result is a new series of notebooks that pack a punch in a small frame. In fact, we'd forgive MSI if it decided to call its new laptops the Bruce Lee line, though instead it with "GS Series," which consists of a pair of 15.6-inch GS60 Ghost laptops and a 17.3-inch GS70 Stealth notebook, all equipped with gaming hardware and each one less than an inch thick.
The Oculus VR development team has announced at GDC the Rift Development Kit 2. The upgraded device implements features from the Crystal Cove prototype, which was unveiled at CES this year, such as the low persistence OLED display rather than the original’s LED display.
In 2012, taking a leaf out of the mobile phone carriers’ book, Microsoft began offering a 4GB Xbox 360 console, a Kinect motion sensing camera and an Xbox LIVE Gold membership for just $99 to those willing to commit themselves to a $15-per-month two-year contract. The company, it has now emerged, quietly pulled the plug on that experiment a while back.
