Microsoft has lowered the minimum resolution requirement for Windows 8 devices

When it comes to tablets, the ferocity of competition seems to be inversely proportional to the screen size. But ignoring smaller form factors is not easy — as was all too obvious when market leader Apple launched the 7.9-inch iPad Mini despite being indisposed to the idea initially. Now, a new development suggests that Microsoft also wants Windows 8 OEMs to join the sub-eight-inch tablet fray.

Yes, we used "Vizio" and "premium" in the same sentence.

Who would have thought that Vizio would make a splash in the PC market, and do so at a time when tablets and smartphones are all the rage? Vizio made its move into PC territory last June by introducing a line of all-in-one systems and Ultrabooks with unibody designs similar in style to Apple's MacBook Air (but at a fraction of the cost), and now it's refreshing its lineup with upgraded features, including touchscreen panels for Windows 8.

A few days after Windows “Blue” Build 9364 leaked onto the Internet, people are still busy dissecting it. Noted Windows bloggers Paul Thurrott and Rafael Rivera, who somehow managed to co-author a 552-page tome on Windows 8 secrets a few months back, are two such curious folks. The duo have discovered some interesting syncing functionality inside the alpha build.

Open source group takes issue with Microsoft's controversial UEFI Secure Boot mechanism.

A Spanish open software group has filed a complaint against Microsoft with the European Union claiming that it's unnecessarily difficult to install Linux on Windows 8 hardware. Hispalinux, which is made up of 8,000 Linux users and developers living in Spain, issued a 14-page complaint regarding Microsoft's UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot technology, which the group calls an "obstruction mechanism."

Updates promise “big improvements”

Microsoft on Monday announced the release of updates to three Windows 8 core apps, as had been rumored earlier this month. The company says that the updated apps will deliver a much improved Windows experience through a combination of performance enhancements and entirely new features.

Microsoft continues to evolve the modern UI

Microsoft has denied for months that Windows Blue even exists, but we finally have proof. A forum post from a Polish tech blog contained links for Windows 8 build 9364, and R27 installed the patch to verify its legitimacy. The consensus seems to be that Build 9364 is an “alpha” version of Blue, and while it might not be entirely feature complete, it certainly gives us a pretty good idea of what Microsoft has in store. We would recommend against installing this build for both legal and stability reasons, however that doesn’t mean you're totally shut out. We’ve compiled a full gallery of screenshots showing off the changes, and so far we have to say things are looking up for the modern UI.

The concept of the desktop PC that folds flat like a tabletop is catching on. HP was first, with its Z1 workstation, but Lenovo brought the technology to consumer all-in-ones with its very sexy IdeaCentre A720. Now Asus has adopted the idea for its new ET2300 series (we reviewed the model ET2300INTI-B022K).

Price cuts for touchscreen laptops running Windows 8 will reportedly be as high as 20 percent.

If you were planning to rush out and purchase a Windows 8 PC this weekend, you may want to hold off for a bit, or least hang onto your receipt in case the model you're interested in receives a discount after the fact. Tami Reller, the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Marketing Officer of Windows at Microsoft, last month admitted in an interview with ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley that first-party Windows 8 apps are far from perfect in their current state. Now the veteran scribe is reporting that updates to first-party apps bundled with Windows 8 might be available much earlier than previously believed.
