AMD's new ATI Graphics Scout is a visual wizard designed to help you find the "perfect" ATI GPU for your needs. Graphics Scout provides feature selections in four categories: video applications, pictures and photos, games, and office applications. Select the most important feature or features in some or all categories, and Graphics Scout (which resembles a Star Wars R2-D2 with a flat-panel upgrade) suggests a suitable match.
Earlier this week, The Inquirercomplained that Graphics Scout was pushing out some questionable suggestions. Thankfully, as an update to the original story indicates, ATI's been making some changes, and in our tests today, it made recommendations that make sense:
When we selected video editing, photo editing, DirectX 10+ gaming, and Microsoft Office applications, it suggested the top-of-the-line HD 4890.
When we changed our mind and selected big-screen TV connections with Blu-Ray support, photo viewing and editing, online gaming, and web browsing, Graphics Scout suggested the mid-line HD 4550.
The ability to move up and down the GPU line to see what upgrading or downgrading the recommended selection is handy, as is the ability to compare any other card with the recommended card. For its intended UK audience, Graphics Scout is great, as it provides links to various UK dealers. For users in other countries, it's still useful, but you'll need to use a site such as Cnet's Shopper.com to find actual products for sale. Try to imagine where 3D gaming would be today if not for the graphics processing unit, or GPU. Without it, you wouldn't be tredging through the jungles of Crysis in all its visual splendor, nor would you be fending off endless hordes of fast-moving zombies at high resolutions. For that to happen, it takes a highly specialized chip designed for parallel processing to pull off the kinds of games you see today, the same ones that wouldn't be possible on a CPU alone. Going forward, GPU makers will try to extend the reliance on videocards to also include physics processing, video encoding/decoding, and other tasks that where once handled by the CPU.

ATI’s latest in their Radeon HD line has finally been confirmed as the HD 4890 X2.
While initially AMD maintained the notion that there wasn’t a market for anything beyond the HD 4870 X2 because of the card being absolutely top of the line, they’ve still gone ahead with the 4890 X2.
Reportedly, the new graphics card will have two GPUs running at least 1GHz per core, and depending on the SKU a customer buys, they can expect 2GB or 4GB of memory. Unfortunately, that’s the most specific information currently available.
No word yet on pricing or availability on the new powerhouse, but it is expected that Nvidia will follow this up with a new ultra high-end offering of their own.
Holy moly, what a day it's been in graphics cards. Nvidia and ATI are set to do battle in the mid-range market, the former with today's announcement of the GeForce GTX 275 videocard, and ATI with the launch of its HD 4890 videocard.
While Nvidia's announcement may have been intended to steal some thunder from ATI's HD 4890 launch, it hasn't seemed to make much of a difference. According to news site DailyTech, 50,000 Radeon HD 4980 videocards have already been shipped to retailers, many of which have been sold to end-users before today's launch. A quick glance at the Egg shows several models selling for $250, with mail-in-rebates bringing the price down another $20, including XFX, who recently defected as an Nvidia-only board partner to sell both ATI and Nvidia brand videocards.
Rumored specs turned out to be largely true for ATI's new part. The RV790-based 4890 comes with a core clockspeed of 850MHz, or 100MHz faster than the HD 4870. Other goodies include 1GB of GDDR5 clocked at 975MHz on a 256-bit bus, 800 stream processors, 40 texture units, 16 ROPs, and a 190W rated maximum TDP (60W idle).
Some leaked reports suggest that AMD has finally hammered out the details of their Radeon HD 4770, one of the new graphics cards to be based off of the 40nm RV740 chip.
The HD 4770 will come with 512MB of 128-bit GDDR5 memory (providing 1960 GFLOPs of processing power), and will pack a core clock of 750MHz, memory clock of 800MHz and a memory bandwidth of 51.2 GB/s. And, thanks to the 40nm manufacturing process, it’ll only draw around 80W of power.
But, while it’s bigger brothers the 4830 and 4850 come with 956 million stream processors, the 4770 will only have 826 million on board (130 million less).
It’s expected that the Radeon HD 4770 will only cost a paltry $99, and will be available to consumers as early as May 4th.
News site DailyTech has gotten its paws on AMD's upcoming ATI Radeon HD 4890 videocard from an undisclosed source based in Taiwan, and has thus been able to confirm rumored details of the new card's spec sheet.
Built around the RV790 core, the Radeon HD 4890, as received by DailyTech, comes with a core clock of 850MHz . The site also reports 1GB of GDDR5 memory running at 3,900MHz resulting in 124.8 GB/s of bandwidth. Final memory specs could change, however, as the card DailyTech received came with Qimonda chips, which declared insolvency (went bankrupt) back in January 2009.
No word yet on a projected price point or release date, but not to be outdone, Nvidia plans to go head-to-head with ATI's 4890 with its GeForce GTX 275. According to reports, the upcoming GTX 275 is being built around the G200b GPU core with 240 shader processors chugging along at 1,404MHz. Other specs include 80 texture units, 30 render back ends, and a 448-bit memory interface. GPU and memory clockspeeds are expected to debut at 633MHz and 2,322MHz, respectively.
Look for the GTX 275 to launch on April 9, 2009 for somewhere between $230 and $280.
As a general rule, our belief is that pairing two slow-performing cards using SLI or CrossFire is a bad idea—you’re usually better off running a single faster card. However, the Radeon 4850 X2 delivers astounding performance compared to the single-GPU boards in its price range, spanking the Radeon 4870 and the GeForce GTX 280, with none of the pitfalls that have plagued dual-GPU boards in the past.
At the heart of the board is a pair of ATI’s RV770 GPUs running at 625MHz, just like the single-GPU in the 4850 boards. Each GPU features a full complement of 800 stream processors, which are connected to identical 1GB GDDR3 frame buffers running at 993MHz on a 256-bit bus. Although X2 boards are labeled as featuring 2GB of memory, because the contents of each GPU’s frame buffer must be mirrored, applications can utilize only 1GB of video memory.
The 4870 X2 outperformed the previous single-card performance champ in most of our benchmarks, delivering playable frame rates at 1920x1200 and 2560x1600 in nearly every game we tested. Naturally, the exception remains Crysis, which, at its highest quality settings, punishes nearly every system we’ve tested. We’re slightly concerned about the accuracy of our Crysis benchmarks; the ATI card seemed to render far-off textures at a higher resolution than the Nvidia card.
As always with high-end cards, if you’re running a low-resolution display—pretty much anything below 1920x1200—you won’t be able to harness the full power of this card. At lower resolutions, the 4870 X2 performs exactly the same as the single-GPU 4870. For anyone running a high-res panel, the X2 truly kicks ass.
AMD, still in heavy competition with Nvidia, has been looking for ways to gain ground on the graphics giant for some time. Now, it looks like they’re taking the fight to the mobile front with the announcement of their Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series.
The Mobility Radeon HD 4000 series is based off of the RV770 architecture. It will feature up to 800 stream processors, support for GDDR5 and GDDR3 memory, a 256-bit memory interface and CrossFire support (with the choice of switching back and forth between discrete and integrated GPUs without restarting).
Notebooks from Asus and MSI will reportedly be offering the chipset as soon as March.
Last month, we spent a ton of time talking about the efficiency and overall pixel-pushing prowess of ATI’s new GPU, so we won’t waste much ink on the subject here. Suffice it to say, the 4850 delivers enough power to drive your sweet, new 22-inch monitor at its native resolution.
The card’s silicon is equivalent to that of previous-gen high-end cards. It’s equipped with 512MB of GDDR3 memory running at 993MHz. Unlike the Radeon HD 4870 boards (which cost $100 more), the 4850 doesn’t sport GDDR5 (GDDR5 transfers twice as much data per clock cycle as GDDR3). The upshot? The HD 4850 has the slowest memory interface of any card in the current generation, and benchmarks show that—especially at high AA/anisotropic filtering levels.
