Taken together, the international Samsung Galaxy S and the US variants became the best-selling Android handsets of 2010. Millions of the devices were sold, but now Samsung is leaving a lump of coal in many a stocking this holiday season with the announcement that there will be no update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich for the Galaxy S phones.
Seagate on Monday officially closed the deal to acquire the hard disk drive (HDD) business of Samsung for $1.4 billion, a transaction that was first announced in April 2011. Under terms of the agreement, Seagate gains select elements of Samsung's HDD division, including assets, infrastructure, and employees. Among the assets is Samsung's M8 product line of high-capacity, 2.5-inch HDDs.
Perhaps the folks at Verizon have a sick sense of humor; they enjoy letting things hang out there until the last possible minute. Verizon announced just minutes ago that the long-awaited Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be available tomorrow, December 15th for $299 on-contract. This comes after multiple rumors of delays and more speculation than you can shake a phone at.
It’s shaping up to be a festive holiday season for Samsung! We’ve already told you that the company sold a gargantuan 300 million handsets through the first 11 months of the year, a number that no doubt brings a smile to the face of Samsung higher-ups and stock holders alike. And hey, as if that wasn’t good enough, a new report claims that Samsung took “a record share of global DRAM” in the third quarter. Time to break out the bubbly! The joy extends to consumers, too, since DRAM just continues getting cheaper and cheaper.
Try as it might, Apple and its legal team haven't been able to stop Samsung's meteoric rise in the mobile handset market. For the first time in Samsung's history, the company achieved mobile handset sales of more than 300 million units, and there's still nearly three weeks left in the year. No one expected Samsung to be as successful as it has in the mobile phone market, not even Samsung itself, which had set a lower target earlier in the year.
For every minute that goes by, Samsung sells 120 television sets. That's assuming Samsung's rate of sales is the same as it was in November, a record month for the world's largest supplier of TVs. Samsung said it sold 5.7 million TVs last month, up from 5 million in October and buoyed by a jump in U.S. sales during Thanksgiving weekend.
Sharp, Samsung, and half a dozen other liquid crystal display (LCD) panel makers may have colluded to fix prices earlier in the decade, according to claims brought on by a class action lawsuit. The display makers agreed to settle the case for a combined $388 million, of which Sharp, Japan's largest panel maker, will fork over $105 million.
Shares of Samsung stock are up on Monday after Apple's request to ban U.S. sales of the company's Galaxy products were rejected. Apple has been successful in winning injunctions in foreign countries, in which the Cupertino outfit has accused Samsung of infringing on several of its patents. The U.S. ruling isn't a total win in Samsung's favor, it just means means the company can continue to sell Galaxy smartphones and tablets stateside while the mobile behemoths duke it out in court.
Have you heard about that nasty little bit of software called Carrier IQ? A security researcher by the name of Trevor Eckhart discovered the mysterious software running on his Android phone earlier this month, dug deeper into things, and found Carrier IQ, a monitoring program that comes preinstalled on several phones, tracks all kinds of data – including HTTP requests, GPS location and app usage information – and in many cases, can’t be turned off. Millions of phones are affected. Carrier IQ’s been found on phones from Samsung, HTC and Apple– but wireless carriers could be the real force behind the rootkit-like software.

The storage maker just kicked off volume production of its Mini-Serial ATA (mSATA) solid state drives (SSDs) designed for all kinds of ultra-slim notebooks, and in particular Ultrabooks.
