By far the most common question we get asked here at Maximum PC is: “should I upgrade”? The answer to this one is never easy, however AMD just dropped word that should make anyone on the hunt for a new GPU sit up and take notice. The price of the 7000 series parts are about to see another price cut, and they are finally starting to make a pretty compelling price vs. performance case for themselves vs. Nvidia.
Maybe the Radeon HD 7970 graphics cards launched earlier this month wasn't quite your cup of tea. At $550, you should make damn sure your proverbial tea meets your tastes before you buy it. But that's the thing about graphics cards; like tea, they come in a variety of flavors. Today, AMD launched its second 28nm next-gen GPU, the Radeon HD 7950, another high-end offering -- but this one costs $100 less than its 7970 sibling.
Picture this: You're driving along in a remote area clear of people, animals, and other cars. There's a posted speed limit with a couple of bullet holes in it. Do you tap the break and adjust your speed accordingly, or take a potshot of your own at the sign and slam the gas pedal in defiance? AMD is expected to launch its Radeon HD 7950 graphics card in a little less than two weeks from now on January 31, 2012, for around $400 to $450, if the Internet rumors prove true. In the meantime, Sapphire apparently has an overclocked version in the works, with several official looking picture having been leaked to the Web.
