Cyber Monday is the biggest online shopping day of the year, and it follows on the heels of Black Friday, an increasingly busy day for e-commerce. If you're Amazon, trying to keep up with all the orders can be a daunting task, which is why it's getting help from robots. Amazon on Monday unveiled its eight generation fulfillment center, which uses robotics supplied by Kiva Technology to keep everything running smoothly.
Have something handy to wipe up your drool? You'll need it because drooling is an involuntary reaction whenever Girl Scout cookies enter the equation. The only problem is, it can be a bit of hassle tracking down a box of Thin Mints or whichever is your favorite, though that's about to become old news. For the first time ever, Girl Scouts of USA is opening up cookie sales online through its new Digital Cookie program.
We love this time of the year, as it affords us an excuse to stuff mounds of moist turkey and other delicious fixings down our gullets (while only feeling semi-guilty about it), houses and neighborhoods are dressed up with decorative lights and lawn ornaments, kids are suddenly on their best behavior in hopes of earning heaps of toys, and the sales -- oh, the sales!
Note: We focused mostly on PC hardware deals. For more gadget-oriented deals, visit our sister site TechRadar for more Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.
Can you spot a real product from a fake one simply by looking at its picture? In some instances, it's not as easy you think, and according to The Counterfeit Report, a consumer protection website, online auction site Ebay isn't doing enough to protect its buyers from falling victim to fake items being sold as the real deal. And that's not the least of the allegations.
Say goodbye to Google Shopping Express and hello to Google Express, the new (and shorter) name for Google's same-day delivery service. In addition to the slight name change, Google added three more cities to the fold -- Boston, Chicago, and Washington D.C. -- and 16 new merchants, such as Nine West, PetSmart, SportsAuthority, and more. And if you live in Bay Area, you can now order alcohol, provided you're at least 21-years-old.
Use those virtual coins you earned with hardware to, well, buy more hardware
At the rate things are going, even Russian brides and flux capacitors will rank among the things you can buy with Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency that's had its ups and downs in the media. In the meantime, there are plenty of other things you can buy with the popular virtual currency. You could even build your system with parts bought with Bitcoin currency now that Newegg is accepting it.
Retailers slow to adopt online shopping risk becoming obsolete
If you were to gather 10, 20, or even 50 people into a room and ask those who have ever shopped online to raise their hand, it wouldn't be surprising if everyone lifted an arm. Certainly the majority of hands would go up in most cases. Even so, it's still relatively early in the e-commerce game -- according to a new report by a Kantar Worldpanel, online sales of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) will reach $53 billion by 2016.
The cost of an Amazon Prime membership is going up in 7 days
Amazon has been sending out emails to its Prime members to let them know that when it comes time to renew, they'll be charged a higher rate. Specifically, Amazon Prime will soon cost $99 for a year, a $20 jump over the previous price. Students will still receive a discount, though the price of a Prime membership will go up for them as well -- the new price is $49 per year, up $10 over the old price (the first 6 months is still free for new Student members).
Don't take it personal if UPS or FedEx failed to deliver all those PC components and other goodies you intended to shove underneath the Christmas tree this year. It wasn't just you, but thousands of Americans who were affected by delivery delays, as both companies contended with exceptionally bad weather and higher-than-expected demand during the holiday shopping period.
Black Friday is now in the rear view mirror, which means we can look forward to a line up Cyber Monday deals. One word of note before we switch gears -- even though Black Friday is over with, many of the deals listed will last through the weekend. We'll do our best to cross out the ones we know have already expired, but if you see something that catches your eye, it doesn't hurt to click.
