Starting today, students with a qualifying email address can try Office 365 for half a year.

Between books, tuition, and booze, going to college is an expensive proposition. It's understandable, then, if students aren't particularly anxious to sign up for a monthly subscription fee for Office 365, Microsoft's cloud-based productivity suite, but when you start throwing around the world "free," it's a good way to get their attention. And so it goes, Microsoft today is offering to let students with a qualifying .edu email address try out Office 365 for an entire semester.

Offer to be available to students in 50 countries

With the introductory Windows 8 upgrade discount offer set to expire today, now is a good time to snag a $40 Windows 8 Pro upgrade license for those who have a favorable opinion of the operating system and are considering an upgrade. Because once normal Windows 8 update pricing takes effect tomorrow, you will have to shell out as much as $199 for an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro or $119 if you opt for the Windows 8 upgrade edition. But U.S. students and faculty members interested in Windows 8 don’t need to worry all that much about the pricing reset, as Microsoftj has announced a special discount offer exclusively for them.

WebcamGate: Lower Merion District Escapes Criminal Charges

The Lower Merion School District in Ardmore, PA, and its employees might have just gotten away with murder. The Feds have decided against prosecuting school officials for spying on students and their families by remotely activating Webcams on school-provided notebooks, according to an Associated Press report. School officials have escaped criminal charges as the investigators found no criminal intent on their part.

The district avowedly captured 56,000 images as part of its anti-theft efforts. While it has every reason to heave a sigh of relief, it is still not time for full-scale festivities as a case filed by a student's family in February is still pending before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

One of These Playable Indie Games May be the Next Portal

The Independent Games Festival just went down, and as usual, the Student Showcase is knocking everyone’s socks off. The Student Showcase has a history of producing some amazing stuff. In fact, Valve’s uber-successful Portal was a product of the Student Showcase in 2006. Several more recent entries are about to be released on WiiWare and the Xbox Live Arcade.

The ten winners are certainly upholding the tradition of excellence in the Student Showcase. If only you could sit down and experience them now... good news, you can. Only one of the ten is not yet available for public play, but even it should be out soon.

There’s something for every taste here. For the casual gamer there’s “Paper Cakes, where the player must sketch a path for their avatar to reach the goal. Paper Cakes is especially great if you have a Wacom tablet. If you fancy yourself the artsy type, try “Dreamside Maroon” and grow a vine to the moon. Want something fast paced? Microsoft's latest promotion adds one more reason why it's a good idea to stay in school. How does Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade) for 30 bucks sound? That sounds like a smokin' hot deal to us, and if you're a student at a qualifying college or university, you can pounce on this pricing.

According to Microsoft's terms and conditions, the Windows 7 Academic Offer runs until January 3rd, 2010, although there's a small chance Digital River, the e-commerce site driving the promo, could extend the offer. If eligible, students can choose between Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional, though it's unclear how much extra Professional runs.

These are download versions, though for $13, Microsoft says it will send you a disk.
