The busiest shopping day of the year, Black Friday, has come and gone, but fear not. Even though Black Friday is officially over, many of the deals still remain, and even more are just getting started. On top of it all, Cyber Monday 2012 is here!

Microsoft wanted us all to believe Windows 8 would spark a new wave of consumer upgrades, and finally put to rest all the doom and gloom stories about declining PC sales. Skeptics were skeptical (surprise), but at least a few of these naysayers have been proven right. Windows 8 hasn’t lit the PC world on fire, but can we all at least agree it’s just a bit too early to say Windows 8 is a flop? Blogs from around the web pounced on the Supersite’s headline declaring Windows 8 a failure, but the story here is much more complicated.
Intel, the world's largest semiconductor player, is susceptible to market conditions just like every other company, and right now PC sales are in a slump. Serving up chips to the PC market is Intel's bread and butter, so it strives or struggles at a similar clip, though it's all relative. What do we mean? Well, Intel said it generated $13.5 billion revenue during the third quarter, which is an obscene amount of money, and even a little better than analysts were expecting, but only after the chip maker lowered its Q3 sales forecast.
Western Digital and Seagate command over 90 percent of the traditional hard drive market, so when one of these companies pipes up with concerns, everyone stops and takes note. According to Seagate, first-quarter revenues are likely to be 5 to 7 percent lower than its previous forecast of $4 billion, and it makes us wonder if it’s the start of a new trend.

Intel, the world's largest semiconductor maker, took a mighty big chisel to its third-quarter sales forecast and chipped off about a billion dollars due to "softness in the enterprise PC segment" and "weaker than expected demand in a challenging macroeconomic environment." The chipmaker had previously forecast third-quarter sales to be anywhere from $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion, but now says that $12.9 billion to $13.5 billion is a more realistic target.
There was a time when PCs practically sold themselves, but that was before everyone started crowing about the tough economic landscape and other factors that, as Dell explains, makes growing a PC business "challenging," a word the OEM used when describing its second quarter financial results. Amid slumping sales and declining profits, Dell said it's in the process of transforming its business with a clear strategy focused on long-term results.
Intel has launched a new generation of processors, PC markers have released a slew of new machines, and yet nobody is buying them. New data from Gartner and IDC are suggesting that OEM’s continue to struggle in the second quarter to sell new machines, even though refreshed designs traditionally help kick start sales. PC makers shipped around 87.1 million PCs this quarter, which when compared to last year’s 87.2 million represents a concerning trend for investors who expect constant growth. Both analyst firms have been on the hunt for a reason why, and seem to agree that consumers are waiting for….. Windows 8?
Despite all the media interest (and in spite of all the OEM heartache) siwrling around the Surface tablet, Microsoft doesn't expect the Windows 8 slate to give the iPad a serious run for its money, at least this year. At Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference yesterday, company CEO Steve Ballmer said that rather than shooting for the moon and crashing and burning, Microsoft only expects to sell "a few million" Surface tablets in 2012.
