Buy a Chromebook, get 1TB of cloud storage for two years
It's getting to be all-out warfare in the low-cost computing market. In response to the growing interest in cheap Chromebooks, Intel and Microsoft have been working together to push sub-$200 Windows laptops into the market place through its hardware partners. That's caused Chromebooks to come down in price as well, but it isn't stopping there. Google today announced that new Chromebook buyers can get 1TB of Google Drive cloud storage for two years at no additional cost.
OCZ may have learned a lesson from its competitors that swapping NAND flash memory in an existing solid state drive line tends to irritate customers. Rather than go that route with its Vertex 460 line and risk a public outcry, OCZ this week announced its new Vertex 460A SSD family using newer A19 Multi-Level Cell (MLC) NAND flash memory chips provided by its parent company, Toshiba.
Security's become a sensitive subject ever since former NSA contractor Edward Snowden blew the whistle on the U.S. government's spying shenanigans, and if you don't fancy wearing a tinfoil hat, you might be interested in Patriot Memory's latest storage device. To begin with, Patriot's new Supersonic Bolt XT flash drive family boasts built-in FIPS 197 compliant hardware-based 256-bit AES data encryption.
Hey, if Ubisoft and Samsung want to start handing out free games, we'll all for it. In this case, the free title is Assassin's Creed Unity, which you're eligible to receive if you purchase a Samsung U28D590D (UD590) 4K Ultra HD monitor or a Samsung 850 Pro solid state drive (256GB, 512GB, or 1TB) from a participating retailer -- don't worry, there are several to choose from.
Western Digital this week announced the expansion of its WD Purple line of 3.5-inch hard drives to include a 6TB capacity model. The Purple family of HDDs are intended for video surveillance chores and include some exclusive technologies that make them better suited than competing drives, including AllFrame (reduces video frame loss, improves playback, and increases the number of drive bays supported) and IntelliSeek (calculates the optimum seek speeds for system workloads to lower power consumption and reduce noise and vibration).
Your Office 365 subscription just became a better deal than it was yesterday. That's because Microsoft just announced that all Office 365 subscribers are being upgraded from 1TB of OneDrive cloud storage to unlimited space. The unlimited upgrade started rolling out today to Office 365 Home, Personal, and University customers, and will continue over the coming months and into 2015 to include Business customers as well.
Today's high performance SATA 6Gbps solid state drives top out at around 590MB/s for read and write transfers. If you need something faster, you can slap a pair in a RAID 0 configuration, or switch over to PCI-Express. G.Skill chose both with its new Phoenix Blaze Series. Kicking off G.Skill's Phoenix Blade line is a 480GB PCIe SSD equipped with four LSI SF-2281 SSD controllers in a RAID 0 setup.
The reason we're constantly preaching the merits of maintaining multiple backups -- especially when it comes to mission critical files -- is because your data is never safe, no matter where you put it. That includes the cloud. As a sobering reminder of this, Dropbox has been sending out letters to some of its users alerting them to a Selective Sync bug that inadvertently deleted their data.
We don't know if it's something in the Starbucks lattes in Silicon Valley or what, but all of a sudden companies are either announcing breakups or exploring whether or not to spin-off a division. Auction site eBay recently announced that it plans to give Paypal a set of wings and let it fly solo, and then Hewlett-Packard decided that it too was ready for a split (between its PC and printer businesses). Now there's talk that Symantec is considering a breakup as well.
For those of you who needed another solid state drive line to consider for your next upgrade, Mushkin today added the Chronos G2 series to its family of SSDs. Part of the pitch from Mushkin is that they're designed and assembled in the U.S., while the other selling point is that the Chronos G2 line offers a high level of performance for users working with a limited budget.
