Careful not to get Cheetos smudges all over this rodent
Long gone are the days of ugly beige boxes and other eyesores from an era gone by. Today you have an assortment of styles and colorized options for your case and peripherals, and if you really want to, you can color coordinate your setup. We bring this up because Razer dropped us a line to let us know its Taipan mouse for gamers is now available in a white color option.
Mechanical, membrane, and all the Cherry switches explained
So you want to buy a mechanical keyboard, eh? Why is that? Perhaps you’ve heard that they’re the growing rage among gamers and PC enthusiasts – assuming that’s still a “cool” phrase to use. Maybe you’ve gotten your hands on one and, while you’re not quite 100% sure what exactly makes them different from the keyboards you’ve been using, you nevertheless have fallen in love with the mechanical experience. Maybe you have no idea what a mechanical keyboard really is or why it rocks, but you’re interested to find out.
OK, so we don't get a ton of snow out here in San Francisco (see: pretty much none), but we have noticed a fairly massive influx of snow-themed products adorning our lab these past couple of months. As Gordon aptly pointed out a while back, white is the new black, which was the new beige, which...well, we forget the rest of that particular rant.
Point is, white products seem to be cool again, and in the spirit of the holiday season, we thought we'd spotlight some of our favorite alabaster tech products of the last couple of months. Check out the gallery below, and make sure to let us know which products we missed in the comments.
If you will recall, we rather like the R.A.T. line of mice here at Maximum PC. In our recent Dream Machine 2011 build, we used the wireless R.A.T. 9, and the R.A.T. 7 is the only mouse that’s ever received a 10 Kick Ass verdict in the pages of the magazine. From what we’ve heard since then, we didn’t make a mistake with that review—some people snark about the R.A.T.’s over-the-top futuristic design, but nearly everyone who’s actually gamed with one loves it. In fact, when we ran our “Best PC Part I Ever Spent My Hard-Earned Cash On” contest last week, no other piece of hardware got anywhere near as many mentions as the R.A.T., which was featured in 7 entries.
So we were pretty psyched to get our hands on the new version of the R.A.T 7: the Albino. It’s got an enhanced sensor (up to 6,400 DPI, although we’re starting to wonder what sort of person actually needs that much sensitivity), but the real star of the show is the new matte white finish. We’ve taken some pictures so you can see for yourselves, but they don’t really do it justice—every person we’ve showed the mouse to so far has agreed that it’s a very cool look.
Expect a full review of the updated R.A.T. in an upcoming issue of Maximum PC, but for now check out our photos and the official press release below.
At this point, it almost seems silly to bother with releasing a white iPhone 4 device, a strangely elusive color for Apple that, for one reason or another, hasn't yet made it to market. The earliest hint that Apple might be on the verge of releasing a white iPhone 4 was the release of a white iPad 2, seemingly suggesting that whatever issue Apple was having has now been sorted out. However, recent rumors suggest a release later this week.
It was seven months ago to the day that Apple released the GSM version of its iPhone 4, which was supposed to be available in black and white trim. But for whatever reason, Apple hasn't been able to offer its customers the white version in all that time. That might be about to change.
Mac Rumors claims to have received a screenshot from an un-named source showing the white iPhone 4 SKU in Best Buy's database. This was initially reported as an inventory database screenie, but BGR says it's actually a snapshot of Best Buy's Employee Toolkit. The reason this matters is that in-stock dates, which the screenshot shows as February 27, 2011, usually don't represent the launch date.
In any event, it appears that the iPhone 4 in white digs will show up very soon, likely by the end of March.
