Remember Samsung's 470 SSD series? That marked Samsung's first foray into the retail SSD market, and we rated the 256GB version a solid 8 for its competitive performance. Representing another first for Samsung, meet the PM830, the only SATA 6Gbps SSD in Samsung's stable and offered in up to 512GB of capacity.
The RocketRAID 620 series has SATA 3.0 host adapters with a RAID 5 capability (backward compatible with SATA 3 Gb/s and 1.5 Gb/s). It’s got a PCI-Express 2.0 x1 host interface (compatible with PCI-Express 1.0), and it offers optimized storage performance and redundancy with RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, and JBOD.
The RocketRAID will allow hot plug and hot swap of storage devices, and has OCE/ORLM to expand storage capacity or migrate to different RAID levels.
HighPoint is offering two cards: the RocketRaid 620, with a price of $69.99, and the RocketRAID 622, with a price of $79.99. The 620 will come with SATA connectors, the 622 with eSATA connectors. Both cards are expected to ship this month.
SATA 3.0 will double transfer speeds to 6Gbps, and will be fully backwards compatible with earlier versions of SATA. And, for those of you looking forward, you’ll enjoy the new streaming commands for isochronous data transfers between audio and video applications, and the Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector for smaller 1.8-inch drives.
It’s expected that there will be demonstrations of SATA 3.0 at Computex, but there’s no real word on how long it’ll take for this technology to make its way to the masses.
