The launch of Windows 8 was accompanied by a massive ad campaign.The TV ads sweeping the globe as part of this campaign, the cost of which one report pegged at somewhere between $1.5 billion and 1.8 billion, have one thing in common, in that they all have music from up-and-coming bands at their heart. But Microsoft’s “You and Me Together” Indian TV spot is not merely an amalgam of peppy music, Live Tiles, and, well, people. It stands out for being surprisingly honest about the biggest problem facing Windows 8: consumer skepticism.

Windows 8 hasn’t been the complete train wreck some were predicting, but it also seems clear it wasn’t a run away success either. Microsoft dropped word that it moved over 40 million copies of Windows 8 within the first month, however there has been a great deal of debate on whether or not this actually constitutes a success. It’s approximately the same number of licenses Windows 7 sold during the same launch period, but as you’ve no doubt read us discussing ad nauseum, times have changed. Evidence has surfaced that Microsoft blames OEM’s for sales falling below internal projections, and OEM as you can imagine see things differently.

Dell XPS 13 Laptop, Developer Edition Give Dell credit for wading into open source waters with "Project Sputnik," a pilot program to build a developer solution based on Ubuntu 12.04LTS. After six months of exploration and feedback from testers, Project Sputnik has now landed and is renamed Dell XPS 13 Laptop, Developer Edition. It's a thin and light 13.3-inch Ultrabook powered by Intel's Core i7 3517U processor and driven by Ubuntu, though you could potentially end up paying more versus a similarly spec'd Windows 7 model (with slower processor) or Windows 8 model (with half the storage space). Let's look at the hardware.

Microsoft Surface Pro Generally speaking, guessing games are fun, just not when it comes to having the guess the price or launch details or a highly anticipated product. Good news, then. You can stop wondering how much Microsoft's Surface with Windows 8 Pro (Surface Pro from here on out) tablet will cost or when it launch, because Microsoft revealed both today. Asus Vivobook It's been a month since Windows 8 launched to the public, and in that time, Asus hasn't been particularly impressed with the demand for the touch-friendly OS and devices that are built around it. That evaluation comes as Microsoft announces it sold 40 million Windows 8 licenses during the first month, though there's some conflicting data on exactly how well the OS has been able to penetrate the desktop market.

The reason? Asus has decided to delay U.S. shipments after previously being made available to pre-order on popular e-commerce sites like Amazon and Newegg. Now it's anyone's guess when the hybrid laptop will arrive.

Noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott recently claimed that initial Windows 8 sales were well below Microsoft’s internal projections, prompting many to write obituaries for the operating system. Despite there being every chance of the report being accurate, there is nothing to suggest that Microsoft won’t be able to sell hundreds of millions of Windows 8 copies, like it has done on so many occasions in the past with previous iterations of the OS. So in that spirit, let’s forget the poor critical response or the tepid popular reaction to Windows 8 for a moment and focus on the numbers.

Intel ATOM AMD and Intel have been locked in a CPU arms race for the better part of a decade, but at least for the short term, Intel has turned its focus towards competing with ARM. Consumers have been flocking en-mass to low power mobile devices, and Atom will be the company’s long term strategy to compete on the low end. 2013 will be the year of Clover Trail, however a leaked Intel roadmap is letting us know what we can look forward to in 2014.

Windows 8 Pro Platter Imagine if a car thief walked into a dealership and was handed the keys to a new automobile, no questions asked. That would be too easy, right? Well, that's essentially what Microsoft did with Windows 8 Pro when users went to claim their free copy of the Windows Media Center upgrade. One of the unintentional side effects of applying the upgrade is that it permanently activates Windows 8, Venture Beat reports.
