The next time someone has the gall to tell you the desktop is dead or starts talking about the so-called
It's supposed to be common knowledge that all-in-one (AIO) desktop systems are ill equipped for heavy duty gaming, but if that's the case, good luck explaining Maingear's new
Regardless of how you feel about Windows 8 and its tile-based user interface, you have to hand it to Microsoft for ensuring its launch partners are on board with the new operating system. Hewlett-Packard certainly is, as it's one of several companies announcing new products ahead of Windows 8's debut in October. HP today unveiled three new Windows 8 devices, including two Ultrabook models (Envy TouchSmart Ultrabook 4 and Spectre XT TouchSmart) and a hybrid PC (Envy x2) that follows a growing trend of combining a tablet PC and Ultrabook into a single device.
There was a time not that long ago when you couldn't touch a high-end laptop without spending a fortune, let alone a gaming grade notebook by a boutique builder. Now you can, as evidenced by Digital Storm's X17E, a 17-inch laptop built for gamers on an artist's budget. Pricing starts at $1,753, though you can go all out and pony up for an Intel Core i7 3920XM processor overclocked to 4.5GHz, among other upgrade options.
For whatever reason, Ultrabook makers have been infatuated with 1,366x768 and 1,600x900 screen resolutions, rarely experimenting with anything higher, regardless of display size. That isn't true of Toshiba, which earlier this month launched its Satellite U845W, purportedly the world's first laptop to play with an ultra-wide 21:9 cinematic aspect ratio (1,792x768). Come October 26, the U845W will get a Windows 8 makeover, Toshiba announced today.
Boutique system builder CyberPower PC is looking to put the pressure on Ultrabook vendors with a sleek and sexy looking model of its own. Unlike many Ultrabooks, however, CyberPower says its new Zeus-M and Zeus-M2 thin and light machines are a little more customizable in that you can configure additional RAM and solid state drive (SSD) storage without selecting a whole new baseline system.
In less than a month, Microsoft will release its next generation operating system, Windows 8, to the general public, and we suspect OEMs will take advantage of the touch-friendly interface by introducing new all-in-one (AIO) desktop models. Getting a head start is boutique system builder Maingear, which today announced a redesigned version of its Solo 21 AIO with a fresh new look and upgraded internals.
MSI describes its flagship G Series GT70 0NE as "the most awesome gaming notebook ever," a description we're sure its competitors would disagree with, though you can't argue with the laundry list of high end parts crammed underneath the hood. The newest piece of hardware to crawl inside MSI's GT70 laptop is Nvidia's GeForce GTX 680M GPU, only the fastest mobile graphics chip currently available.
Samsung has uploaded a video to YouTube showing brief glimpses of a new notebook model the company describes as its "newest Windows-8 ready innovation." The title is "Something Smart is Coming," and other than that, there aren't a whole lot of clues to decipher. Considering that Samsung is hyping this machine as a Windows 8 device, it's probably a safe bet it will ship with a touchscreen to take advantage of Microsoft's next generation operating system.
