Who knew that all you really needed to fight the inevitable zombie apocalypse is a well kept garden filled with a variety of plants and those ever-important sunflowers? It's a survival lesson PopCap Games, a division of Electronic Arts, taught us with its highly addictive Plants vs Zombies title, and lest you forgot the power a green thumb wields, the developer plans to launch a sequel in the first half of 2013.
Electronic Arts' DICE studio has announced plans to release Battlefield 3 Premium Edition in September. The Premium bundle will cost $70 and, as you can guess from the name, comes with a membership to Battlefield Premium, a service that bombards gamers with a bunch of extras, including five themed digital expansion packs and access to DLC before everyone else.
Game developer Valve is preparing what it considers to be a "major update" to the Steam Community, one that will introduce a Game Hub feature to each and every game. The Hubs will highlight the most popular user-created screenshots, videos, and Steam Workshop items as rated by the community, while also populating them with game related news, discussions, and comments.
Paul Steed, a veteran videogame artist perhaps best known for his 3D modeling work at id Software where he worked on the Quake and Doom series, passed away over the weekend, The Jace Hall Show announced. Details of his death are unknown at this time, though that of his sometimes controversial career and his contributions to the gaming industry are well documented.
Sennheiser needs no introduction in the audio space, so we'll skip right to the chase and share the fact that Sennheiser has just added a pair of headsets to its PC gaming line. The new models include the PC 323D with 7.1 "super-realistic" surround sound, and the PC 310, the latter of which is a more subdued headset aimed at entry-level gamers, with a price tag to boot ($60).
If you're old enough to remember the original Neo Geo, then you probably recall how it brought arcade level gaming into the living room. High tech and expensive, most thirty-something gamers grew up playing on less expensive Nintendo and Sega systems (or a Turbo Grafx 16 if betting on the dark horse), but if you always wished you could have owned a Neo Geo, you're going to get your chance in a few months.
Ouya's Kickstarter campaign has come to a close, though not before raising just shy of $8.6 million in non-refundable funding from backers anxious to see this project through. The $99 Android console struck a chord with gamers and promises to deliver a low-cost entertainment experience to the living room comprised of freemium titles and a wealth of media center and streaming functionality, all from a tiny console about the size of a Rubik's Cube. Oh, and it's already available for pre-order.
Blizzard Entertainment, the company behind the insanely popular World of Warcraft franchise and, more recently, Diablo III, confirmed that it's Battle.net game service suffered a security breach that compromised certain user data. The full extent of the hack attack is still unknown, but at this stage, Blizzard doesn't believe that any financial data was lifted, including credit card info, billing addresses, or real names.
Valve's Gabe Newell appears to have struck a chord with other game developers in his 
Valve is forging ahead with plans to port its Steam distribution platform over to Linux and has even managed to tweak Left 4 Dead 2 to run faster on a 32-bit Ubuntu system than on a Windows 7 machine, but as far as John Carmack is concerned, the real challenge will be getting Linux users to open their wallets. Carmack, as you know, is the founder and technical director of id Software, and also an open source advocate. He's also a realist.
