Back in July, a leaked Powerpoint slide surfaced revealing Dell's plan to release a pocket projector, but it didn't say when or for how much. Those questions are answered today, along with a list of final specs.

For less than what some early adopters paid for a first-gen iPhone, Dell will sell you a pocket projector capable of an 858x600 (SVGA) resolution. The $500 Dell M109S On-the-Go Pocket-Sized projector checks in at 0.80 pounds (down from the Powerpoint slide's target weight of 1.1 pounds) and will fit in the palm of your hand. Dell rates the M109S at 55 ANSI Lumens with a projection distance of 94.5 inches. And to keep the clutter down, the pint-sized projector uses the power adapter from a Latitude or Vostro laptop. True to the slide, the shipping version remains green with a mercury free LED source Dell says will last up to four years.

Look for availability in the US right away, with a global roll out in the coming months.

There seems to be no other device more inane than a pocket-sized projector. But then again, the only thing that could save a swanky cocktail party from total failure is whipping out that compact projector and flaunting last Wednesday’s financial report you so diligently put together. Everyone in attendance will be so impressed by your Powerpoint skills (look at the way that text swivels!). And fortunately for you and the rest of those lackluster cocktail parties you’re sure to attend, Toshiba plans on releasing an ultra compact projector the size of an iPod, so it’ll be easier to take your presentations with you on the go.

The prototype was on display earlier this month at Berlin’s IFA 2008, one of the biggest consumer electronics trade shows. The projector is small enough to fit comfortably inside any pants pocket and runs solely on battery. The device radiates a luminance of about 7lm and can display images as big as 50 inches.

Toshiba hopes that it will be successful at introducing the product in 2009. Afterwards, the company can focus on increasing the specs of the projector, gearing it up with more power and more capabilities. The projector may cost an upwards of $400 USD. Specifications may change before the device’s official release.

While Meridian's 4096x2160 pixel projector will empty your pockets to the tune of $185,000, it appears Dell is coming out with a projector that will fit inside your pocket. And at just over a pound, it won't weigh you down either.

Details regarding Dell's aptly named pocket projector (surely to undergo a name change) became available after a leaked Powerpoint slide appeared on the web. The slide shows the miniature projector next to a coffee mug and looks almost small enough to fit inside.

According to the slide, the pocket projector uses an LED light source instead of a lamp or bulb, supports SVGA (800x600) and XGA (1024x768) resolutions, and earns a green tag by containing no mercury.

Not leaked, however, was any word on a possible release date or pricing information.
