Valve's Newell believes Apple could roll over the console guys, if it really wanted to.

In this week's edition of "Gabe Newell Said What?," the co-founder and managing director of Valve waxed insightful on the hurdles set before the much anticipated Steam Box, the biggest of which might be trying to overcome Apple's presence in the living room. As you're likely aware, Newell once famously called the release of Windows 8 a "catastrophe for everyone in the PC space," and that it would cause top-tier OEMs to exit the market. That's part of the reason why Valve is forging ahead with a so-called Steam Box in the first place, but it's not Microsoft (or Sony) that poses the biggest threat.

3DMark for Windows 8 Scheduled to Launch February 4

There will be four different versions of 3DMark, one each for Windows, Windows RT, Android, and iOS.

Futuremark is nearly finished putting the finishing touches on its new 3DMark benchmark for Windows, which it plans to release on Monday, February 4. It will be one of four different versions, as Futuremark is planning to launch 3DMark builds for Windows (including Windows 8), Windows RT (for ARM-based systems), Android, and iOS. Releases dates for the other three versions are not yet known at this time.

Windows 8 Market Share Rises to 2.2 Percent, Windows 7 Down Slightly

As Windows 8 rises, Windows 7 loses market share for the first time since its launch.

After a little more than three months, Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system is installed on 2.26 percent of all desktops, according to market share data provided by Net Applications. Windows 8, which was released to the general public on October 26, 2012, has seen a slow but steady rise, grabbing a 1.09 percent share of the desktop market by the end of November and 1.72 percent at the end of December.

EA's Madden NFL franchise has correctly picked the Super Bowl winner seven out of the past nine times.

We don't buy into the notion that video games lead to violence, but saying the Baltimore Ravens will beat the San Francisco 49ers in the the Super Bowl? Well, in Silicon Valley, those are fighting words. Be that as it may, EA's Madden NFL 13 game, powered by an Xbox 360 console, predicted the Ravens will emerge victorious over the 49ers in a thrilling 27-24 contest, proving that they were a team of destiny.

Research In Motion: Just Call Us BlackBerry

The company formerly known as Research In Motion launched its BlackBerry 10 platform today.

Research In Motion (RIM) doesn't want you to call it by its former name, anymore. RIM will now operate under the name "BlackBerry," the company announced today during a much anticipated press event. In addition to a name change, RIM BlackBerry unveiled its newest mobile computing platform, BlackBerry 10, along with two phones, the Q10 with a physical keyboard and Z10 with just a touchscreen.

The latest version of XBMC takes the media center platform to a whole new level of awesome.

XBMC 12.0, codenamed "Frodo," is now available for public consumption, though we must warn you that nergasms are likely to occur. Just peeking at the list of new features is enough to set one off, and we fully understand why the developers confidently state this latest release will "blow you away." HD audio support, including DTS-MA and Dolby True-HD? Check. PVR support? Check that too. Support for Raspberry Pi and Android? We need more checks.

Microsoft's Cloud Oriented Office 365 Home Premium Touches Ground

Office 365 ushers in an era of subscription billing.

After months of beta testing, Microsoft on Tuesday announced the worldwide availability of Office 365 Home Premium. It's a departure from previous versions of Office, and while Microsoft likes to refer to Windows 8 as a reimagining of Windows, Office 365 is a "reinvention" of Redmond's popular Office product line for consumers. Unlike previous versions, Office 365 is a cloud-service.

Bill Gates feels confident in Microsoft’s new Direction, and has no desire to return as CEO.

Okay so he might be just the tiniest bit biased, but Bill Gates claims Windows 8 and the Surface tablet have “done well”. His answer was a response to a CNBC interview question with regards to the future of his company, and if he would ever consider reclaiming his CEO title from Steve Ballmer. According to Gates, Windows 8 and the Surface were both developed without his guidance, and as a result he feels the company is doing just fine without him.

H.265 Video Codec Gets The ITU Seal of Approval

Twice the pixels, or half the bandwidth. Sounds like a good deal to us.

H.265 has been on our radar since early 2012, but as of today it has passed an important milestone. The ITU has given the new codec its official approval, paving the way for devices and software to start implementing the standard as they see fit. H.265 (also known as High Efficiency Video Coding) will cut the bandwidth requirements for streaming video in half, or for the Maximum PC crowd, double the amount data you can fit in the same sized container.
