Samsung is kind of a big deal. In addition to manufacturing everything from tablets to televisions to turbines, the Korean giant is one of the world’s largest producers of DRAM and NAND flash memory, and it has long provided SSDs to OEMs and systems integrators. Samsung entered the retail SSD market in late 2010, with its 470 Series SSD delivering performance on par with the first-gen SandForce drives that owned the top end of the market. It’s now late 2011, and the goalposts have shifted. Samsung’s Series 830 drive boasts a slimmer look, a refreshed controller, and a 6Gb/s SATA interface. Can the new part compete with today’s top SSDs?
This is fast turning out to be world storage week, or so it seems. A day after Seagate upped the hard drive capacity ante with its ultra-capacious 4TB FreeAgent GoFlex Desk external hard drive, Dell has begun offering the Precision M6600 and M4600 mobile workstations it launched back in May with the option of 512GB SATA3 Mobility SSDs, “giving users lightning quick 500MB/s read and 300MB/s write times.” What’s more, those interested in the M6600 now have the option of configuring the machine with more than 1TB of SATA III solid-state storage.
If you're talking music, mashups are so, like, 2005. To be honest, we never really got into mixing Disturbed with the Backstreet Boys to begin with. But when you start talking data transfer specification mashups our ears start to perk up. Our sonic receptors are standing at full attention today, after the Serial ATA International Organization announced the development of a new specification that combines the SATA infrastructure with the PCIe interface to form a Voltron-like super-spec.
Market research nerds predict that by the end of 2012, solid state drive pricing will have fallen to $1 per gigabyte. We're not quite there yet, but in the meantime, Corsair just launched its new Force Series 3 SSDs, a new line of drives the company claims offers SATA 3 performance for near SATA 2 pricing. Or in other words, the Force Series 3 line represents an almost free performance gain over last gen SSDs.
