After learning about HP's Pavilion Mini and Stream Mini desktop PCs yesterday, we gave Online Managing Editor and Video Guru Jimmy Thang a special mission -- seek out HP's booth at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and film the company's products. It didn't take him long to sniff out HP's whereabouts to give us a closer look at the NUC-like PCs, along with a curvaceous ultrawide display that we're now anxious to try out for ourselves.
Maximum PC's Online Managing Editor and ace reporter Jimmy Thang is currently scurrying around the show floor at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, and one of his stops was to see CyberPower's curious looking Fang Trinity PC. At a glance, it looks like the result of a Tie Fighter having unprotected relations with a desktop PC, though it also reminds us a bit of Razer's Project Christine. Unlike that system, however, this is a real product.
Thin and light workstations for the mobile road warrior
HP is awfully proud of its reputation for delivering thin and light business-class laptops, and to ensure its name keeps coming up when the discussion turns to such systems, HP today introduced what it claims are the industry's thinnest and lightest workstation Ultrabooks to date, the Zbook 14 and Zbook 15u. If these model names look familiar, it's because they're second generation products.
Go back in time a few years ago and we might have scoffed at the idea of palm sized desktops PCs. And if you would have tried telling us they're as powerful as some desktop tower PCs, you would have elicited a hearty chuckle from us. Ah, but times are changing, and these little units are no laughing matter. Following in the footsteps of systems like Intel's NUC, HP today announced the Pavilion Mini Desktop and Stream Mini Desktop, a pair of pint-sized systems with hardly any footprints to speak of.
Lenovo kicks off 2015 by crossing a big time milestone
If you thought Lenovo would slow its roll in 2015, think again. The world's top PC supplier is currently celebrating over 100 million ThinkPad unit sales to date, which is enough to equip every man, woman, and child in Canada almost three times over (in case a bit of perspective is needed). And to keep the good times going, Lenovo is showcasing a number of new products at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, including its third generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon.
The primary appeal of Chromebooks is the price of entry -- without a low price tag, these modern day cloud-based netbooks probably wouldn't find much of an audience. This begs the question, is there a market for slightly more expensive Chromebook models with bigger size displays? Acer intends to find out by launching its Chromebook 15, the industry's first Chromebook device with a 15.6-inch display.
Samsung takes a break from mobile handsets to announce a pair of PC products
Between all the Galaxy smartphone and tablet releases, we're a little surprised Samsung has time to take a breath, let alone announce a pair of sleek looking PC products. Yet that's exactly that the company has done today. Specifically, Samsung today unveiled its ATIV Book 9, an all-aluminum laptop with an Intel Broadwell Core M processor inside, and ATIV One 7 Curved, the company's first curvaceous all-in-one PC.
This holiday shopping season has been highlighted by numerous deals on lots of different items, though the sales didn't end after Black Friday or Cyber Monday. Several retailers continue to pitch discounts, including Microsoft, which is in the home stretch of its 12 Days of Deals promotion. Effective today (and today only), Microsoft is offering the Asus Transformer Book Flip (TP500LA) Signature Edition Laptop for a comparatively low $299.
Boutique system builder Digital Storm today unveiled its new Eclipse small form factor (SFF) gaming PC. It's essentially the poor man's Bolt II. Checking in at about half the price of a Bolt II, the Eclipse is intended to "offer a premium gaming experience at an affordable price," and to accomplish that, Digital Storm took a more value-oriented approach to the system's component selection.
Billed as the world's thinnest and lightest business-class laptop
HP today introduced its Elitebook Folio 1020 family highlighted by the Elitebook 1020 Special Edition (SE), supposedly the world's thinnest and lightest laptop in the business world. Comparisons to Apple's MacBook Air are inevitable, and that's because of the physical design -- HP said it used an exclusive blend of magnesium-lithium alloy and reusable carbon fiber to achieve a weight of just 2.2 pounds.
