Oculus making steady progress on road to consumer Rift
At its two-day Oculus Connect developer conference in Los Angeles this week, Facebook-owned Oculus VR introduced a new, improved version of its Rift virtual reality head mounted display (HMD). Called Crescent Bay, this latest prototype packs a number of improvements over the DK2 model. These improvements, the company says, are enough to ensure a level of immersion “that’s impossible to achieve with DK2.”
Runs Windows 8.1 but boots straight into Steam’s Big Picture Mode
Syber, a division of California-based boutique system builder CyberPowerPC, has announced an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980-packing gaming PC that boots directly into Steam’s Big Picture Mode. The Syber Vapor Extreme, as the machine is called, is not an altogether new product, but the latest addition to an upcoming line of Windows 8.1-based gaming consoles the company unveiled at E3 2014 back in June.

Twitch, the popular videogame streaming site recently acquired by Amazon, is being used to propagate malware that specifically targets Steam users, security firm F-Secure revealed in a blog post Friday. Gullible Steam users are being lured into clicking a malicious link contained in bot-sent raffle invites on Twitch that promise them the opportunity to win such prizes as Counter-Strike: Global Offensive items. On the other side of that link, there is usually a Java program asking for some basic personal info, a congratulatory message, a malicious Windows binary file, and an empty Steam wallet.

Microsoft’s rumored acquisition of Sweden-based Minecraft developer Mojang could be worth as much as $2.5 billion, according to a Reuters report published Friday. This is considerably higher than the $2 billion figure reported by the Wall Street Journal, which was the first news outlet to claim that such a deal was in the works when it published a report, citing “a person with knowledge of the matter,” on Tuesday.

Digital Storm today unveiled its Bolt II Battle Box Titan Z Special Edition, which is a specially priced Bolt II small form factor (SFF) rig wielding a dual-GPU Nvidia GeForce GTX Titan Z graphics card. In addition to adding a Titan Z, Digital Storm went back to the drawing board and redesigned the Bolt II to accommodate a new Hardline Cooling System consisting of a 240mm radiator, pump, and "stunning" acrylic tubing with yellow coolant.
At its “30 Year of Gaming and Graphics” event, which the company broadcast live via Twitch on Saturday, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced the addition of a new graphics card to its Radeon R9 family. While the Radeon R9 285 is very close to its predecessor, the R9 280, in terms of specs, the new card is built around the company’s new Tonga Pro GPU.
