Desktop machines typically come with two or more display outputs right out of the box, but as the world becomes increasingly mobile, finding a way to plug in your extra display’s when using a notebook has always been a challenge. Sometime even if you’re fortunate enough to have a laptop with more than one output, they don’t all work at once. Thankfully Diamond has been hard at work on the problem, and late last week they let us know that their new lineup of USB powered display adapters are ready to ship.

The once popular netbook is now on the verge of extinction.

Say goodbye to the netbook as you know it. In a couple of years, netbooks will virtually disappear from the market place, becoming the first true casualty of the tablet era. Even today there really isn't much of a market for netbooks, a category that was at the height of its popularity just three short years ago. In 2010, it seemed like OEMs were lining our inboxes with new netbooks announcements on a daily basis.

Samsung's Galaxy Mega stretches the boundaries of phablet design.

You better have big pockets if you have any notion of treating Samsung's Galaxy Mega device as a smartphone. It's actually a phablet -- a phone and tablet hybrid -- though even in that category, the Galaxy Mega stands out because of its massive 6.3-inch HD display. That's not a typo; the Galaxy Mega's display is 6.3 inches, or just over half-an-inch smaller than a Nexus 7 or Kindle Fire HD.

A passively cooled Radeon HD 7850 could be the centerpiece of a home theater PC (HTPC).

If you go poking around Facebook long enough, you're apt to run into teaser shots of unreleased products just like we did. Over on one of PowerColor's pages (the company has several), we spied a couple of photos of a passively cooled Radeon HD 7850 graphics card (SCS3), which to the best of our knowledge hasn't been done before. PowerColor didn't post any accompanying specs, though we suspect it will stick with the reference design.

Is there a market for high priced Ultrabooks?

Sometimes you have to throw caution to the wind and hope everything works out, which is exactly what Samsung's doing with its new Series 9 Premium Ultrabook. It's a $1,400 Ultrabook that flies in the face of conventional wisdom suggesting Ultrabooks need to come down in price, not go up. In fact, Samsung's newest model is tagged with a price that's more than twice as high as some of its competitors' models. Is it worth the markup?

Foot-in-mouth disease got the better of Adam Orth.

Today's lesson is to think before you speak, whether it's in person or especially in social media where your words are essentially carved in virtual stone. Lest anyone need reminded of this, just look at how things played out for Adam Orth, now a former creative director at Microsoft Studios. Less than a week after trolling potential Xbox 720 customers on Twitter about always-on consoles and telling them to #dealwithit, Orth is reportedly out of a job and will have to deal with finding employment.

Slumping semiconductor sales may have ended in 2012, IHS iSuppli says.

Stronger than expected growth in the semiconductor market during the fourth quarter of 2012 has research firm IHS iSuppli optimistic that the darkest days are in the past. As iSuppli looks ahead to 2013, it expects the industry to sustain recent growth trends and forecasts revenue will rise by 5.6 percent by the end of the year, "bringing an end to the slump of 2012." That's good news for all players, and especially Qualcomm if it can maintain its momentum.

It's been five years since Roku introduced its first player.

In 2008, the easiest way to stream Netflix to your television without a home theater PC (HTPC) nearby was through a Roku box. For that reason, Roku's first device became known as the Netflix player, because that's really all that it was used for. Things have certainly changed since then. Now five years later, streaming entertainment is big business, and Roku's been there along the way, having just shipped its 5 millionth streaming player in the U.S.

DIY repair gurus will appreciate how easy it is to tear into the Oculus Rift.

Maybe the Oculus Rift headset will take video games to new heights in ways that previous virtual reality (VR) headsets couldn't, or perhaps it will end up another footnote in the history of technology. If it does go the way of the latter, it won't be because the headset is hard to service at home. Just the opposite, as our friends at iFixit found out when they took apart the hardware in their latest teardown.
