It's easy to get lazy towards the end of the work week as we look forward to the weekend, but not so at Micron. Rather than check out early, Micron today announced the introduction of a monolithic 8Gb DDR3 SDRAM component based on the company's latest-generation 25nm DRAM manufacturing process. According to Micron, the addition of an 8Gb monolithic component will enable cost-effective, high-capacity solutions optimized for large-scale, data-intensive workloads.
The ever-volatile DRAM market continues to battle its share of supply and demand issues, the latest of which could affect smartphones and other gadgets with embedded RAM. Citing un-named industry sources, DigiTimes says prices for 512Mbit DDR, which are used for multi-chip package (MCP) memory products found mainly in mobile handsets, have shot up over 40 percent the past month due to tight supply.
The average spot price for 512Mb (64Mbitx8) SDRAM has gone from $1.53 a month ago to over $2.20 currently, the sources said. But mobile handsets aren't the only sector being affected.
Demand for 64Mb and 32Mb DDR memory in DVD players, hard drives, consumer electronics, and even home appliances have started to exceed supply.
Part of the reason for the widespread supply and demand issues can be traced to Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC)'s withdrawal from the SDRAM foundry business. Prior to discontinuing the line earlier this year, SMIC used to allocate capacity of around 20,000 wafers for production of SDRAM chips.
Microsoft must surely be hoping to raise the bar higher with its Windows 7 OS. However, a hacker is more interested in figuring out the lowest depths Windows 7 can plunge to. Whatever you believe you know about the bare minimum specs required to run Windows 7 may actually be exaggerated, greatly exaggerated. A hacker on the Windows Club’s forum, who is only known by his cyber pseudonym hackerman1, has done the unthinkable by successfully installing and running Windows 7 on a Pentium II system. The rig boasts a primeval 266 MHz Pentium II processor, 96 MB of SDRAM memory and a 4 MB graphics card. Hackerman1 now wants to repeat the feat using a 166 MHz Pentium I processor and 1 MB video card.
Rambus, the technology company turned responsible for RDRAM has filed suit against Nvidia claiming that they violated 17 of its memory patents. Rambus’ lawsuit alleges that at least six of Nvidia's product lines infringe the Rambus patents including chip sets, graphics processors and applications processors. They ask for an injunction that would prevent Nvidia from selling the products as well as damages.
Tom Lavelle, senior vice president and general counsel at Rambus was quoted as saying, "For more than six years, we have diligently attempted to negotiate a licensing agreement with Nvidia, but our good faith efforts have been to no avail," he adds, "We are left with no other recourse than litigation to protect and seek fair compensation for the use of our patented inventions,".
Can you smell the bull? I better get my rubber boots it’s getting thick. His own statement shows this to be an attempt to force Nvidia to cough up something to make Rambus go away and they haven't been interested. Nvidia has yet to comment on the suit.
