Every hero is a villain, every villain a hero. Truth is that even the greatest people in history had at least a hint of the dark side within them.
The path of human progress is paved with tiny innovations. While most technological progress has been barely perceptible throughout the history of human invention, a handful of breakthroughs have radically changed the way humans live in the world. Here are 30 of the most life-changing technologies of all time.
You would think that with all the services Google offers, and in particular its hugely popular search and Gmail services, that Mother Nature would have a beef with all the energy being expended. You'd also be wrong, according to Google, which is making the claim that it's been carbon-neutral since 2007, and even the small amount of energy it does use is offset completely.
As PC users, we're so used to hearing sirens warn that the sky is falling we barely notice the noise anymore. Part of the reason for that is because even when things are bad, they're still pretty good. That's again the case today as market research firm Gartner lowers its PC shipments forecast for 2011, but a closer examination of the numbers shows there's reason to remain confident in the state of PCs.
You wouldn’t rock a puffy jacket in the summer, would you? Of course not! You’d overheat. So why do you let a six inch layer of dust get your graphics card get all hot and bothered? Cleaning out the grime can cool your PC down, but digging out a can of compressed air and cracking open your PC can take some work. For those time-deprived folks who also want a sparkly-clean PC, MSI’s rolling out products with “Dust Removal Technology.”
Here's the deal, you shouldn't ever look at a laser beam head on, especially one built by Wicked Lasers. It's all fun and games until someone goes blind, and that's exactly what will happen if you try and stare directly at the 1W laser dot in the company's new Spyder 3 Krypton. Wicked Lasers says the device is under review by the Guinness World records as the world's brightest handheld laser in the world, and considering it can be seen from space, we have a feeling it will be a short review.
Sharks with lasers are admittedly awesome, but of little practical value. Automobile headlamps, on the other hand, make for a much more worthwhile application, and it looks like BMW will be the first to answer the call. These will ultimately replace LED lighting and bring about several advantages over today's best and brightest headlights.
The bean counters at Ovum, a data monitoring firm located in Australia, crunched a bunch of numbers and determined that the IT services industry is in pretty bad shape, which is putting it nicely. According to Ovum, the value of new contract signings fell to its lowest point in eight years during the second quarter of 2011.
GlobalFoundries and Samsung this week announced plans to extend their collaboration agreement and synchronize global semiconductor fabrication facilities to build high performance, low leakage 28nm chips based on High-K Metal Gate (HKMG) technology. The technology takes aim at mobile applications and, according to Samsung, begins to blur the line between mobile and desktop silicon.
