Razer has been having difficulty convincing original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to support its modular PC concept. However, Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan has stated that the company is still working on Project Christine.
It doesn't sound like Microsoft is interested in getting into a low-price slugfest with Amazon and Android for the bottom end of the tablet market. ARM processors are known for delivering solid, energy efficient performance at low cost to OEMs, which would seem to make them a natural fit for decent, cheap Windows tablets when the next generation of Windows launches later this year. However, VR-Zone quizzed OEMs at Computex and found that Microsoft is charging $80 to $95 per device for Windows RT licenses, with $85 being the most common price point. Poof! Goodbye, dreams of low cost Windows tablets.
Do you Ubuntu? If the answer's "Yes," then you probably installed the operating system yourself, using an .iso image and a little keyboard finger-grease. Congratulations! You're the One Percent of the computer world; most users, especially everyday users, would never even attempt to load a Linux variant on a PC. If they want to go truly mainstream, Ubuntu and its Linux brethren need to come preinstalled on OEM-built computers -- and that's why the numbers and news tossed around at yesterday's Ubuntu Developers Summit are so heartening.
Habey USA's new BIS-6630 compact fanless embedded PC isn't quite small enough to inconspicuously jam into your pants pocket, though at just 7.5 inches (W) x 7.5 inches (L) x 2.5 inches (H), it's just the right size for digital signage applications, which is what it's intended for. It's built around Intel's Cedar Trail platform and has a power efficiency rating of just 12W.
Clevo builds the kind of notebooks that, if you were to place one next to a bulk OEM laptop, a yellow puddle would form. AVADirect configures and sells them, and hardcore gamers who care more about framerates than mobility buy them and then proceed to frag their friends, even if it means heading across town to a LAN party to do so. Now gamers with deep wallets can do the same thing in 3D with the new Clevo P170HM-3DE gaming notebook.
Business and institution customers have a line of new small form factor commercial desktop PCs to choose from. The new compact PCs come courtesy of Acer, which just announced its Veriton L4610G ultra small form factor (USFF) and Veriton X2110 SFF desktops packed with up to an Intel Core i5 processor and Nvidia GeForce 6150 graphics.
Maingear claims its new Titan 17 notebook will make "haters cry hax" while "you cry 'Boom, headshot!'" That's a bit of a stretch -- not that haters will hate (don't they always?), but that Maingear calls this 17-inch beast a notebook. Armed with an Intel Core i7 990X Extreme Edition processor and Nvidia GeForce GTX 485M graphics configurable in SLI, the Titan 17 is more of a desktop replacement than a frequent travel companion.
Lenovo today added half a dozen new ThinkPad laptops to its lineup. These include the T420S, T420, T520, L420, L520, and W520, all of which are aimed at business professionals in some specific way. Lenovo says they're all built upon a platform of new Lenovo innovations, such as video and voice calling, smart PC features for power and performance management, all-day battery life, enterprise management, etc.
