Microsoft today posted an advance notification of a pair of security bulletins to be released on Patch Tuesday next week, including a "Critical" one that affects Windows and an "Important" one that affects Office. Windows Server 2003, Server 2008, Office XP, office 2003, Office 2007, Office 2004 for Mac, and Office 2008 for Mac are all affected by the bulletins, Microsoft said.
Many wondered if tablets and dedicated eBook readers could coexist, primarily because the former can do everything the latter can do, plus a whole lot more (except read comfortably in direct sunlight). But much lower prices and lighter devices have made sure that eBook readers remain relevant. On top of that, Barnes & Noble appears determined to blur the line between what constitutes a dedicated eReader and a full fledged tablet.
Adobe on Thursday began serving up security updates for Adobe Reader and Acrobat slightly ahead of schedule, but not a moment too soon. The out-of-cycle updates address critical vulnerabilities that are being actively exploited in the wild, enough so that it's drawn the attention of the Department of Homeland Security/US-CERT. Left unpatched, it's possible for remote attackers to execute arbitrary code and take control of an infected system, giving them unfettered access to user data, as well as being able to crash their machine.
Hulu has just released a new version of its Hulu Plus app for the Roku set-top box player. You should automatically receive the update to version 1.9 the next time you launch the Hulu Plus app on Roku, though you can also force the update by opening and exiting the Roku Channel Store. Details of the minor update after the jump.
An upcoming firmware update promises to add more awesomeness to the Boxee Box platform. The update is slated for May 2011, or just one month after the previous firmware upgrade. After that, Boxee says it set a goal to release new firmware "every 3 months or so," with each one introducing "a healthy mix of new and improved functionality together with bug fixes."
Boxee Box owners should be receiving a fairly major firmware update in the next 24 hours, although if you don't want to wait, you can grab the latest release by heading to Settings>System>Update.
The new firmware adds a handful of goodies, such as settings to control de-interlacing and video filters configuration, support for language selection in subtitle/audio, enhancements to browser performance, direct launch of websites when defining the full URL in the search bar, and a few more. Missing from the list, however, is Vudu support.
"The change list is below, but we do have one frustrating bit to share with you. While we've been demoing Vudu without a hitch this week at the show (CES), there's still a few issues the technical team is trying to get to the bottom of. We'll push the app out to you as soon as it's ready and send out an email so you know the moment it goes live," Boxee said in a blog post.
Also included in the update are tons of bug fixes, more than 40 in all, most of which are minor in nature. See the full list here.
ViewSonic's Tegra 2-based G-Tablet didn't roar out of the gates the way the company hoped it would, and instead fell flat on its face. Citing a "manufacturing defect" that adversely affected performance and caused an unusual number of returns, Staples went so far as to pull stock from its store shelves.
According to ViewSonic, the issue isn't a manufacturing defect, per se, but a "user experience [problem] that caused all the returns." Whatever you want to call it, ViewSonic says a fix is on the way.
"We always listen to customers; while they love the hardware, they raised several issues about the user interface," Jeff Volpe, VP and GM for ViewSonic Americas. "As a result, our software partner is releasing an upgrade that will address customer concerns. Along with great performance improvements, customers will have the flexibility to use both a standard Android interface as well as a user-customizable interface which has been significantly enhanced since the product launch."
If you already own a G-Tablet, ViewSonic says you'll receive the update no later than Friday of this week via Wi-Fi. All you'll have to do is accept the request to install the upgrade.
Apple this week released the 10.1.1 update for iTunes which was designed to fix crashing issues, and in an ironic twist, some users report they're unable to open iTunes after applying the update, Apple Insider reports.
Of course, some of you are thinking Apple just went and did you a favor by bricking iTunes, but for those who actually use the program, you may want to avoid the 10.1.1 patch until things get sorted out (in the meantime, check out our recently posted "15 Ways to Make iTunes Rock" article).
Alternately, Apple Insider says several users have been able to resolve the problem by downloading iTunes directly from Apple rather than using the built-in Software Update.
We suppose technically the inability to search through the Netflix streaming catalog on Google TV isn't a flaw, but to us it is. Thankfully we can stop bitching about it now that Google addressed that annoying shortcoming with its first Google TV update since rolling out the platform two months ago, the search giant announced in a blog post.
In addition to search functionality, Google TV viewers can add titles to their DVD queue. In other words, the Netflix app is no longer woefully (and inexplicably) behind the curve, finally catching up to how it's implemented on other home theater devices.
The update also includes a Dual View feature allowing you to watch TV and browse the Web at the same time. As Google explains, maybe you want to "watch Conan while tweeting about him on Twitter," and now you can. There's a remote control app for Android phones with integrated voice search available for download (see video below), and finally the update installs a new movie results page that shows all films associated with the title.
Roku recently rolled out new firmware -- version 2.9 b1509 -- for all models of its popular Roku player. The updated software introduces a handful of changes, including:
1080p support for XR units
Hulu app optimizations for quicker trick play navigation and start of playback
Improved Hulu playback performance on networks with higher latency
The update also addresses a handful of bugs and quirks. For example, Roku says installing the software fixes "a subtle audio playback issue in UFC streaming," and it also squashes a bug that could result in a crash if an app tried to load an image greater than 1280x720.
